I remember the original Master Blaster being one of my favorite NES games ever.

I also enjoyed Festers quest just as much if not more.

What were your favorite sunsoft games?

Any rare Sunsoft developed game suggestions?

Waku Waku 7, one of the best anime style fighters. It is one of my favorite MVS-games anyway.

For the rest I only have a few games from them, and some of them are just games they didn't make themselves (Jewels of the Oracle, Daze Before Christmas). Aero 1 and 2 were fun to play and so was the Zero.

Blaster Master Stands out the most in my mind, but Journey to Silius was a worthy title. It wasnt't ground breaking in any way but I had fun, which is the whole point.

I also liked Batman Return of the Joker but didnt think it should have been a Batman game.

I wish Sunman came out.

Besides the obvious vote for Blaster Master I'd always thought Batman: Return of the Joker was pretty good.

Glad you made this thread, Sun Soft is one of my fav NES developers as well!

Anyway I think Batman is their best game, it had everything, I remember me and my mate spend years playing that game together but still could not beat it.

One thing that pops into my mind is those bloddy jumping Gorilla things ah!!

Batman. Really one of the best platformers of the 8-bit era, and still the best Batman game ever made. For some reason I cannot grasp, there hasn't been a good Batman game since then.

The robot gorillas (or whatever they are) from the third level are a real pain (I've only been able to defeat them with the gun and a few scrolling tricks), but that's the only real flaw.

Journey to Silius was another great NES game, one that was somehow overlooked, but deserves to be played on the next rainy weekend. The music is just terrific.

Of course, Blaster Master, even though the lack of any password or save feature is criminal. What were they thinking on that one?

And now for post number 1000.....

I have to go with Fester's Quest, great music great top down gamplay, I got that game in 5th grade for $10 and loved it since, I just finished it two days ago, got to the last boss forever ago and never finished it. I still remember the thrill of getting to the last boss for the first time and figuring out how to fully understand the mechanics of the game. Great game.

Second would be Journey to Silius for the Awesome soundtrack and smooth gameplay, that was another game that took me a while to finish, that last stage was a pain in the rear.

What was the name of the PSX RPG that they released? I had it a while back but couldn't advance in it because of a damaged disc, I remember liking the game and all, I just can't remember the name. x_x

NES Batman was a great game. I got it for X-Mas one year and never beat it for some reason. I also nominate Fester's Quest and Blaster Master.

On another note, was I the only one that liked PS T.R.A.G.? I never hear it talked about and I loved it.

I second that, loved Batman on the Nes, the graphics the game play, it's still a fav of mine, also on the Batman Front i thought Batman Returns on the Snes wasn't bad, alittle repetative, but still good, the graphics were very good too.

I go with Blaster Master for my favorite Sunsoft game, with Batman and Journey to Silius close behind.

But here's an obscure NES game for you: Freedom Force. It uses the zapper. You play a cop/secret agent type who has to blast the holy living poop out of terrorists who've hijacked an airport. The game is really quite violent for the NES--enemies (and innocents) bleed when shot. I've never beat it, but the opening cinema is BEAUTIFUL. It's done in a really artsy anime syle, and looks really good on the NES. They made the best of the limited color palette. You kind of have to see it to understand, but the game is worth checking out for that intro alone. Oh, and one of songs from Blaster Master (one of the boss themes) is also in Freedom Force during the bonus stage.

On another note, it's interesting (to me, anyway) that Sunsoft was one of the few developers who published some games on Nintendo's Vs. arcade system. I know that both Freedom Force and Skykid (which I think was actually developed by Namco) showed up in the arcades.

I also nominate Batman: Return of the Joker. Great platformer, and one of the better-looking NES games out there.

Sunsoft really had mostly good NES games, though. Freedom Force was a great light gun game...Lemmings was a pretty good port of the game...and the list goes on.

UFOURIA.. one of the best NES games ever made! Made even better by the PAL->NTSC speed-up effect of playing it in a top-loader. I love that game, great music, great graphics, cross Mario 2 with Metroid.. it's great.

That was the game where Max Hedrom and Jesse Jackson teamed up for homeland security. Half the fun was shooting the civilians to see their bloody-yet-cute animations. If I recall, the stewardess looked just like a terrorist and always got me killed.

I know Sunsoft made some games for the PS1, but I don't remember any for the current gen. Anybody know if they are still around?

Xexyz
07-16-2005, 10:57 AM
I do know of one title they made for the PS1, Monkey Magic. It was some horrible anime that I vaguely remember from back in the day. Let me tell you, this isn't a game to remember from the company, it is absolutely dreadful. It's a very generic platformer, with less frames of animation than your standard 8-bit Mario platformer, annoying voice acting, and a terrible combat system. Definately a failure in Sunsoft's portfolio.

-Blaster Master (NES, re-released on GBC) - A save or password feature would have been a big help, though. Has anybody played the GBC re-release? If so, how did it hold up?

-Bugs Bunny's Rabbit Rampage (SNES) - The best of their work with the Looney Tunes license. A platformer that was on the difficult side at times. I think I only passed the bullfight stage two or three times.

Aero The Acro-Bat (SNES, Genesis, re-released on GBA) - One of the better platformer-with-an-animal-mascot games that seemed to be the thing at the time.

Well, I'd consider this to be more of a "Square" game than a "Sunsoft" game... but that's just my opinion.

I'm not a Sunsoft expert, by which I mean I haven't played many of their games, not even a lot of the legendary (common) stuff mentioned in this thread.

But I like Ikki! Especially the coin-op, but the Famicom cartridge isn't terrible...certainly better than Route-16 Turbo! But anyhow, it's a fun game.

Its called Gimmick! for the Famicom, not Mr. Gimmick, just to inform you :)
But I have also been for the lookout for the Famicom version just to play with custom soundchip. Same goes for Castlevania 3 for Famicom. Also uses a custom soundchip. I have been listeing to the soundtracks and it sounds great! ;)

I put a lot of time into Batman on the NES, and still think it holds up as one of the best superhero games. But overall, I think I've got to go with Fester's Quest. I'm not sure exactly what it was that drew me in and kept me there, but I really dug it. :) I think it could be just the idea that Uncle Fester got his own game. By far the most under-appreciated Addams.

I like Platoon, also; I totally forgot about that one. It's a wierd game, though. It seems like something that would have been made for the C64. It's kind of complex for a NES game. Did you know there was an arcade version of that game? Vs Platoon. Wierd.

Without a doubt, Batman (NES) was my favorite Sunsoft game.

Gremlins 2 and Fester's Quest stand out also, if only for their incredible music.

Journey To Sillius is another Sunsoft favorite... a very unknown game at that. I would sugest checking it out. It was originally meant to be a Terminator game, but they lost the rights while in development.

Super Fantasy Zone.

Even though SFZ was not an arcade game (it was a console-only sequel to the arcade original) Sunsoft managed to capture the essence of the arcade very well and did an awesome job with MD/Gen limited color capabilities, making one of the more colorful looking games for the system. I love how they use more layers of parallax scrolling than the original arcade game which ran on the more powerful System 16 board.

Awesome game.

Along with everyone else it seems...

Batman - THE greatest Batman game ever made. One of the greatest NES platformers ever and featured some of the greatest NES tunes ever composed.

Blaster Master - Took the Metroid and Zelda formula and completely redesigned the genere to work as one. They added vehicle and out of vehicle exploration and they had the dungeons that played out in an overhead Zelda view. Simply a classic game.

Albert Odyssey - The ONLY traditional menu based rpg avalible for the Saturn in the US. It was solid for the time it came out but has honestly only gotten better with age. Beautiful sprite work, lots of detail and fun characters.
Featuring, IMO, the best translation Working Designs ever did coupled with the simply jaw dropping music by composer Naoki Kodaka made for one unforgettable RPG.

Blaster Master for me for the Nes, followed by a close Batman Return of the Joker for the Nes...the graphics they pulled off for that system were amazing. On a bizarre side note, I thought Sky Kid was one of the most jacked up cutesy games ever...Take you plane with a bomb to try to blow up an building at the end of a level....with a flag that has an eagle on it. Anyone else think that was messed up?

For nostalgic reasons, I'd say Batman on the NES. It was hard as heck, but it was one of the few NES games I owned back when I was a kid.

If I had to choose a game I actually enjoy playing, I'd choose Poppohito Hebreke for the Japanese Saturn. It's yet another puzzle game.

Strangely, I have had a copy of Sunsoft Memories Vol. 4 (Japanese PS1) sitting in a stack of unplayed games next to me for the last few weeks. Blaster Master is on it, and some other game I don't recognize.

Eternal Eyes on Playstation 1.

It was a pretty simple, far too linear RPG with graphics that were about 16-bit quality. I enjoy it, though.

I always felt Spy Hunter on the NES could have been pretty good with a little more work on it, mostly centered around the difficulty and the speed of the game.

Actually my favorite memory of Sunsoft is when one of their head programmers wrote into EGM's Letters Section a long time ago and defended the SNES version of World Heroes after Ed Semrad and the rest of the review crew at that time ripped it to pieces a month before, while also accusing Sunsoft of "trying to capitalize on the success of Street Fighter 2."
