Hey folks. I have a question about the FF Legend and Adventure games for the old Game Boy.
I know that after Nintendo and Square "broke up" the games were rereleased. They were published by Sunsoft when that happened. My question is, is there any significant difference to the box art or the game label or anything like that on the Sunsoft releases? I mean, other than Sunsoft's logo. Thanks.

Lots of looks, but no help?
I'm asking because I have an opportunity to buy FFLIII complete, but the version in question is the Sunsoft version. I'm cool with that as long as it's not significantly different from the original Square-published release. Any help would be appreciated.

Well, as far as the box goes, the only differnece is that instead of the Square logo you have the Sunsoft one.
But the re-releases of the four FF GB games from Sunsoft do NOT have the maps/posters that came with the original release! Just the manual and game.

Perhaps this will help:

The left is a Square FFLII and the right is a Sunsoft FFLIII. Not the same game but you get the general idea of how the label art is different between the two. As far as the box is concerned IIRC the Sunsoft version is virtually indistinguishable from the Square. In fact when I bought the FFLIII new (I already owned the other Square-released titles at this point) I remember taking it out of the box and thinking “WTF does the label look like that? Aha, different publisher.” In other words there was nothing on the box that gave me any indication that the game was being made by a different publisher. There was probably a Sunsoft logo there but otherwise it looked the same.
As for the maps, you could order them from Square and I did this as well as replaced the ones that went missing for my copies of FFLI and II. The folks at Sunsoft were really pleasant to talk to. I don't know if you could still get those maps but it's possible if they're still in business.

Maybe I'm misreading your post, but just to clear things up, the Square published version of FFL3 has the white border too. The only difference between my game and your pic is the name of the publisher running vertically on the left. I don't know why they went with that label style for FFL3, but it seems to be the same across both versions.

That FFL3 label sucks. o_O The only FFL I own is a Sunsoft version of the original, and it doesn't have a label like that. Never knew about the map, though; that's pretty lame.

My copy of FF Legend II is made by Sunsoft and looks exactly like the Square version in your pic with the exception of a Sunsoft logo.
And both my Sunsoft copies of FF Legend II & III came with maps too, so I'm not sure if the story about the Sunsoft versions not coming with maps is correct.

It seems that FFL 3 (Sunsoft version) came with the map. Mine has it, so I suppose it's the same with other copies ;)
All the copies I have seen of FFL 1, 2 and FFA (Sunsoft version) were without the map, so I thought it came without it, but it seems it's not the case with FFL 2. I too would be interested to know about it (FFL 1, 2 and FFA).
The game is the same, the only difference is the logo on the box and the manual.
