I am interested to see what was everyone's first REAL online addiction was. Whether it be one of the first online PC games or a current console game, post it here. You can post your first addiction, and if you want, games you currently play online.
First online game ever played:
Diablo (PC)
First online game I got severly addicted to:
Tie between
Diablo (PC)
and
Phantasy Star Online (Dreamcast)
Games I currently play online:
Warhammer 40,000:Dawn of War (PC)
Splinter Cell:Chaos Theory (Xbox)
Resident Evil Outbreak File 1 and 2 (Playstation 2)
I really can't get into the online RPG's that much. I play maybe for about a week or two, then I just can't get into it. After Phantasy Star Online, Online RPG's just became tedious for me and asks too much of my time.

My first was a text game called Fate and Destiny. As far as I know, it's been shut down for over a year, but it was a MORPG with PvP.
You had so many action points to use per hour and you could work for money, go questing, battle players, worship gods and a bunch of other things.
I guess it is simplistic, but even at work I would find time to go there, often just dump my hour's worth of points into training and get back to work... got pretty powerful that way!

My first online addiction was SiN. Other than that the only other online games I played were Quake II and Unreal Tournament for the PC and Phantasy Star Online for the Dreamcast.

My first (and only) online addiction was Warcraft II starting in January of 1997. Some nights, the Sun would come up in the morning without it even occuring to me that I had stayed up all night glued to the computer screen. I found it very difficult to ween myself from that game, but once I did I decided:
"NEVER AGAIN!!!"
I guess now that I'm no longer an unemployed teenager, I'd never have the time for regular online gaming anyway. But I will still make sure that it will never happen again.

Mine would probably be Unreal Tournament. I remember when it came out, I would play with my friend at his house all day. He'd have 2 computers in his house, so we'd both play online together in the same match. That was when the game first came out, but I got out of it after about 8 months or so. However, my best friend, currently still plays it 8 hours a day (honestly). He's just as obssessed with that game as I am with collecting (actually, he's probably more obssessed).
He figures that he's probably played the game for 10,000 hours by now.
If anybody else plays it, his username is "pigmalion"... and, from what I hear, he's very well known.

pretty much the only online game I got into has been Runescape (MMORPG). I had to quit playing, it was consuming my life.
Went through a small stint of online Starcraft and Red Alert back in college, but it never really grew into an addiction.
Got into some heated games of HalfLife on our college network, but never got into actual online play. Our games ususally had around 12-15 peeps tho, so it was hella fun

Starcraft. My wife would probably divorce me if she once again had to hear months of the squishy zerg noises again.

Definately Star Wars Galaxies, that game was THE best until the developers started ruining things by making the classes totally unbalanced and the P2P fighting impossible.

I started with Phantasy Star Online on Dreamcast and moved from that to Starcraft on PC. After Starcraft was Warcraft 3, Day of Defeat, Counterstrike, Diablo2, and last was World of Warcraft. I only still play Warcraft 3 occasionally and Day of Defeat. Also Phantasy Star Online is something I work on offline when I get in the mood.

I think my first was Phantasy Star Online for the Dreamcast.

my first online game was something I got free from gamerankings.com when I was an admin there. Shattered galaxy, a cheap rip off of star craft. It was pay to play so I quit before the end of the month. I was probably only addicted because it was my first online game ever.
My REAL addiction was from Diablo2, I had an 87 necromancer on the server without hacks. I played for atleast 8 hours a day....good times.

1. LORD (Legend of the Red Dragon).
BBS door game.
2. Tradewars [some future year I cant remember]
Ditto.
3. PSO
DC -> GC ->? PC
My REAL addiction was from Diablo2
A friend of mine is real heavy into that one at the moment, for the longest time he didn't have much time to play it, and now....

There was a RISK game on a BBS way back when where you tool one turn each day, it used ASCII graphics. Couldn't wait to take my turn each day. WOuld stay up late to get a second turn.
After that there was a UNIX based mecha game, also in ASCII, that we played during breaks between classes in college.
After that was a game called Dark Sun online. If you played any of the Dark Sun games you just need to imagine them with a couple hundred players.
After that, Quake, Diablo (perhaps the greatest, until the hacks and PVP got crazy).
Awesome times...

My one and only online addiction was "Red Baron" found on what IIRC was called the Sierra Imagination Network. This was around 1994 and the advent of the Web. You had to have the client software and you dialed up a local access number at a whopping 14.4 baud, the next thing you know you were flying alongside the RAF against the Flying Circus for a mere $3 per hour.
Great stuff, of course. I was already a big fan of Red Baron standalone and the chance to get to play it online against other humans was just too good to pass up. I was heavily into it for about two weeks when I started to realize that that $3 an hour was starting to add up. Being the sensible and poor undergrad that I was I pulled the plug on the Imagination Network once I got my fill. When the $80 or so charge showed up on my credit card I can't say I was surprised but it told me I'd better stay away from that stuff in the future. Haven't played a game of anything online since.

Well, I guess it depends on what you mean by "online". If its just connecting to another computer via a modem, mine would be Marathon 2, a little known game by Bungie whose series was very popular on the MAC (Marathon, Marathon 2 and Marathon Infinity). My friend had a MAC and was always bragging about it. Marathon 2 came out for the PC, but was a commercial flop. I picked it up in the bargain bin for like $10, and I loved it. It is a FPS very similar to HALO. Muliplayer consisted of dialing up and logging into another computer to play a little one on one. It was great, and the graphics were better than Doom at the time.
If "online" is connecting to a server, such as Battle.Net or Bungie.Net (Myth anyone?), I think it was for me Half-Life. I pretty much stayed away from the online communities until that game came around. After that it was Unreal Tournament. I didn't really care for Quake III. IMO, it was a little too boring.
Now I am addicted to Call of Duty. For the longest time I was addicted to Medal of Honor. I don't think I ever played through the single player version of that game.

Very first online gaming experience was the games on ImagiNation.
My first real love online though was Unreal Tournament. I started playing it when I worked at CompUSA. We hacked the passwords on the NT box we were given in the techshop, so we could add as many PCs as we wanted. We ended up with one each on the network. A couple of the other techs convinced me to play one day. I was of the mind that Doom was the last good FPS and everything since was more of the same. Man was I wrong.
Even on our crappy shop machines the game blew me away. After that day I played all I could get. I played during lunch. I stayed after work and played. I finally built a PC capable of playing and played it at home. Every waking hour was spent playing that game when possible. The game is truly awesome. Played the game for years. Really only stopped playing when 2k4 came out. Lately oher games and interests have come first, but Unreal will always hold a special place with me.

Definetly Phantasy Star Online for gamecube. Whoooo man was I got by it. Imported the japanese ascii keyboard and all. Now all it does is sit there crying for play. More than 100 hours in a couple of months, and loved it! Since the GC version didn't have a mic feature ( a la xbox one) Me and some friends used to call each others cell phones hehehe. Great times.........
Then came SOCOM for PS2....more of a playing with friends, than wanting to play it on my own type of addiction.
Now both games do nothing and sit looking pretty lol

PSO, the first game Iplayed online and the only one I played a lot. I stopped with it after a few months because of the high telephonebills I got from it.
For the rest I'm not such an online fan. It's not my kind of thing.

Final Fantasy XI on my PS2 was the first true MMO I've ever played and I really loved it for about 2 months. My wife played it more than I did. I really can't complain at all, the game was very well done, I had a blast and the constant gaming actually helped me lose about 20 pounds. Sad huh?

The first online game I ever played was Burning MUD, and I'm probably the only one here who's ever played it. :P
The first one I was addicted to, though, was Diablo II. Last summer pretty much consisted of that and little else. When the season ended and the latter started over, though, I lost interest. WoW had me for a while as well, but it too lost its appeal. Right now, I play a lot of UT2004 Invasion and CounterStrike: Source.

PSO(Dreamcast), my first taste of online gaming. What an awesome game!
The first one I really got addicted to was of course, PSO on the DC and around the same time... Unreal Tournament(DC)
Everyday in the afternoons I used to play these games(during the summer and fall of 2002). Man I miss those days, and wish UT was still up and running online. :(
Poofta!

first online game played: Doom (not really online, but hey deathmatch was fun as hell)
First online game addicted to: Ultima Online (i quite shortly before Age of Shadows came out, i believe it ruined the game completely, i played since before Trammel, on Chesapeake.)
btw, UT is still up and running, only much better, on the PC!
i play it every week.

My first was Unreal Tournament.
I played Zark Rifle and Binslayers mostly, couple hours a day for like 2 years (sometimes like 5-6 hrs/sitting though).
I went by {NYA}Bearmaster when I was still in the clan, and since i've gone by both "Bearmaster" and "Eru" in UT2K4.

I'm going to have to go with Neopets, I can't even count the hours I was on that thing, getting like, half a million NP. Then comes RoseOnline, which I spent about 20 hours on. Then World of Warcraft, which I don't even want to count the hours to. I remember last time I checked (which was a REALLY long time ago), it was like, 6 cumulative days or something. Now I;m playing a lot of Halo 2, and I play it A LOT.

I'm really getting into World of Warcraft, too. I always thought I hated MMORPGs. I didn't know that they could be this good. PM me your name and server if you can.
Also, this is probably my example. I also got pretty addicted to Maple Story (bad) and Runescape for a bit. My very first one would have to be a game called LorD for a local BBS I was on. It meant Legend of the Red Dragon, and everyone could do a certain amount of thing each day, including attack other characters. It was a ton of fun.
There was a RISK game on a BBS way back when where you tool one turn each day, it used ASCII graphics. Couldn't wait to take my turn each day. WOuld stay up late to get a second turn.

Ha! I used to LOVE playing RISK on the old BBS's. So that would be my first pick. When I got back into gaming I would say Duke Nukem online. It was pretty choppy with a modem, but I would play the custom map Ass10 (Assualt10) for hours! So, yeah, I was totally addicted. It just went from there.

My online experience doesnt go back that far. The first game online I played was Diablo. After it came out, Ultima Online quickly became my game of choice for the next 6 months. Eventualy I gave it up and moved to Nexus. I tried playing other online games like M:TG, and some text based muds, but after PSO on the DC, I just dont have the time, the desire, or even the conection to play online games anymore.

Quake II, then after joining a clan for Q2 I didn't do anything except online PC gaming for a couple of years. Sin, Unreal Tourney, Soldier of Fortune, Quake III, and probably a dozen others. I finally weened myself around 2000 and developed the retrogaming bug and rarely play online anymore.
The only two games that have caught my eye in the last 5 years have been Unreal T2K4 and Jedi Knight 2:Outcast/Jedi Academy (can't beat running around with only a lightsaber :))
