The ROM of the week is: Mad Planets (available HERE (http://www.robohara.com/mameclub/mplanets.zip)!)

Every Monday, a member of the MAME club will pick a new game for you to play in MAME! All you have to do to participate is install MAME, download the ROM of the week from this message, and then post your thoughts about the game! You can post a full review of the game or simply tell us what you liked/didn't like about the game. Have you played this game before? Have you played it in an actual arcade? Do you like the genre? How did it run on your computer? Did you beat it? If so, how long did it take? What was your high score? How far can you get? Did you have any problems emulating the game? When writing your review, post it right here in the sticky topic and include any thoughts you have about the game. Remember, YOU are the reviewer. Let us know anything and everything you think about the game! Just remember, if you want people to respond during YOUR week, you should play along on OTHER weeks!

Never heard of it, so I gave it a try.

It's like Galaga but way more hectic. Plus planets get pissed off and chase you around. LOL

It's a pretty fun game, I'll probably play some more.

Edit: Forgot to mention that the top score is obviously a play on the word Khan from Star Trek.

High score of 38244 :D

The first time I tried this, I was unaware that the original machine had a spinner and hated it. Then at CGE I saw the real thing, and I've been hooked ever since.

I was lucky enough to have this game at a local arcade when I was growing up. It is a really unique game with a cool control scheme that adds to the gameplay. They don't make games like this anymore.

Unfortunately, I don't have the control set up to really play this game. Just another reason I want to get a Slikstik.

I used to love this game back as a kid. Mad Planets is another game that lived in our local bowling alley, in fact I can clearly remember it sat in between Gyruss and Time Pilot.

Like many other games though, without the original controls it's simply not the same. You need a spinner/joystick combo similar to TRON's to really play this game correctly. You can play for a while without rotating, but when planets stay near the bottom of the screen, there's no way to reduce them to rubble without going on a suicide mission.

Games like Mad Planets, Gyruss and the like were a natural progression after Galaga/Galaxian/Space Invaders, giving the player the ability to at least move in two dimensions versus only one.

Thanks for adding a spinner to my already lengthy list of PC accessories I need to get.

A pretty fun game, I honestly had never heard of this one before. Sadly I could only make it to level 2, so I don't think I really saw all this game had to offer.

Mind if I join in the fun?

This was my first time playing it, got to level 6, and I must admit I thought it was going to be a Space Invaders rip-off or something. But in actuality, it's pretty good. It's fast-paced at times, it's a good level of difficulty, and it's fun. :)

Odd, it won't work for me. My laptop is ancient, but I have the latest MAME. It just sits there.
