I am repairing my friend's controller s and have determined that there is a short in the cord. The short is between the controller and the nearest black cylindrical thing. I am wondering what that thing is and if I can just cut it off.

are you talking about the 'break point' near the cable plug?

No, its close to the controller.

Th stress relief is just practice, and doesn't really do it's job anyway. :)

This is what Im talking about. If it is not a required piece I will cut the cord on the far side of it and connect the cut part to the controller.
