Time for me to get nerdy on this.

First off, you are missing Sonic Underground, but that show is massively shitty and thus barely counts anyway.

Secondly, the "dark" one is SaTaM / Saturday morning Sonic, it was on saturday mornings on..abc I think. Adventures of Sonic the hedgehog is the slapstick/chili dog one.

Sonic X was ok in Japanese but I didn't see much of it..the human characters were pretty damn pointless, excet maybe some of the "unfriendly" ones. Chris is annoying as hell.

The slapstick one was the only one I ever really cared about. I liked the SatAM one as a kid but now it's ruined by the abundance of furrydom surrounding the show. :(

I saw sonic underground once. Part of my soul died that day.

Anyways, I vote for SatAM Sonic. I have the most fond memories of that one, and the more serious tone fit the series better, IMO. If only it wasn't cancelled so fast.

The ABC version of the show is my favorite.

The slapstick Sonic doesn't get enough recognition and holds up better than the SatAM series. I've watched both a year ago, the entire SatAM run and about twenty or thirty episodes of the goofy syndicated show, and the attempt at being 'serious' hasn't aged well at all. You can at least revel in the overall badness of the goofy toon and be amused.

Didn't Urkle do the voice of Sonic in the goofy one?

The old Sonic was 1 of my fav shows when I was young.

Anyone seen the Sonic movie? Keep in mind it's not a real movie, but actually 2-3 TV epis stuck together, in Japan anyway. It gets called a movie just for show.

He did it for both shows, and even Sonic Underground

Yeah, it's an OAV. Pretty decent, although it still boggles my mind why Knuckles got the hat in that...the only other place i've seen him with that hat is in the archie comics...I still don't know it's origins...

The hat is a throwback to the Crocodile Dundee character, Knuckles is an echidna and echidnas come from Australia.

ABC's "dark" Sonic, hands down. Awsome theme song too!

I know that the goofier show had its characters featured in Mean Bean Machine, and a few from the Saturday morning one had cameos in Sonic Spinball, but both were spin-offs from the main series. Why weren't the shows intergrated into the main games? Did Sonic Team hate both American cartoons? Was Sega only minimally involved with the shows? I always wondered that as a kid. I would have loved running around the forest with my furry revolutionaries backing me.

SatAM. Saturday Morning Sonic.

I've said this, and explained this about ninty-billion times.

It's the best show ever.

SatAM. Easily. The only serious animated series that compared favorably to it was Batman TAS.

I'm also curious what Sonic Team thought of them and the Archie comics. Particularly if Oshima and Naka were polarized on the issue... ;)

I'd like to see SonicX if they show it here in NZ.

The chances look reasonable, the Kirby show got shown last year [or was it last last year?] here.

I remember enjoying the SatAM edition immensely more than the slapstick version, though that one did have it's charms (the two stupid robots gave me some chuckles). The Sonic OAV was decent, though horribly, horribly dubbed. I've only seen a handful of Sonic X eps (I moved from Virginia to Georgia last year, and the Fox affiliate here airs stupid educational shit instead of the Fox Box) both dubbed and subbed (downloaded off the net). Sonic X is the best animated out of the bunch, but I don't like the fact that Sonic is A) in the "human" world and B) he rarely gets any screentime, and when he does, that stupid kid is always hanging around.

If they just did the SatAM toon with Sonic X quality animation, we'd have one hell of a cartoon! LOL But for now I'm voting Sonic SatAM.

I brought this back from the dead for this announcement. If you're a fan of the SatAM "serious" Sonic the Hedgehog series, well then:

The DVD set was just released yesterday. Sonic, Tails, Princess Sally, Antoine, Bunny, Rotor, Snively, and of course Dr. Ro-Butt-Nik (as Sonic is fond of calling him) are all here. Big fan I am. Just grabbed mine from Best Buy for $25.99. Worth every penny for those who enjoy the Freedom Fighters' quest to retake Moebus!

Nineties-era cartoon fans may remember that at one time, two animated series based on the ultra-popular Sega game character Sonic the Hedgehog sped across TV sets in 1993. This Sonic aired on Saturday mornings between '93-'95 and offered a slightly darker tone and more elaborate stories than its syndicated counterpart, The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog (1993 to present). Jaleel White (Urkel from Family Matters) provided the voice of Sonic for both series, but the similarities between the two shows essentially ended there; SatAM (as it was known to its small but loyal fanbase) followed the futuristic adventures of young Sonic and his band of Freedom Fighters (which included Bunnie Rabbot, Antoine, and other characters from the original games) as they attempted to foil the evil plans of mad scientist Dr. Robotnik, who had enslaved the city of Mobotropolis and turned its citizens into robots. Where The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog focused on the comic elements of the games, SatAM played more like a serial, with each week presenting a new dilemma for Sonic and his pals to overcome. Sadly, the Freedom Fighters' struggles only lasted for two seasons (though a third was reportedly plotted out), but fans can enjoy the entire 26-episode network run with this four-disc set, which includes a respectable amount of supplemental features. Chief among these are short interviews with White and series head writer Ben Hurst; a smattering of deleted and extended scenes are also included, as is a storyboard-to-screen comparison, a gallery of concept art, and a printable script for the series' pilot, "Heads or Tails." Devoted fans may also glimpse a reproduction of their own Sonic fan art on the set's case.

The very first SATAM show, I remember the song even today, even though it's been probably 12-13 years since I've seen the show.

I miss being a kid.

Yeah, I never understood...wasn't the Sonic the the Fox Kids lineup obsessed with Chili Dogs? And wasn't Tails a real pansy (mor ethan usual?)? Did they have alot of creative freedom with that license and ABC had more input from Sega bigwigs or something?

Nice revival! I picked up the DVD set yesterday, and have already watched through the whole first season again.

This show really is great. I mean, now that I'm older I find myself picking out continuity mishaps and laughing at some of the awkward dialogue, but...it's still great fun. I'm actually surprised how little chili-dogging there is -- I think maybe four episodes out of the first 13 even mention it?

Totally worth the ~$30 it'll cost you. Supposedly if this one does well, Shout Factory will also bring us AoStH on DVD. A little less loved, but...I want that as well.

Interesting note: All the illustrations on the packaging (bar the cover, which is by Archie alumni Ken Penders -- lol green knuckles) are by Sonic fans. Makes you realize how bad most furry art really is. ;) Though I think I see a Jon Gray piece in there...
