Audio Video mods for the SEGA Master System (my personal favourite console). 8) S-Video to be exact. Available from OSG.

The Jacks:

Here is a video comparison. It's just my digicam, but you can still tell the difference. RF audio is crap too. This has crystal clear 2 channel mono audio through standard RCA jacks.

RF (ugh) why why why?

Composite: meh

S-Video. Sharp and Vivid, on most anymodern TV made in the last 10 years:

Check out the text at the top. It is plainly obvious the signal is so much above composite, they aren't in the same league. Thing is, once you start getting used to his degree of visual quality, you notice it when forced to settle for less, like the NES. Take that, NES!

Coming soon to an Ebay auction near you. Also available from OSG as an existing mod to your system, at a reasonable (non Ebay) price. This mod is based on the Neo Geo AV mod with a how to here: http://www.neogeousa.com/mod-index.html

:) I love SMS.

Apparently I forgot how to read, or RF really destroys that "LOW" text - I first thought it said "UGH" - definitely an improvement there!

Good GAME.

Good GAME.

I noticed that, too!
Anyway, nice job, I see a huge improvement.

Is this on a standard tv or flatscreen?

Also, how much technical know how is needed for this op? I love my master system, and S-Video would be awesome.

For some reason the composite shot looks the best to me.

Look at the color bleed on the biker Sothy. There's none of it on the S-video.

So, you're going to mod mine for how much? :D

Nice! I've been wanting to play around with stuff like this. I've read a couple of things about making your own rapid fire unit. I think I'll give this a shot as well.

It's on a JVC I'Art 27" TV, which is a flat tube.

To my eyes, the most obvious difference is in the text, specifically the gear setting where it says 'TOP' .

What surprises me is how the composite looks nearly as bad as the RF. That RF though is as clean as RF gets, with no switchbox, but with an F-plug and a shielded cable. I suppose I should have grabbed a ratty ass ratshack third party barely functioning RF switch, and used that for the RF pics. LOL

It is essentially the same S-Vid mod as the Neo Geo, and the Genesis 1, which is outlined at the link I gave. people who just want it done for them, can go to my site in my sig, and drop me an e-mail.

I have no clue what this will fetch on Ebay. The Master System fan base is very small, so I can't see it fetching crazy Ebay heights. Regardless, there is no need to pay Ebay premium. There are others on this forum, and of course OSG, that can do it for you, and treat your baby with TLC.

What's weird about this, is that it now looks to me like it did when I first turned it on on Christmas Eve in 1986. That's truly bizarre, as I was using RF in 1986. LOL I guess the common thread, is that I had fresh eyes on the SMS in '86, when it was state of the art. Now this pixel perfect clarity gives me new eyes for my old favourite. :)

Nice job!

Now mod it for that FM sound chip that the Mark III had an option of ;p

Your score is even higher on the s-video pic too! Wait, you're bias! You're trying to cloud our judgment! SHENANNIGANS!

Awesome!!! And i thought modding a SMS for 60hz was good!

Please could you write out a gudie for doing the RCA plugs, it would be greatly appreciated as ive had no luck whatsoever trying it :(

Pretty cool stuff. However, as far as the SMS / SMS2 is concerned, my first priority would be to mod the controllers with a Pause button so as to avoid the hassle of walking up to the console in the middle of gameplay in order to stop the action!

That's part of the SMS's charm, The real risk of tapping RESET when all you want to do is pause.

Any avid SMS'er has done it at least once. AAAAAAAArrrrrrrrggggggggghhhhhh!

I didn't see too much of a difference, at least not enough for me too mod my systems. What can I say, that's what you get when the pics aren't resized for a relatively easier view. ;) :P

If I resize them, the differences become more subtle. If you can't tell the diff between the text 'TOP' and 'LOW' in composite and S-Video, you need glasses. Really. On the plus side, liking fuzzy video is certainly easier and cheaper. :P

Resized, to lessen the dramatic effect:

Composite:

S-Video:

Less obvious. But still visible to those with sight. ;)

*scratches chin*

Chroma seems up a little high on that s-video there, chief. I'd increase the resistance a bit until those vertical lines blend in. Should probably use a 1k or 500 pot.

Thanks for the tip!

Actually the circuit as built has pots on both luma and chroma, thanks to advice you gave me long ago, that I took to heart. :) I build 'em all that way now.

I'll tweak it a bit and see how it goes.
