Wow, very cool item. Does anyone know anything about this? Was it part of a huge Nintendo display? Was it sold in stores, or was it a Promo item?

I believe that it was part of a large display made for a game rental store where you could try out the hot new games in a nintendo that was next to it

I own two of them, but I don't think they were for rental outlets. Mine came in an auction with about 30 games and none of the games were ex-rentals.

Are yours the exact same as this? The reason I ask is because it appears as though this is only a piece to a larger Game Rack. The reason I think this is because Mario is cut in half on the far right side of the rack.
I have no idea if this is correct or not, so maybe you could varify either way.

What you are seeing is a cardboard slip cover that wraps around to the backside and likely has a UPC code back there. Definitely not a part of something larger.

Ok... so this is the entire thing? I thought for some reason it was part of a really large display, or maybe was 1/2 or 1/4 or a game rack at some game store. I am very happy to find out that this is the whole thing in itself!
Thanks :)

Yep, I'm certain it's a single piece and based on your thread, it looks like the thing that's right up your alley. Congrats!

I see. The reason I thought it might be a Promotional thing is because I have never seen one before, and because there is literally no mention of it anywhere on any of the NES websites. It has to be a pretty rare item, since you see those Nintendo game cases all the damn time, and these things never come up.
Even if it's not rare, I got it for a pretty good price, so I think it is worth that much on cool points alone! :)
Thanks for all the replies.

AND it comes with the original packaging too. Double cool points for you!

Good job on the win! I've never seen one of those game racks either.
I would never assume something like this to be a promotional item, though, since many cases/racks for the NES tend to be rare and have yet to be documented on the web. In a matter of fact, this counts for most NES-related items with the exception of the games/systems. I'm surprised that no NES site has actively tried to compile lists for such items, though. I've made lists & small databases for myself that will most likely be available on rfgeneration.com sooner or later, but can't believe that nobody else has tried to make somewhat complete lists available to the public.

What kind of items are you talking about? Signs,Merchandise,??? I called Nintendo and asked them if they had any information about signs/displays from the NES era, and they told me that they didn't. They said that they never had information on those items, and that the companies who made them originally are the ones who have the info, so I was kinda stuck on a dead end there.
I was actually thinking about making a website and trying to document all merchandise from the NES era. I have a good deal myself, and I have seen quite alot more on sites like NESplayer.

Yep, I'm talking about databases for signs, merchandise, accessories (joysticks and other accessories), VHS tapes, all NES-related books, etc. I've spent about 3 months now researching some of these (and really haven't spent all that much time doing this either), and managed to get some pretty good lists going (I did have a lot of archived info & pics from a long time ago, but not much that I haven't come across again recently). I have nearly complete lists of VHS tapes and books/guides posted on the forum @ rfgeneration.com. I also made a database of NES accessories...an early version of this was added to the DP guide a month or two ago.
It would be cool if you would make a website of NES merchandise. I submitted a whole bunch of pics for merchandise that I own to NESPlayer that will be added in their next update. I have no problem sending them to you as well if you want to start up a database of them. I've got pics for a lot of other NES-related merchandise from other sources such as eBay that I can share in order to document as much as possible. NESPlayer has a good deal of merchandise listed, but it's more of a picture gallery than a database. It would be nice to have a database with release dates/etc for all the NES merchandise.

Awesome. I have no freaking clue about how to make a website though. Does it cost alot of money? I was thinking about names for it, and I came up with stuff like "NES4life.com" and other nerdy names like that. LOL
I too have kind of been archiving Nintendo/Mario items myself, except I honestly think there is almost an endless supply of stuff. Because for the most part the same items show up all the damn time, but every once in a while something comes up that isn't documented anywhere online or even mentioned anywhere online (my Nintendo 48" intertube from 1990).
Feel free to PM me if you have any info or anything about how we should do this.
