I'm really digging emulation on the PSP right now, but I'm a bit overwhelmed at the amount of emulators out for the system. Right now, I have 2 Genesis, 3 TG-16/PCE, and 3 Genesis emulators on my PSP. I'd like to save some space on my memory card and only keep the best ones on it. Can anyone tell me the best emulators for each of these systems? Here are the ones that I have now:

SNES/FAMICOM
Snes9X
uo Snes 9X

TG-16/PCE
PCE4PSP
PCEP
HUE

GEN/MD
DGEN
MDP
PSPGenesis

SNES: Some folks say that the UO emu is "faster," but I haven't found that to be the case. The latest versions are SNES9x v0.02y23 and UO SNES9xy11J3a5; I'm using and very happy with the former.

TG-16: HUE has been been updated more recently, but I'm quite pleased with PCE for PSP v0.70.

Genesis: PSPGenesis by a mile. It runs damn near everything at full speed, and now has battery-backup emulation as of v0.13. (No save-states yet, but they're in the works.)

Thanks for the reply, ZM. Do you know if PSPGenesis plays both Mega Drive and Genesis games? The reason I ask is because I tried loading a NHL '98 rom on it and got ths message saying something like "this game is intended for play only on PAL systems."

I thought it didn't matter what region a game was when using any of these emulators but after seeing this message, I'm not sure anymore. Maybe it was a bad rom?

I suspect that you need to tell the emulator to load a PAL BIOS file. At least PC emulators have different BIOS files for each region.

Kind of off topic here, but im guessing you used KXPloit to do the whole emulator thing. Once it creates the two folders, which folder do you dump the ROMS in?

The one without the %

Is a full screen mode for Hue or PSPGenesis? If not, is there plans for it?

@nork, in PSPGenesis, next to the rom you have selected, it'll say AUTO, USA, EUR, or JPN, or something along those lines. You use L or R to change it. Just leave it on auto and it'll use the appropriate bios for the rom.

I need to get Dracula X working.

Actually, most PSP emus let you put your ROMs into any directory on the Memory Stick. I have a global ROMs folder on my 1GB Stick with a bunch of system subfolders in it (NES, PCE/TG-16, SNES, Genesis, GB).

To completely digress, the new Neo-Geo CD emu is very hit-and-miss with compatibility, but when it hits (Metal Slug!), it's pretty great.

The problem with declaring that "XXX is the best NES emu" is that since the PSP scene is so young, it's changing constantly. The uo SNES port actually gets updated daily. The guy that ported PSPGenesis is taking forever for his next update because people were bitching that they wanted source, and he doesn't want to release sloppy source code, so it could be a while before we see a new version there. I know a full screen mode is on his to-do list though.

I wish I knew a little more about doing dev for PSP so I could attemot a Stella port. It's been so long since did any non web/VB apps that I'm pretty sure it'd be an exercise in futility though.

Well I checked out PCEP so I could get Dracula X running, and that has a full screen mode. woot!

Too bad I can't get the Blazing Lazers or Air Zonk romz to work.

Did you decrypt those ROMs with PCEToy? I had do that to lots o' files before they'd run.

I have been looking for a NGPC emu too, but I can only find a v1.0 NGPSP. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Go to the PSP Updates site. Seriously. It's got all the emus and several FAQs and a big ol' forum where any question you want to ask has probably already been answered.

The latest version of the NGP emu is ngPSP v1.2.1, but it still has a long way to go; framerate is weak, sound support is spotty, etc. Like the Amiga and GBA emus, it's more of a curiosity at this point than a usable program.

No I found a site to dl the mp3's and isos, I just threw them in a folder, made a toc file for it, then ran it using the super cd 3.0 card or whatever it's called.

Works great, but the sound is a little chunky.

PSPGenesis v0.16 is out, with the major additions of unpolished but functional save-state support (one per game), souped-up speed, and a very decent-looking screen-stretch. A damn fine emu.
