SPOILERS?
Arc the lad - Twilight of the spirits - PS2
OMG. Chrono Trigger probably still gets the record for longest boss battle ever, but this game has one hell of a long last boss battle. From the last save point, until the last hit to the boss took me about 90 minutes. And only about 10 minutes of that was the trip from the save point/equipping to the actuall boss fight.
I started around 10:30pm, went to bed around 12:15am. Was a pretty good battle, although it was the second time I tried (had tried earlier in the day and got WIPED). Anyone else fought this guy? Was I just low on levels? I brought Darc, Kharg, Tatjana, Maru, Paulette, and Delma. Dark, Paulette, and Maru were my damage dealers. Tatjana and delma healed/buffed. Kharg was friggin useless but he could res/heal if he needed to, and I figured he's kinda crucial to the plot so I would feel bad leaving him out lol.
Other than the boss battle, battle system and bi-linear gameplay, this game was pretty damn forgettable though....

The last boss to Chrono Trigger took over 90 minutes? I remember beating Lavos alot quicker. It's news to me that the final boss of Chrono Trigger was considered a lengthy boss. The only boss that remember took a long time was the final boss in Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles. It took me two hours to kill it.

I was mid 20's to lower 30's (Except darc, who was like 36) with my 6 chars, I think they all levelled 4-5 times during battle.
No, I don't think Lavos took 90 minutes. But pretty damn close, haven't beaten it in 10 years or so. I am not teh uber RPG master of level 99 chronokiller chris is apparently. It's usually pretty common knowledge he's a lengthy boss.

maybe he's talking about the entire sequence of bosses tht precede it.

Well if you count all 3 boss battles with sephiroth at the end of FFVII, and this is saying you played the game without hardcore leveling or without and god weapons, that boss battle takes a damn long time.

Smithy took forever in SMRPG.

Thats aint shit. What about Xenogears with all those parts of the final boss that youd have to beat down. That one took more then an hour.
There was that Hydra boss battle in the God of War demo that I thought would completely keep me from playing the full game due to frustration- I couldnt make a dent in that f*cker so I quit, throwing the controller in anger.
A co-worker recently loaned me the full game, & I got past the Hydra, but I'll be damned if there wasnt ANOTHER boss later that I couldnt even scratch- I realized I mustve been doing something wrong & used a new approach.
I HATE boss battles where you need to know/have a SPECIFIC move/item that will only do damage. "OK, we wont tell you this, but you have to do this, aim here, do that, sneeze twice, then run around back & hit him on his tender unprotected spot."
On the other hand- Innoruk, the final boss in Champions of Norrath, was rather the pushover- beat him first time through! The 1st Baldur's Gate final boss is easy too, if you have enough arrows.

LOTR: Third Age had toooooo long of boss battles in the late stages. Maybe not a single 90 minuter, but several 45-60 min in a row. Urgh.

Call me a weenie, but I found the last boss in Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga, to be a fucking pain in the ass.
He wasnt hard per say, but that bastich took me forever to beat. Its felt like it took forever + you had to pay very close attention.... :beaten: I hate bosses that take forever to kill.

I've been rather start and stop with Shadow Hearts (PS2) just because some of the damn boss battles take so long.
Malek at the end of KOTOR was driving me nuts until I just stuck his ass to the floor with a bunch of adhesive grenades and lobbed thermal detonators at him. It seemed a rather un-Jedi-ish thing to do, but it got the job done.

Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne
The one two punch of the final boss, Kagutsuchi and the final final boss, Lucifer took me an hour and a half to beat. Slow as hell.

I was never any good with Vagrant Story, so all their bosses were totally brutal and long. But you'd expect that when you do 1-5 damage each time.
VG isn't for the casual RPG fan, that's for sure.

Obviously you all haven't played Albert Odyssey to completion. Due to the way that WD "beefed" up the game, some of the later boss battles take over TWO HOURS! I fought one of the final four tower bosses for 2.5 hours before I beat him. No stops, no going to get a drink....TWO AND A HALF HOURS. And then my 3rd party Saturn memory card died and I lost my save before beating the game....

The Last battle in Final Fantasy X is pretty long though it's the easiest it's just dreadful to sit through

The last couple of bosses in Tactics Ogre: Knights of Lodis are freakin' brutal. I remember hacking away at one of them till 3 in the morning because you could only damage him for 2 to 5 hit points at a time. Must of atleast takin a solid 2 hours to put him to rest.
EDIT: Lavos takes even longer if you fight him Ocean Palace.

Though certainly not as long as some of the others listed here, the final bosses in Dragon Warrior II and Dragonlord in Dragon Warrior can take forever, especially if said bosses get happy with the HealAll.

Two mentioned before, but...
Shadow Hearts- I didn't find any of the uber harmonizer forms (they're all hidden, sorta) and it showed... I had fine levels, but it took me over and hour to kill each of the last two bosses.
Vagrant Story- I gave up on the first boss. God I hated that game. If you didn't attune your weapons "just right" (how the hell are you supposed to just KNOW what type of creature is going to be the next boss???) you did 1 damage with each swing. I wasn't having a problem staying alive, but when the first boss in a game is still alive and kicking after half an hour, forget it.

Ha. I remember the final boss in Evolution for Dreamcast took me about 50 minutes or so. That wasn't so long, but I remember the battle was so damn boring and it was so damn late that I honestly FELL ASLEEP twice in the middle of the battle.

Well maybe these cannot be considered a "single" boss per se, but in my almost inexistant RPG experience I remember some "clasic" examples.
First of all, the US Shining Force 3 last battle. Took me over 2 hours to defeat Arrawnt mainly because there's nothing between the beginning of the Damp battle and Arrawnt himself, making it really hard star over if something goes wrong. Would need ages to level up all the characters to something usefull and get all of them alive to the final battle with under 30 hours of gameplay is a real achievement... (another though: with nearly 30-40 hours to each Scenario, this makes Shining Force 3 complete (S1,2,3) one hell of long game with nearly 90-120 hours of gameplay. A record for that time ;) )
Another long battle is the last one in Shining Force 2 with characters under LV20 promoted at LV30-40 against Zeon and THEN the final Secret Battle. A Full hour and a little more if my memory doesn't fail. (Another sort of ideas: one hour for a simply "Game Over" ????)
I remember as well, this time from SNES: the hardest and longest Battle in Super Mario RPG is NOT Smithy. Culex takes the honours without a doubt, he has a large HP count, annoying attacks and if that shouldn't be enough, 4 other enemies with even more annoying attacks to stop you. He and his little 4 crystal fellows takes more than an hour to defeat. The only good point is the fact that they don't recover HP each round nor do they have recovery items/abbilities. Long, yes, But it is IMMENSELY funnier to play than Smithy. (As a matter of fact everytime I play from scratch I try to get better and get LV25 so I get the last 5 levels with the final battles... but when that happens guess what: when I am about to finish Culex, I reset the console. As I said, when I remember how boring Smithy can get I preffer to battle Culex again and again instead :D)
I don't want Invincible Final Boses. I don't want one-hit Final boses like SMB1 Bowser either. BUT DAMM more than 1 hour for a final battle after 30-80 leveling up (depending on your tastes) is even more frustrating at that. :(

The entire ending battles + sequence in Skies of Arcadia. After you save your game (at the last save point) you have to:
2 ship battles
1 huge monster ship battle
Defeat one boss
Defeat Ramirez
Fight the huge silver thing
Defeat Ramier yet again
Watch ending sequence
Since you can't save during this entire time, I claim it to be 1 big battle. Total time was over 2 hours.
