i'm not sure if my prayers have been answered, or if someone is trying to get my hopes up only to crush them back onto the ground. here are some of the upcoming titles that may or may not tie-in with the beat 'em ups of the past.

the warriors

final fight: streetwise

urban reign

kenka banchou (import, ps2)
-i recomend looking this one up, it might be the closest interpretation of a modern river city ransom.

beatdown: fists of vengeance

i might be missing a title -flipping through various magazines- tell me if that turns out to be true.

also: the gba version of dynasty warriors might fit the genre moreso than the polygon kin.

Never forget Gauntlet the 7 sorrows supposedly this will be in the dynasty warriors vein.....

looking to the retro scene:
Age of the beast (the new DEV Beats of Rage game)
JAXE Fluid games (if it ever gets released)

And the consoley hybrid types:
True Crime 2 (combat has to be better this time around)
dead to rights 2
that fiddy cent game (longshot?)

...the recent Xbox release of Spikeout: BattleStreet.

Unless I've missed recent news on the title, isn't Guilty Gear for PSP going to be somewhat of a Beat 'em Up?

I still uphold that there never really was a shortage of beat-em-ups, because I consider a beat-em-up and a hack-n-slash to be the same thing, so I count like Dynasty Warriors, etc...

I agree with WaganRunner. There are some hack-n-slash games for PS2 like Deadly Strike and Dynasty Warriors as mentioned.
I wish they made it more sidescrolling like double dragon and final fight instead of adding all the 3d stuff.
But thanks for the titles, I will most likely check them out if I remember :)

Are those all PS2 games?

We seem to be going to back to the licensed beat-em-up too. Star Wars III and Fantastic 4 both feature the mechanics. Batman Begins too, but they force stealth. *sigh*

A new Final Fight would be awesome. :) I wonder what system that's going to be on.

The question for me is are any of them *good*? The last couple of beat'em-ups I played involved nothing more than hitting one button repeatedly until I won, which indicated to me that the genre was on its way down, not up.

The new Final Fight is looking good, but the new issue of "PLAY" claims it's only going to be one player. That's just wrong. Give me my two player Final Fight.

I've always had a very narrow view of beat 'em ups. If it didn't involve people cleaning up crime ridden streets I always threw it in a more general Action category.

Star Wars episode 3 for ds/gba is also a beat 'em up and a pretty good one in my opinion. Like Streets of Rage with a lightsaber and mind tricks. Havn't played the console versions, not sure if those are the same type of game.

Also Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks is a co-op 3d beat 'em up like those you mentioned.

Well, more beat-em-ups is always a good thing, but I just hope these turn out well. Beatdown looks pretty good, and so does Final fight (though I'm really hoping Haggar, Cody, and Guy will somehow be playable). Haven't heard of Urban reign before though...what's that one like?

It's made by Namco the Tekken ppl if you go and look it up at gamespot you'll see it is definately going to be a contender for best beat em up ever, well maybe...

As long as it isn't like that nina game or tekken force well'll be in for something special I hope.

I recommend Eve Of Destruction for PS2, it's a REALLY fun Beat Em Up style game with cool weapons.

Some series should stay 2d. Still, if the gameplay's done right I will get it.

I really want The Warriors to not suck, but all signs are pointing towards another State of Emergency. Rockstar Toronto hasn't done any original games in the past, they've only handled the PS2 ports of Max Payne (awesome game, horrible port) and Oni (bad game, ok port). The screenshots and videos look...inconclusive.

Hopefully it comes together, but man... I don't think it's going to happen :(

Also, it's too bad Sega dropped the ball on Spikeout. The load times are terrible, especially when the save system is so merciless (not Steel Batallion evil, but still pretty bad). I love the game (and series) to pieces, but I'm still disappointed knowing that it could have / should have been so much more polished. :(

On a tangent, have any of ya'll played Minority Report? It gets a little weapon-heavy at points, but the core beat-em-up engine is fun as all hell. Throwing bodies through multiple panes of glass and off buildings is absolute gold.

Crap, where did that come from all of a sudden? I appreciate the fact that they're trying to keep RCR's SD style in the transition to 3D, but it looks...odd. Oh well, like Zeed said, if the gameplay's good then I'll buy it.

new info on the warriors http://www.gamespot.com/ps2/action/warriors/index.html?q=warriors

it sounds manhuntish but better improved gameplay, I really liked the brawl aspect of manhunt, very versitile and exciting.....

all we need is a new golden axe and I'll be really stoked here hoping that Gauntlet the 7 sorrows fills that hole.

King Kong and That new Hulk game also look pretty damn awesome not sure if they count? :D

Big update on gamespot for KK as well as Urban reign and Beatdown....
This Bad Day L.A. also looks very promising :) American McGee is involved....
:D
There is also 25 to life and true crime 2 but they might be stinkers? Such a big year for the beat em up, one of these games has to brilliant something that can match up to Double Dragon, Golden Axe etc etc
