might be a stupid question, but what was the xband used for, could it be used with alot of titles, and would it still work?

The XBand was a modem subscription service which allowed you to play against people via a telephone line. Netplay for console users, so to speak.
I've heard good things about the system (when it was running) but it never took off. :(
