Anyone have any idea if / how this can be done?

You mean the search bar in the upper right hand corner for directly querying Google, Yahoo, etc. (as well as my favorites, Wikipedia and IMDB)? I don't think it's too hard to write a plug-in for something like that. There's a page with info here:

Yeah I dont think it can be done ,not very easily anyway *shrug* I dunno I just wanted a faster way to retreive info from the database instead of having to go to the search page every time. It'd be awesome to be able to highlight the title of a game right click and see a search DP rarity guide. Would be useful when browsing ebay.
No, it can't be done. The search engine feature in Firefox can only utilize search engines that employ the GET form function to do searches. The DP Rarity Guide uses the POST method instead.
This is the same reason why you cannot bookmark the search results from the DP Online Rarity Guide, just the main page and the games' pages.

I thought about trying to get a search in Opera, but my experience in trying to capture POST messages ended up mostly in frustration with only a few viable results.
It would be nice to be able to do such, but I'm sure Joe et al have good reasons for the way it's set up.
My brother made a few Firefox search plugins before, so I asked him to whip up a Digital Press one.
It looks like he got it to work, even though he used the GET function to do it.
You can grab the files here…

Unfortunately, my brother is a younger brother, and the fact that did this… and I didn’t… bruises my fragile psyche. LOL
Wow it works great, thanks!

I am the creator of the plug-in and just wanted to say thanks for using it, I had fun making it.
BTW: I would have posted the URL my self but....I just registered.

Thanks again it works great so far. DP should have this availble somewhere permanent on the site.
Now can you make a Digital Press widget for us Mac users. :)

I agree, Joe should make this available as an official DP download. This thing is great.
Nice work, man!

Is there a way to make this show up as a googletoolbar-style box in mozilla?
It works in mozilla, but to use it I have to make the DP guide my default search engine. Maybe I'm missing a setting somewhere.

There is no setting that I know of that would do that.

First chance I get, it will be linked somewhere on the search page for download.
Thanks, Neb!

Ah, damn. What about making it show up as another option when you hit down or up or whatever in the address bar? Something where I can access it quickly but still have google there too...
God, this is making me realize how very little i truly know about mozilla despite using it constantly.

Sweet little plugin. I now have a search bar for like 10 of the sites I normally visit. :D
No, it can't be done.
Well, now I feel like an idiot. LOL
Seriously, though, I was surprised that the engine can use both POST and GET calls. Usually when someone makes something like this, it is one or the other. But that just shows that Joe has some skilled guys working for him.
And of course, mad props out to Pick for whipping it together. Did you do it by hand, Pick, or did you use the mozdev generator?

Much thanks to you. I've got it installed, and it works great.
If you see "Processing Error: String index out of range: -2" when searching, do not delete your plug-in, it seems that the Online Rarity Guide has a few bugs in it :/ .
And if any one wants me to make a plug-in that searches the forum, just PM me or post on this topic.

I'd love a search tool for the forums. And why restrict it to a private message. Post it in this thread so everyone can enjoy it.
The Retrogaming Roundtable search plug-in is finished!!
The download URL is http://eepromeagle.dyndns.org/Pick/blog/downloads/dp2.zip.
EDIT: URL change.
Funny, the first time I ran it without the DP search page in my browser's cache, the search plugin gave me an error when I tried to use it. However, after the page was in the cache, the plugin worked fine. :hmm:
By the way, what's new in the newer version of the DP plugin?
I did it by hand.
BTW: What is Mozdev?
The Mycroft Mozdev site is a resource for people to develop search plugins quickly and easily. It even has a generator script where you just plug in the values for a search engine and then it will generate the correct corresponding code. Pretty slick, really.
http://mycroft.mozdev.org/
Oh yeah, they also have hundreds of search plugins for search engines around the world.

The new plug-in searches the forum as if you used the search button on the forum. But I am still hosting the other plug-in.
And did you see this post?:

Okay, that will probably prove useful for many members here. However, there is a typo in it: you left in a "DP/" making the plugin look to the wrong URL. After removing that string, the plugin works fine. Is that text a leftover from the rarity plugin? ;)

Yes, I already saw that. I was merely trying to provide diagnostic information for you in the hopes that it could be used to improve your code. Sorry if it was a bother.

I just fixed the bug, the zip is still at the same URL.
I uploaded the wrong version of the plug-in at first but now it's fixed.

Hey nz17, thanks for finding and reporting the bug. I donated 12 Meseta to you because I wanted to thank you.

I do plan on publicizing both of these on the main site somewhere: the database search on the main search page, the forum search somewhere easy to access from the forums.
Thanks again, Pick! Great work.

When you post them, you can link to my site instead of copying them to the server. That way, it helps me see how many
people download my plug-ins (currently, 67 people downloaded my plug-ins) and helps you save 79 KB of bandwidth :).
