You know, the old head boss of Sega USA.
Tom Kalinske.
I would love to strap the guy down to a chair and force him to answer some damn questions. Questions like......
1. What the hell were you thinking, when you decided to bring out that piece of crap known as the 32X?
2. How could you possibly not have a real Sonic game on Saturn?
3. Why did you give up on the Sega CD so early?
Actually, I guess Tom Kalinske isn't really the problem, he was just the boss of Sega USA, and Sega Japan was the one calling all the shots.

Well, saturn was a sega of japan thing. And thats because cut off his proverbial balls. If he would have had his way, the 32x would have been as good as the saturn.
Tom Kalinski deserves a medal, for what he did at Sega in spite of SOJ's contant meddling and undermining of his authority. I wrote a piece (http://www.sega-16.com/Feature-%20American%20Samurai.htm) about the whole thing on my site.
This is the man who deserved to have his testicles kicked in: Hayao Nakayama- the man who almost single-handedly killed Sega.

I generally don't condone violence but hmm....
that picture of that D***h*** makes me changing my ways an oh so tempting proposition.
That guys's probablly the reason the saturn went caput.

I just wanna know why so many shitty FMV games were put out on the Sega CD. I don't think FMV shows off the great potential of CD.
But i will commend Tom & the SEGA ad campaign he helped create.
Great, memorable commercials that are still funny and memorable to this day.

Indeed, the 32x was Sega of Japan's idea... it was forced on the US because of the high number of Genesis owners in the States.

I think everybody is to blame in the Sega thing. SOJ for the constant meddling, SOA for not bringing over the really good Saturn games from Japan (OR is that SOJ's fault?) Who ever decided 2 add ons was a good idea (especially since the 32X was so close to the saturn release date) Whoever for killed off the sega scream in the Saturn days should be out of work. Bernie Stolar was kind of a tool, perhaps a good business man, but a tool none the less.

ha ha, I bet you would
Look, I have a 32X system, and I enjoy messing around with it every once in awhile, but let's be honest. The 32X was/is a piece of crap.
That doesn't mean that we can't enjoy that piece of crap, but it still doesn't change the fact that at the end of the day the 32X is a piece of crap.
Why is it a piece of crap?
Let me count the ways.......
1. It cost too damn much. I think it was like $189.99 or something like that. Maybe $169.99 or something. But still way too expensive for an add on device. I know, because I bought mine the day it came out.
2. It was extremely underpowered. I have no idea why Sega even brought this thing out. It really couldn't do much. Supposedly it has 32,000 colors. Oh really? I would like to see some of those colors, because to me, it looks basically the same as the Genesis in terms of color. What about the sound? The sound chip was crappy as hell too. Or did it even have a special sound chip in it? It sounded just like the scratchy sound of a regular Genesis. There really wasn't anything on this system that was screaming, "I'm 32-bit, here me ROAR". Virtua Fighter was kinda impressive, but not impressive enough for a $189 add on device.
3. The library of games sucked. Let's face it, most of the games on it are pretty damn crappy. There are a number of Genesis ports with slightly enhanced graphics, and some crappy sports games. I mean, it really doesn't have one killer app. Doom is played in a little window, so you can't consider that a killer app. Knuckles Chaotix was thought to be it's killer app, but as much of a Sonic fan as I am, Knuckles Chaotix is pretty weak. Metal head was kinda cool, when I first played it.
4. It was quickly abandoned. It was shamefull how Sega just totally abandoned the 32X, and left all the 32X early adopters in the dust. Some people paid alot of money for their 32X systems, and they got stuck with a dead system.
5. It requires that little connector cable to work. This makes it hard to get a used 32X and actually use it, because alot of times it doesn't have the connector cable.
Having said all of that, I have a 32X, and a number of games, and I still mess around with it from time to time, and I do enjoy it, but I enjoy it more as an oddity than anything else, and I definitely don't try to convince myself that this system was any good.
In fact, I also think the Atari Jaguar sucked, but I actually like the Jag more.

1. It was 150.
2. It wasn't, it just never made it out of the 1st generation slump. Look at the first 10 game released from any system, and you'll see how little they used the system's resources.
3. Agreed, but only b/c it was euthenized.
4. B/C SJP (which didn't announce the saturn to soA) cut off allt heir resources and prematurely even killed the genesis (which could have made millions more) to push their saturn.
5. Never had a problem finding the cable.
Having said all this, the thing that makes the 32x so collectable, is that it had potential to be the last best cartridge system, and it died just like the saturn died, b/c of poor management.
can't say I want to beat any of the current or ex Sega staff in particular really :P

One again anthony chatting shit.
It was that san dudes fault, tom did alot of good stuff for the company, but the san guy took the megadrive off us and jap marekts, for jap it was the best but USA it was the worst. He also caused the saturn to be a flop

1. already addressed
2. Colors-see Kolibri, Tempo. There are plenty of others that completely outperform the Genesis palette, but those are probably the most vibrant examples.
Sound-Eh. Star Wars Arcade has nice sounding theme music, and samples are all clear. Most of the music does appear to be running from the Genesis, though.
3. From a quality vs. quantity standpoint, I think the 32X does quite well. It has a small library, but a high ratio of good games. You have the "undeniables", such as Virtua Racing, Shadow Squadron, arcade perfect Space Harrier and Afterburner, Star Wars Arcade, a good version of Doom (yes, it is.), Virtua Fighter, and MKII. You also have games that many love, yet some don't care for, such as Blackthorne, Knuckles Chaotix, Kolibri, T-Mek, Metalhead, Fred Couples golf, and Tempo.
Yes, you have shit such as Zaxxon Motherless Base 2000, Toughman Contest, and Cosmic Carnage. But out of (37?) games, you have at least 15 that are considered to be good games in most circles, if not all. That's approaching 50% good/shit ratio, which is more than you can say for most systems.
