I found a loose copy of Earthbound at a local swapmeet a couple of months ago and I've just gotten around to finishing it. Anyway, around the part where you talk to the Apple and Orange Kids the game started making this horrible noise, something like a two tone beep, occasionally. It doesn't seem to matter what background music was playing at the time, although I don't remember hearing it during special music sequences like the Runaway 5 numbers. It went away the first time when I handed my inventory over to Ness' sister and then took it back again. It started up again when I got into Monotoli's area and it just seemed to stop on its own. I've done a search for this but I can't find anything about it (it could be because I don't know the right keywords to search under), but I was wondering if anyone knows what's going on. Is it a status effect, an Earthbound quirk, or something funky with my game? The game plays just fine, other than the noise I haven't had a problem with it. Thanks in advance.

I've played through this game many times, and I always hear that beep every once in awhile. It never really bothered me, and I always just wrote it off as one of the game's little quirks. Good to see that it wasn't just me hearing it though!

My favorite RPG. Yes, Earthbound is full of these noises. It's what makes the game different from the others.

The other... RPG's? I'd say Earthbound has a bit more going for it than random noises. LOL

Thanks for the responses. I know its not the telephone ringing, that one's an identifiable noise. Its definately not just part of the background music, because I've heard those particular songs with and without the sound. Its the fact that the noise isn't always there that's confusing me. Normally sound FX indicate something's going on. Its a very loud (that is louder than the background music) "Bee-Beep" where the first part is slightly higher pitched and louder than the second. I'm willing to chalk it up to Earthbound silliness since the game plays fine in every other respect.

its a sure sign that your character is growing a brain tumor. actually, i think it does have some purpose, but i don't recall if its some kind of item changing (like, the eggs > chicks > chickens) or someone contacting you (besides apple kid).

You probably have a chicken in your inventory. Did you buy a fresh egg and forget about it?

You probably have a chicken in your inventory.

That's the best out-of-context quotation I've heard in a long time.

Man, I love Earthbound.
