View Full Version : I guess Sony stopped putting seals atop PS2 games?

Not a big deal, really, but I guess Sony has stopped putting that little white seal on the top of PS2 games. The last 2 games I've bought didn't have the seal and I noticed in Wal-Mart that none of the new releases seem to have it either.

I only bring it up because I liked buying games with that seal on it. I know some stores like to rewrap used games and pawn them off as new, and the seal always told me the game was new.

Has anyone else noticed this?

This might surprise you, but even if the game had the sticker on the top of the case, it could be near new (ie; in EB's situation, where they pull the disc out of the case with the sticker still on). Same thing with PSX games. I've seen it before.

But I haven't seen those in awhile now so maybe they're stopping that idea.

Next time I'm at a store I'll see if those are on there. I wouldn't imagine why they would stop putting them on though...

Yeah I noticed that too, I just bought Metal Slug 4 & 5 for PS2 the other day from Best Buy (so yes, it was new) and it didn't have the seal on it. Then I bought NCAA Football 2006 for PS2 as well and it didn't have the seal either.

Yeah, they've stopped putting the seals. My recent "new" purchases on PS2, Metal Slug 4/5, Stella Deus, Cold Winter, and Romance of the Three Kingdoms X were all factory wrapped and didn't have the sticker. No idea why they stopped doing it though...

So you can't tell when Gamestop and EBWorld are screwing you by selling you an open game at full price.

Personally, I hate those seals. They usually don't come off in one piece or leave a strip of glue behind. If the insert is put in too high, you end up tearing it across the top. European games, CDs, and DVDs aren't sealed that way.

Putting the seal across the top in no way seals the package. All you have to do is pop open the side and bottom and take the disc out. I became an expert from all the years at Blockbuster prepping rentals. Microsoft has the right idea sealing the side of the package. If Sony really wanted to make sure someone knows that the game hasn't been opened, the shrinkwrap or the tearstrip should be printed with their logo (which is done almost everywhere but the US).

I personally hate the way dvds are sealed with the stickers on all three sides. makes me want to take a chainsaw to open the damn thing. seal them like that and make sure that a game case has never been opened before.

Sadly I bet that's true....

I can't imagine why they'd stop putting them on as they are there for a really good reason - They act as a certificate of authentication, the same as the Microsoft ones on Xbox games...

Were these games sealed in cellophane as well? Or maybe shrinkwrap (Reseal)? Or maybe none which would indicate it has been removed by someone at some point.

Yeah the first time I bought a New PSX game and got it home to see finger prints on the cd I went fuckin off on Gamestop.

So take a closer look from now on.

Nope...Stella Deus at least was for sure factory sealed that way.

I liked that seal. It made browsing games at a place like Costco where they're all stacked one in front of the other - possible. Plus I have a ritual where each new game I buy I take that seal and put in on my door frame.

It's like walking through your favorite titles.

Agreed. Also, your post reminded me that I had new PS2 copies of Burnout 3 and Need For Speed Underground 2, and each had an EA logo on the shrinkwrap on the bottom of the PS2 case. That was pretty nice. Anyone know if they've done that with the newer games?

EDIT: Just found a topic Ed Oscuro created about it here (http://www.digitpress.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=66060).

Well I may be wrong, but doesn't EB/GS use the cheaper shrinkwrap that looks heat sealed on the edges? If so, that can show a difference, because these are still factory wrapped with the folded edges, so it does look pretty different.

Alright, because this is a recent change, is there anyone here that can get some kind of info on why sony decided to get rid of the seal? Rather then wait 10 years and have people 'remember this happening' but dont know why. Better to solve it now while its recent rather then 10 years down the line.
