I am thinking about buying a PC Engine Duo from JapanGameStock.com as it is pretty inexpensive compared to Ebaying it. But I wondered if it was true that it is compatible with US CD and SuperCD games? Is this also true for the Hu-cards or is a converter necessary?

A Japanese Duo will play everything except US HuCards and SuperGrafx games.

A PCE Duo will not play US HuCards though a converter without an additional internal mod. Better off getting a US system and a converter.

save some money and get those white PC Engine Duo-R/RX instead... You don't want your Dup suffering/developing the infamous audio issue.. :p

Thanks for the input. So is there a fundamental quality difference between a Duo R and an RX?

Ugh, so expensive to buy online, much cheaper to buy in Japan ;)

I concur with the white duo-R -- SHOULD be able to find one for ~$100 if you're persistent (unboxed, of course.)
