for a collector of origional nintendo games that is trying to build a complete U.S. NES collection, what are the games that are going to either take forever to find or will cost massive amounts of cash? i am wondering because i figure i will get the hard games done and over with then focus on the rest...

Stadium Events
any of the panesian games (Bubble Bath Babes, Hot Slots, and ESPECIALLY peek a boo poker)
Myriad 6-in-1
Maxi-15
Action-52
Flintstones 2: Surprise at Dinosaur Peak
Cheetahmen II has been kinda easy to find, but it's very expensive.
but if you want to get technical, Nintendo World Championship has a probability of 0 to finding it because i'd say almost every single person who owns it has it locked up in a display case.
for a full list, consult the online rarity guide and just sort by scarcity.

These games will cost you a lot of money (or lots of luck in the wild ;)) to get ahold of:
NWC Gold & Grey carts (some don't consider these part of a 'complete' NES collection because they were never commercially released)
Stadium Events
Myriad 6-in-1
Caltron 6-in-1
Bubble Bath Babes
Hot Slots
Peek-a-boo Poker
Cheetahmen II
There are other fairly rare games such as Action 52, Maxi-15, Flintstones 2, etc, but the ones mentioned above are the real holy grails.
If I were you, I would just take a thorough look at the DP guide for rarity and value to get a good idea of which games are rare and/or costly.
Good luck finding them!

Little Samson and Bubble Bobble 2 are pretty hard to find as well.

I think that Menace Beach, Secret Scout, Power Blade 2, and Ultima: Warriors of Destiny can be a pain to find as well.

This have been discussed before.
Speedy_NES: I wouldnt say that cheetahmen is one of the rarest games altho only around 1000 copies were made :) I pops up on Ebay now and then. Been 2 sealed copies recently. And the NWC cart isnt really a game of its own imo so I wouldnt count that as the rarest game either. But its damn rare ;)
If you count NWC you could also include all the rare prototypes like Earthbound.
