Take your snes console and flip it over, take the plastic cover off and there is a little port there. What is this for? Did Nintendo plan on developing something for this? Are there any third party products out there that make use of this adapter?

I think the exertainment bicycle used it, but that is the only use for it that I am aware of. I would also be interested to hear more about this.

The Bandai Satellaview. It allowed you to download videogames to your SNEs, including BS Zelda (update of Zelda 1) and Mario's Excite Bike (Excitebike with Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad and Wario).

All japanese, never got it anywhere else.

The PlayStation would have used it.

Well, the CD-i would have used it.

Well, sort of. It would have still been called the Play Station (two words). It likely would have been technologically similar to both the CD-i and the Playstation.

Oh, and to answer the thread question, the above examples are correct, but it really was just an expansion port for ANY additional hardware Nintendo or another third party came up with that could take advantage of it.

Bandai had nothing to do with the Satellaview. They had their own add-on called the Sufami Turbo.

If only Nintendo went through with that deal, we wouldn't be in this mess today. <sigh>

With the ridiculous moves Nintendo makes anymore, nothing surprises me. Their E3 debacle was a joke. Two major competitors show their next-gen console while Nintendo shows an empty, nonworking shell full of? (My, guess, pinball parts). They then spend the rest of their time on what? Nintendogs!

AAAAARG!!!!

IDIOTS!!!!!!

They still think that the world is sitting by, waiting for whatever they choose to give us.

Sorry, I’m a little angry about it.

The SNES CD-ROM was the largest piece of vaporware ever, it’s sad, think of what could have been.

Unfortunatally it would have been another Sega CD. A whole boatload of FMV games. In the early 90's this genere was "huge" and the CD medium was the only to pull this off. Just think about it, live, real actors in a video game!

While you're probably right that it would have failed, that's perfectly ok. It would have stopped the PS1 from ever coming out, which is what really matters.

You're mistaken maybe it be that they only aren't as desperate for attention as you think they ought to have been then. Who knows really. Remember Sony and Nintendo are Japan's Yin & Yang, Sony while boastfull and robust becomes more and more of a braggart, while Nintendo with it's modest attitude and forticious outlook will always have one of it's upper hands where you least expect. Exploring avenues yet allowable under mainstream failure of hindsight seems to be a specialty not many grasp.

Wasn't Nintendo going to develop a Sega CD style add on? Presumably that would have attatched to the expansion bay.

I read them, I just misinterpretted them. I didn't realise the CD-i was the same as what I was talking about. Why are people so harsh on this forum? Namely you.

Well actually the CD-I is not the same thing, to the best of my knowledge it predated the whole SNES CD-Rom thing (Nintendo even allowed them to make some crappy Zelda titles for it). You were right for asking your question. Nintendo originally wanted to work with Phillips but that fell through and then they went to Sony. That also fell through (basically it fell apart over a name, Sony insisted on calling the CD attachment the Playstation and Nintendo refused) and thus the stand alone Playstation was born.

Anyone correct me if I’m wrong on this one but I think that’s correct.

Except it was only called the CD-i; and the downhill slide started when Nintendo abandoned Sony. Excellent point though
