Take a look at this auction (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8204672509&category=62053&ssPageName=WDVW&rd=1) -- since the image only shows Sony and not Midway, I would think it was the European version, but it seems to say "NTSC" in the upper left, but I can't read it for sure. The description could very well be describing the actual cover I guess, but is this a variant? Or pre-release cover art that ended up in eBay's image database?

Stock photos are garbage - there are *tons* of stock photos in the half.com/ebay.com database that aren't accurate. Same goes for Amazon, Target, etc.

Yeah, I know there's a lot of garbage... Saw a Gamecube "Summoner" variant on one auction and it was hard to suppress the BIN reflex! When I asked, I discovered it was in fact the normal one...

Since it has the ESRB logo it would not be European. Here's a picture of the Euro cover from Amazon UK:

I assume it's just a mockup they had before the game was actually released.

As far as I know thats what it is. Just a dummy cover. Occasionally they pan through (Syphon Filter 3 Early cover) and are real, but this one i've never seen.

Just about all European PSX games also have the Playstation logo written along the bottom, and not the side.

1995 and most of the 1996 releases don't have the logo along the bottom. it mainly started with 1997 releases.

Yea, i know for a fact my parodius doesnt, i think most in the first 500 didnt have that little banner?

yes, Enigma, as I said 1995 and 1996 mainly don't have the logo but also a few 1997 releases are "naked" ;)
I think (without checking) that all 1998 and upward releases carry this nasty bottom logo.
