View Full Version : The Donkey Kong conundrum

I have always been led to believe that the character that we have today, and love so much, is actually NOT Donkey Kong.
Donkey Kong, as far as I know, is the character that was in the very first game titled "Donkey Kong" where a nameless character (Who we all assume to be Mario) tried to rescue a girl (Who we assume to be Peach) from a barrel-rolling simian at the top of a few platforms...
The character we all know and love which appears in today's games is in fact DK (Or rather, Donkey Kong Junior)
As I understand it, Donkey Kong Junior (Or DK) is the son of Donkey Kong. Then you have the rest of the Kong family.
Notice that in many party games featuring DK, he is not called Donkey Kong, but actually DK...
Am I right, or have I lost the plot somewhere? Is the modern day DK the same character as in the oringinal Donkey Kong game, or is my theory sound?

And in the original DK game, Mario was known as Jumpman and he was a carpenter. His girlfriend (who is NOT Peach/Toadstool) is called Pauline.

I believe I made this theory up a while ago whilst playing Mario Kart or Diddy Kong Racing or Mario Tennis or Mario Party or something like that. I'll have to break out a few games to refresh my memory.
I believe it was in one of the N64 multiplayer games where I came to this conclusion though... :/

Well, because until you see a big Donkey Kong and a smaller Donkey Kong (called "DK") I don't see any sense whatsoever in this theory. Think about it, why should I? LOL

going by the continuty pointed out in dk country.
Cranky kong is the original donkey kong from the first game.
donkey kong from dk country is in fact dk jr.
diddy, dixie and um the fat retard monkey are all new charecters.

I tend to just ignore all continutity issues when it comes to Nintendo characters... Donkey Kong is Donkey Kong!

I'll agree, the DK in DK Country is Jr. If not, then what hell happened to Jr. anyway?

Well, you could say that Diddy is DK Jr. However, I go by Blitzwing256's theory.
Oh yeah, it's "Kiddie Kong," not "fat retard monkey."

but yeah the first game tells you who is who, and I believe the manual explains it as well (i'd have to dig it out again and look)

I'm curious to what happend to Stanley from Donkey Kong 3? The mysterious bug killer. I don't think he has made an appearance since that game.

I think it's something down to the fact that DK wears a red tie... I think? I can't remember my mental notes I made a while ago when I came up with this theory.
All I know is, I managed to explore all avenues, and examine all evidence to come up with a plausable theory - Except all I can seem to remember now is the out come - That being "DK is Donkey Kong Jr" but can't remember how I arrived at this theorem...
I shall be playing a few of the N64 titles later on to see if that refreshes my memory... I'm certain it's all down to one of those... :roll:
