I was looking in a catalog back in the early eighties and I saw a tabletop game system that took cartridges. I'm pretty sure that it had an LED screen and came with a Defender cartridge. I don't remember what the system was called. Does anyone out there know what this system was called?

I believe you are thinking of the AdventureVision.

Wouldn't this be a great system to do a homebrew for?

I've thought that for the past few years... especially after the MESS driver was written. BUT, the driver isn't completely finished so that may be why(no sound... yet ;)).
I started to tinker with Space Force a few years back. I was changing the title screen and then I was going to do something to the ship and asteroids. Not a new game just new graphics.
It'd be great to see a new game(or even the beginings of one).
I've been looking for one on eBay for a while now. How rare is it, and what does a boxed one go for these days?

The only reason these things are so expensive is because they are so rare that no one gets to play one. They look awesome and take so long to find and then finally you get one and you plug it in...It was the biggest videogame letdown I ever had. The other Entex handhelds are great I just don't get it.
This year, I traded mine with 3 games for labor on a rental property.

For what they are, they are pretty darn cool. They are defintely not comparable to the Vectrex or anything but the technology for the time was just awesome(this is coming from someone who has had one from the beginning).
$2500 is crazy. $1250 is crazy. $500 or $600... I think that's more reasonable for just the "rare" factor.

//VERY RARE//. Were talking.... "Easily worth $1,000 dollars and more" Rare. An AdventureVision is the CENTERPIECE of a collection, not just "A Centerpiece" //THE Centerpiece"//... it's one of those "Ultimate Grails", and out of any possible Grail is the one I want the most.
Sadly it may never happen. :-(.

Yeah, it's pretty much a struggle anyways. I've been staring at my Odyssey2 and thinking about learning to write assembly and make a game for it...
The idea would a good separate thread (think I'll post it):
What system would you like to see a homebrew for?
Don't answer here, like I said I'll post it separately.

$2,500 is an awful lot. Is it really worth that much? That greedy bastard could have at least included shipping in there! :)
Speaking of similar systems, is the Microvision worth anything?

$2500 is nothing. I traded my first born for one. It did come with 4 games though.

That would only be worth it if it and the games were boxed and complete.

Anyone?

no the microvision really isnt worth anything, well nothing to get excited about anyways. if you can find a good MV, that is one without "screen rot", a primitive form of dead pixels then you're talking $15, boxed maybe $25. its a fun little system to collect for, completion is fairly easy but its not much fun to play.

Which came with four games? The Adventurevision or your first born?

Yeah, one of my buddies owns one. The bastard. <<<goes back to playing his PDO XBox>>>
I love the old tech game systems like that where they had to use alot of real creativity to overcome the limitations of the silicon of the day. There's something charming about playing football as a little dot on a Mattel head-to-head, or one of the cool tabletop PacMans or Donkey Kongs that were the shit when I was in 5th grade. With modern hardware it's too easy to make a game look nice. :)
