View Full Version : GameTZ to go subscriber-only
You've got 2 weeks left to complete your trades! They aren't charging much, but I can't see a lot of people wanting to pay for it. Their user base will drop way down making people less like to sign up, and eventually they'll disappear. Or maybe I'm just a pessimist!
The following is direct from them:
Special Announcement for all Game Trading Zone Users
================================================== ==
Thank you for using GameTZ for the past few years.
Game Trading Zone is on the verge of making a major change to a Subscriber-Only format. On February 1st, 2003 GameTZ will require that all users of the site subscribe before they can take advantage of the services the site provides.
For the past few years, GameTZ has been a free service. Transitioning to subscriber-only will allow GameTZ to offer additional value to its users. In the short term, we are working on providing special discounts for GameTZ users through a leading on-line game store.
We know you have questions about this transition, so a Frequently Asked Questions page has been created to respond to some of them:
http://gametz.com/SubFAQ.html
To subscribe to GameTZ or add time to your existing subscription, please use the Subscribe page:
http://gametz.com/Subscribe.html
Subscriptions cost $5 for 2 months, $12 for 6 months, or $20 for 1 year.

Well, I know they will lose me. And I'm not at all sad about it. I'll have less, "children" IM'ng me about shoddy trades.
And I'm sure all of those "children" will go too, since I assume they don't have a C.C. and mom and dad won't pay for it.

Well, I know they will lose me.
Same here. It's no big deal thou, I've done far more trades just through message boards and newsgroups than I had over there. But it is a shame I just got my gold star and was closing in on a golden globe, and now it's switching to subscriber only. :/
Oh and I don't think they'll last to very long as a subscriber only service. There just aren't enough people there willing to pay for it. It doesn't take much to run, and there are enough members there now, who will pay to cover the costs, but in the end, it will be very dull, not alot of people, and eventually it will be no more. The people sticking it out right now, will become jadded, and decide it's time to move on, and another trading site will close shop.

I for one will not be paying for gametz. I never got anything but hassles there and I won't miss it. There is no point in paying the kind of $ they're asking for a service I barely use at all.

funny. i deleted that email this morning without even looking at it. i gotta join the chorus and say they've lost me...although i would reccomend it to the Young game collector.
still a good idea though, i sure wish there was a members only site like that for trading classic games. imagine a site with all of our trade lists linked up like that for easy matches. perhaps it would be an invite only service, like you had to have a member vouch for you as a good trader before you could use the service.
theres nothing wrong with the trades we work out here but a system that had everyone's list and a real feedback system would be worth having.

The only reason I signed up was because someone had a Sony Funbit and they were accepting cash as a payment option. Which was perfect for me, since I didn't have anything on their trade list anyhow. T'was the only Funbit I've ever seen. I just signed in every month for whatever reason I still haven't come to terms with.

Losing me as well..
too much pain in the ass to keep your collection up to date there..
Also sick and tired of people posting lists of what they have rather than what they can give up.. SHEESH.. if you aren't planning on selling / trading it, don't post it!

I'll be gone too...I mostly used it as a place to link to to show people what I had to trade, I too won't miss the billion junk emails I got.

I've been there since 1999 and had some great trades with some great people. Once it's member only though, I'll be gone...

in a way, you guys are missing a key point (which, given the gripes we all have with gametz, it's an easy one to overlook):
they're going sub only mainly to GET RID of all the losers, kids, scammers, and other jerks clogging up their message boards and trade pages. if enough people who are good traders with quality games hold out until the purge ends, then the site WILL be a good place to trade (of course, they'll all go to gamefaqs, and then THEY'LL start charging, lol!)
i probably hate gametz more than anyone here, given that some clown wanted to get about $350 worth of stuff from me and backed out the day i had stuff packed up and waiting for a paypal payment to arrive...BUT, given the amount of people i've met on the positive tip there, i see the site becoming a bit easier to tolerate...
(although, i only signed up for 2 months, lol- i'll see if i can make that five bucks back in a trade or something)

I probably won't sign up. Either I didn't have what the people were looking for, the money value equaled what I could get off of EBay, or if I DID have items they wanted the person wanted more than what I offered for games that were more common. I was on there for some time and only had one trade that worked. Not worth my time.

I won't sign up. I've only done 4 deals there in more than a year. Most of the time I either get totally retarded offers for my stuff, or people are just wanting way too much for their stuff. The only real reason I go there once in a while is to try and trade for Radiant Silvergun. Looks like i'll just have to buy it on ebay now.
I'll be the first to say that I actually had good experiences there. I've made 9 trades that all went perfectly. I've had a few attempts at trades that never went anywhere, but at worst it meant that I wasted a few minutes of my time and I do that a lot here! LOL
Anyway, I will definitely not be paying either, but I thought they had a good thing while it was free.
geelw made a good point too.
