I searched and didn't see a thread devoted to this exactly. There are a few excellent shmups for the GBA, but the Classic/Color is a different story.

My vote goes for Sagaia. Shmups are a tough genre for the original GB, with the screen being so blurry and small, but Sagaia hits all the right notes. It is a nice Darius remix of sorts with music from and stages inspired by the first two games. I just recently got it off eBay, and recommend it to anyone who loves shmups. Runner up would be the first Nemesis game.

As for vertical shmups, there aren't too many good ones. Solarstriker is probably the best, despite being so old and simplistic. It is still a blast.

R-Type DX on the GBC is well worth checking out - it includes the GB versions of R-Type and R-Type II in color and interestingly, in the original GB black and white. Quite a blast to play.

I've got a GB import of Parodius.
It plays quite well considering.

I also bought a GBC S-11 (top-scroller) although I havn't opened it yet. Anyone know if it's any good?

I always thought that Solar Striker was pretty good, espically for the fact that it was a first release title.

S-11 would be fine if it weren't for the fact that your ship is affected by inertia. It slides when you release the D-pad - a BIG no-no in a shmup.

I'd have to second R-Type DX. It's pretty fantastic!

I also think my vote goes to Parodius (although I only played the version in the Konami GB Collection). Also I need to say that I don't play much shooters on handhelds as I think the screen is too small for shooters.

Graidus: The Interstellar Assault (Nemesis II) has always been my favorite GB shmup. It had it all. A good mix of atmosphere, good graphics, terrific music (the best I've ever heard on the origional GB IMO), and tight, varying level designs. It is a tad on the short side what with only 5 levels, but it's still quality through and through. I commend Konami for putting this much effort into a GB shmup.

One of my fave Shumps on any console. It's just so easy to pick up and play! I second this!

I'll have to agree R-Type DX is excellent. I also really like the Macross 7 shmup for the GBC...

I'm rather fond of Nemesis myself. It's very similar to Gradius. There are also some Twinbee GB games, though I've never gotten a chance to play them.

Well, there's a fair selection of shooters on the Konami GB Collection carts (from Europe, the ones I can't stop talking about); Gradius, which, since I've actually started playing it, turns out to be a nice port; Parodius, and TwinBee.

All good, though I like Gradius quite a bit. These games all seem to be just like the bigger versions, well, from what I know. Good stuff.

Gradius: The Interstellar Assault is another good Konami GB title, this time with Castlevania 2: Belmont's Revenge-like graphics (you'll know when you see it).

Surprising, but the GB turned out to be a good system for shooters.
