I never had a Playstation 1 (pretty amazing, for a guy who has 30 different systems, 1,000+ games, 500+ mags, has been in two national video game mags, holds a gaming world record, was on a gaming TV show called TV Pixx! at the age of 7, was the editor of the gaming fanzine Zap! in the early 90's, and has been playing since '79), and I'm looking to pick up a complete one, so can anyone post a pic of the PS1's original box? I saw there were several in box on eBay, but some were different boxes, and I MUST have the original.

Holy shit I was beginning to wonder if there was a question. Haha, nice list of accomplishments you have there. I have an extremely early PlayStation, if it isn't launch, it must have been close (maybe not, I don't really know). I'll go take a picture of it and post it, someone can let you know if it is the one you need.

All of the games on the back are launch games or came soon after launch so it's either a launch box or the one after it. Hopefully someone can clarify.

And an addition after kevincure's response, the pic above is from an SCPH-1001 box.

You'll want SCPH-1001, packaged with, I believe, a Developer's Demo Disc. Note that the lasers on this version are notoriously bad, so you'll also want to check that it works :-).

Thanks for the quick reply, guys! So I guess this isn't it:

PS1 (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8205046958&category=62054&ssPageName=WDVW&rd=1)

The yellow triangle in the lower right is there, but the box appears to be white, while yours is clearly black. Check it out. :)

Well my box says copyright 1995 on it and the PlayStation launched in September 1995 - meaning unless they changed the box in those three months chances are you're looking for a black one identical to the one in the picture (but I hesitate to say that with 100% certainty because I guess they could have altered it). I'm not sure what the one in your picture is, I'd guess maybe a 1996-1997 unit. Double check with the seller if possible, but I don't think there's any point.

The odds are very good that the box looks like the one I posted, unless there was a box modification around October-December and I own the second variation you're looking for the one above.

Sorry i can't be of more help. I usually remember the day, date, time - what I had for breakfast - when it comes to when and where I get my systems, but this was my wife's PlayStation and she's not entirely sure whether she got it in 1995 or 1996. It's possible they kept using that same box into mid-1996 for all I know.

imho the best original PS1 is SCPH-1000 which is the only retail PS1 with S-Video out as standard... O_O

Back in the day I bought an original SCPH-1000 and right out of the box it had problems. Many games would not load and the memory card slots would not work. I returned it and got a second-generation unit SCPH-1001 which comes in the “white” box and have had it ever since, it’s never had a problem. If you want an original to play, I’d say go with the 1001 as the 1000 units are so problem prone, if you want an original for a collection only purpose, get the 1000.

I was going to say that I don’t remember my original 1000 having an S-vid out but I didn’t want to argue if I wasn’t sure.

only Japanese SCPH-1000 has S-Video out socket at the back from factory.
It was subsequently removed in US release and never on any other retail models...

The all black background with a full shot of the system in the original picture is the original model.

However, the second "all white" box is the box variant I need. Thanks, I get to bid now! :D

I'm pretty sure that's the original, because I remember that box when I got my Playstation 1 on launch day. I have since thrown out the box (I was too young to realize it had some kind of value), but I remember that box, and the games on the back of the box.

Yeah, the original US version is the 1001, NOT the 1000. The 1000 is the Jap version.

Hmm, so did the white box come later, or was it released at launch as well?

Well my box says copyright 1995 on it and the PlayStation launched in September 1995

This statement is false, what it means is that the Sony PS1 unit was copyrighted in 1995.

I stand corrected. I would have expected later boxes to say copyright 1995-(whatever year it was when the new boxes were made). I tried to see if my PSOne box said copyright 1995-1998 but it didn't have a copyright at all. Anyway, my reasoning was going off numerous products that update the year to go from the introduction of a product to the actual date.
