Since I began posting here I see post here and there about people playing in the NWC but never any stories about the blockbuster world championship so I figured I'd include mine and see if anyone else has any.

For the first championship they had in 1994, A friend and I decided to try the Genesis division and I ended up winning for the whole state of South Dakota and got a trip to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida for the World Championships. I remember getting 40 something in a half in NBA Jam for the first week, Some insanely high score on Sonic 3 the next (thank god for the bonus stage), and a fair time in Virtua Racing the last week. The only thing that really mattered was getting a high score in Sonic since that made up for any errors on the other games.

In going to Florida for the championship I amassed a small pile of interesting items that I have never seen anyone else have. This includes a duffle bag, t-shirts, and a hat with the world championship logo, many different folders of information that was sent ahead of time to let you know which games would be played and what would be expected, and also promo items for various games (clayfighter tournament edition shirt, boogerman sticky ball, nintendo play it loud hats (one of which ended up being worn by my grandpa for a long time since he found it laying around and started wearing it) and other things like that.

I totally bombed in the championship part in Florida but it was still a great experience since I got to play a bunch of stuff that wasn't released yet and got loads of free stuff.

On a side note, when I started a job two years ago, I found a guy that was in my training class that ended up placing second to me in the state so he didn't get to go to Florida because of me.

Anyone else take part in this and have any stories?

Look at me...I'm bumping my own 3 year old post, but I am adding some pictures. This includes the duffel bag, my player number I had to wear on myself when competing, the schedule I received, the folder stuff came in, and some press info on upcoming games.

I should stumble upon the shirts and hats soon enough and I'll take pictures of them as well.

That's some really cool stuff. I was checking out the itinerary; did they actually put you up at a hotel and all that for you to compete?

Thanks for the story and pics! What do you remember playing at the Florida championship?

I don't remember everything so I'll take a look at some of the other paperwork because I know there are lists on it.

Yep, they flew my mom and I, since I was only 14 at the time, from Aberdeen, SD to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.

I really surprised no other people around here had any experiences with this.

Here's a couple more pictures, first is a boogerman promo sticky ball I got at one of the booths there and second my hats I got there (actually I had another Play it Loud nintendo hat but my grandpa used to wear it...kinda funny seeing a 60 year old man wearing a play it loud hat)

That's pretty rad.

That is a great story. I really wish they would do stuff like this again. Without E3(the real E3), this type of nation-wide competition could be worth it for a company like Blockbuster or Gamestop.

That is pretty cool, I was living in South Florida at the time and remember the commercials for the competition. Thanks for sharing.

I sometimes scratch my head and ask the same questions as well..why does Blockbuster EBgames etc have these types of competitions now a days? I understand back in the day it was not only just competition but a WICKED source of marketing and in this day in age why waste money on advertising when there are cheaper and easier avenues..but with the constant threat and revenue loss from bootlegging a company like Blockbuster could afford to allocate some money towards something like this again.

From my above paragraph one can probably deduce I am from the old school gaming generation...I too have plenty of pics to post for you guys...I have a vast array of swag I collected as well that floods the closets of my house these days..I will try and do my best to get pics up.

Right now my digi cam is dead and I am heading out shortly but I did end up using my PDA to get a few pics for you guys enjoy and I will post more..wow I am suprised nobody else has found it onto these forums from "back in the day" I wonder where the champions are for the SNES and Genesis formats from 94 would be good to see them chime in...

I am going to try and post pics I hope it works..for now just put up with the crapp pics..my scanner is not at my house..and I took out my old pictures (shot with a standard camera back then in the 90's) and took pictures of pictures with my PDA lol...enjoy though it will bring back memories....more pics to come...

I forgot to add some comments

the first pic - that the finals for my country (canada) taking place at the famous Hockey Hall of Fame..I beat the living Sh%t out of over 10 people seems like I had to play like 15 to 20 it was a LONG competition but I came out on top and there were some people who were pissed lol.

The second pic - there were many people hired by different brand names to market their products those two guys represented one fighting game from the 90's I am sure you all can name...

The third pic - this was one of hundreds of shots my family took of the gaming stage on the stage there (hard to make out because i took pictures of pictures with my PDA for now) we have the competition getting read to kick off..

I forgot to add I placed in the top six in Florida..I made the stupid error of changing up my strategy and or game play almost in mid game to compete with the others..had I stuck to my original strategies I practiced for some games a month or so leading up to Florida I might of been playing against the SNES champ.

All in all though it was a fun experience..even though I missed the chance at GamePro's grand prize..visit theier headquarters and get to have your image put in an actual game...I was the talk of my city and almost across my Province (state as you guys in the US would say) I was in the news..paper and local news..fun times..

Wow. I am so glad to find this post and meet another member of the elite 230ish people from around the world (mostly US) who went to the 1994 Blockbuster World Game Championship. I represented RI for Super Nintendo, I'm 25 now so I was 12 or so when I went. Our group was called the "Dream Team 3". I was late getting to the hotel so they ended up just putting me in a group with a bunch of older guys (probably 17years bc the cutoff was 18). I think the group that won the whole thing (group contest, not individual) was called the "Immortal Kombatants"

During the months beforehand, participating at the Blockbuster stores I remember getting 49 points in NBA Jam using the Detroit Pistons, two weeks later was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tournament Fighter, and then Clayfighter.

They sent me to the district finals for NBA Jam which I lost immediately. I didn't think anything of it until weeks later I got the huge packet telling me that I was the RI representative. My parents thought it was a mistake and found out I wasn't even supposed to go to the district event.

Going to Ft. Lauderdale was incredible. They paid for room and board, plus you get that huge dufflebag full of awesome stuff. When you walked around the convention center you got to play all the games that were brand new or hadn't been released yet. They exhibited the XBand for Super Nintendo, Pitfall-The Mayan Adventure and tons of others. There were Mortal Kombat 2 Arcade games all over the place.

Celebrities that were there were Jonathon Taylor Thomas-- talking about the Lion King, and Six from Blossom (she sat behind me). It was awesome.

There were boxes of collectors edition sealed PEZ things that you could continuously grab over and over. They gave everyone free Blockbuster Cards and took us by bus to use at the Blockbuster Golf and Games Arcade and driving range.

I did horrible in the finals (probably got last place), but it was definitely a great memory. No one will probably remember this but there used to be a Nintendo Game show (the person who won got to run through isles of video games and velcro them to their suit then shoot up a ramp and slide down a tube) and I think the guy who hosted that show hosted the main event. I even asked him as I was walking off and he said I was glad I was a fan and that the show was coming back (the show never came back).

If anybody has any questions, feel free to email me. I'm sure my parents still have the pictures somewhere..

Of course someone remembers it. I used to watch Video Power in its competition form all the time when it ran on WGN. My local affiliates never carried the G4-Tech-TV-type shows with reviews, cheats and interviews, so I had to watch those editions at my grandparents' house when we made the travel. The host your thinking of went by the name Johnny Arcade and if you dig around, a lot of '90s Internet archives have a few good things on the show:

Sadly, I also was never able to have an affiliate carry GamePro TV or The Power Team cartoon Acclaim threw together.

VIDEO POWER!!!! That's the name of that show!!! I thought everyone had forgotten about it too -- none of my friends ever even remembered that show. Man I loved that show so much as a kid. I remember being floored at the possiblity of running around grabbing game stuff (final round I believe) and getting all this free videogame/toy merch. Being on TV playing videogames. Wow. Thank you.

Digitalspace no problems I will post more pictures up SOON, I've been busy all summer and completely forgot to vistit the site!

Evilbean do you talk to anyone else whom was at the finals? Have you come across people on the internet from time to time whom were @ Florida? I've tried to track down people just to reminisce..see if "they" are still gaming..competing in today's gaming circuits and what not but it is not easy to do!

I remember (due to the fact everyone built some lasting memories/friendships) they gave out a list of the competitor's names and numbers, other contact information if you wish it's a shame email wasn't big back then because that would have been a lot easier then dialing long distance to some pals you made in Florida. Sadly I lost that sheet and doubt I can ever dig it up again.

Please post PICS EVILBEAN..

I will keep bumping this thread with more pictures and information.

To add to what evilbean wrote...yes there were exclusive games we got to play before the "general public" Mortal Kombat 2 was there..all of the new sports games coming out that year...and you name it..there were many celebs there..I still have many signatures on items I have and thought about selling over the years...many pictures with celebs and of celebs..I tried to stay away from the new games though and the REASON why was I practiced so hard at the games we had to compete in i didn't want to lose focus...forget what to do etc..hey I was young..I was a perfectionist..so I did try the new games just for a few minutes but did not play them longer then 10 mins lol..I was afraid I'd forget what i recited to do in the competition games.

Those were amazing times...getting free dinner...free hotel stays..free swag...free gaming all day long..I remember the hall the booked was so huge they had inflatable Donkey Kong, Sonic, Mario etc floats when you entered the hall...I remember when we all arrived there we entered a big room where we were seated at tables we had been all introduced to the people putting on the event they showed us a video of how gaming evolved and I remember like it was yesterday the video started with pong...my seems like yesterday!! There was free food, finger foods outside in the beautiful weather...seating outside with tables to sit with friends and family and unwind..they don't do gaming competitions now a days like the USED to..I could go on so many memories..I will post pics to reiterate to show you guys what I MEAN! I just have to find time to scan them.

Wow good to see other finalists finding themselves onto this forum though...hard to find the gamers of yester year....

Dude, Video Power was at the Blockbuster Event? Damn. I wonder if it was one of the televised shows. I would pay some big bucks for the complete seasons of that stupid show. They were so fucking terrible, but I religiously watched them.

I remember when I was a little tyke video power was watched each time it was on..the only problem I was really young and that damn show aired around 6am or so in the morning and couldn't always wake up lol.

I think I still have some episdoes on VHS but I'd really have to look long and hard through various VHS tapes I have in boxes.

To answer your question..no video power was not at the competition I was also in..but there was a host from video power there..or the co-host..not the young guy with the funny hair but the slightly older guy whom had curly long hair he was emceeing the event along with Jenna von Oÿ from that show Blossom...

He was a cool kat though dude was talking to all of the gamers whom were doing their thing and moving closer to the finals..he wanted to know how we got so good..where we were from...how long we've been gaming etc..

Evilbean those pictures are AMAZING! And here I thought all these years I would never see anyone else post pictures!!! I have so many more pictures I need to post but first I have to find time and stop being lazy as well lol.

You got some amazing shots man wow!! You know what's funny and I could not believe it when I seen it you have my mom in one of your pictures!!!!!!!! Small world!!!! The picture with Sonic and a bunch of people in the background!!!

I am going to post my pictures hopefully this week. The memories huh? This ISH seems like YESTERDAY..how is it the years go by so fast? I remember this was the second last biggest gaming competition, Blockbuster had one more after this one but there were many cheaters and that one turned out to be second to this one in terms of popularity and I'm sure number of people in the finals.

Did anyone that lurks these forums particpate in the Blockbuster 2 finals? If so give us the pictures! LOL.

But Bean man oh man great pictures I think I need to brush up my gaming skills for the new generation of gaming competitions going on these days the retired gaming competitor in me wants to! It's just these little kids have a head start on me because I'm not a huge fan of first person shooters and the kind of games peoplea are competing in for this decade...

YOU ARE THE MAN!!!!!! Please let me know when you upload that to youtube bro!! You know what's crazy I have a Sony "handycam" I got real cheap (was probably hot lol) some years ago and somehow (cannot remember when I did it) my minitape I used to record the BlockBuster event made it's way into the carrying case we use for that Sony Camera.

I will have to youtube some of what I recorded as well..if not all of it!

This is truely a nice thread, my question to you and everyone else who were at the event...ARE YOU GUYS STILL GAMING? And if so competitively or just for fun?

As for me..well heres my short story..My younger brother and I visited an across the country video game tournament 3.5 weeks ago just for fun (since registration was closed already) but it was just for "halo heads" and they had other playable games there from new MLBPA games to NHL, etc...AND it got my competitive "thoughts" flowing the only problem is these new generation of gamers have a head start so it would be kind of pointless competing again until I get some practice in, in a way it would be good though because one could learn from the competition out there these days.

I plan on competing again and hopefully sooner then later I just need to find time as we get older we don't have time like we did as kids growing up in the early to late 90's!

SO please guys share your stories and or respond to my question(s), talk to you all soon!!

That's the first thing I did when I saw those pictures from Evilbean was looked for myself or my mom in them.

Yeah LOL amazing if others have pictures that you are looking for huh?

Yo how old were you back then? What format did you represent for?

And what was your overall placement for the finals?

I was like third I believe but what I remember fondly about that year was SMOKING everyone in Toronto at this big venue entitled the Hockey Hall of Fame. I was so focused (I even had a routine where I would refuse to pose for pictures, share my tips until I was eiter ontop or out of the tournament) the Blockbuster guys thought I was praying (as one of the guys put it I still remember that to this day and he was in AWWW when he seen me take it all) or just zoned out but it was just my game face and routine.

I remember all of these things even in my 20's I sometimes think how it would be to compete once again..I mean there are still people "our age" competing and even older going for the BIGGER prizes being given out now compared to the 90's.

Sadly after this BlockBuster competition they held only one more the year after entitled part 2 or whatever and after that gaming competitions in Canada (at least) starting to dwindle and I kind of moved on from gaming but entered local moms and pops store tournaments.

I love this thread 4 real though because it really gives people like us a chance to experience nostalgia.

Do any of you guys have gamer tags to share? Like for xbox or ps3? I do play online from time to time.

The last game I played it seems night and day was Socom but Socom 1 and 2 were the only good titles in that series for the last 3.5 years they have ruined that franchise but that's another story..

Anyways to reiterate hope to hear back from you guys..

I'm 25 now, so I guess I was about 11. I represented Super Nintendo. I still play games whenever I can although not as much as I would like or have time to. I just bought Soul Cal 4 for x360.

My all time favorites are Dragon Warrior IV for NES, Chrono Trigger for Super NES and Team Fortress for Quake (the original one for Quake 1)

My Xbox live tag is "awfulsmokey" (I bought it off CL a while ago and never changed the name)

I have many more pictures, I called home and had my mom scan them, she spent a while doing it so thanks to her.

Glad to meet all of you and hopefully will get the rest of the pics uploaded soon.

Well I am a bit busy today, but hope to get around to contributing some more pictures from this event, it sucks this year there is no video game competitions around, last summer I attended one (which was huge) which sparked my interest again..in gaming and possibly competative gaming once again..

I live in Sudbury right now, but I plan on moving west to Calgary next month. When I was growing up, the nearest Blockbuster was an hours drive away, so there was no way I could be a part of the competition. I plan on making an article about the first Blockbuster championship, and I will certainly consult with you when I make it.

And no, the signup card is not mine. I got permission to post it from some ebay seller years ago. The DKC stuff is all mine, though.

I live and still do live in an area where there were many Blockbusters (I would literally go to all of them to perfect my score lol) I sometimes visit the Blockbuster where I attained my high score, still looks the same pretty much. I have pictures from the Hockey Hall of Fame as well..this is where the regional finals took place before a representative from SNES and Sega went to Florida..I took it for the Super Nintendo Side of things and some chinese dude took it for Sega..wow remember that like it was yesterday.

You have a the plaque in your office..haha thats amazing..I should have thought of that man..I will have to find mine I think..

You stated you always wanted to do something in the gaming industry and didnt', which field are you in now?

I am in the same boat as you believe me or not man..I wanted to do something in video games and was told otherwise by teachers, friends etc...

I'm glad you posted in this thread, where are your pictures...I have yet to upload more, but have posted many...

I'm from Canada...and I was in the finals for both the Super Mario Brothers and StarFox tournaments, the trucks would tour all over and we'd be driven by our parents to almost any location just to achieve our goals of attaining the high score..

Around my city I was known as the guy who competed and won at many of the big video game tournaments..it was an awesome time..I have a wind breaker from that Star Fox tournament..someone (employee from the finals) gave it to me to wear because I forgot my shirt and I ended up keeping it..

Good times back then! I wish I got into the field, I actually had an interview at Harmonix (the people who made Guitar Hero 1&2, Rock Band, etc) a year ago, but it didn't go anywhere.

My plaque is hanging up on my wall nice and proud by a signed 8x10 of a beautiful actress. :) Weird, but who cares. :)

I thought I'd bump this thread to keep track of recent pricing, it seems most recently a copy of the Blockbuster World Championships II for the Genesis has sold for $5000.00. That's double what the previous highest selling price was. Might as well make a note of it as it seems the value is going up.

It was a buy-it-now or best offer, it's now listed as sold. I haven't seen any feedback left for it, but it hasn't been relisted so I think it really sold. That copy was constantly listed and relisted for months before this finished listing.

I like the Genesis so I try to keep track of the really rare stuff like this. :)

Okay, it seems the winner didn't bother to pay for the cart so it's been relisted. So much for the increase in value, I guess I posted that too soon. :embarrassed:

I still don't get why the description says that there's less than 5 copies confirmed to exist, there's at least 5 or 6 of these known by now.

The boxed copy on ebay has sold for $3,375.00. Positive feedback has been left so the buyer went through with it.

I wasn't in the first blockbuster championship, but I did play snes in 1995 for the second year. I was the store champion, but didn't hear anything after that. I got a copy of clay fighters for winning the store championship. I don't remember a ton either, but we played clay fighter, tnmt and another game I can't remember. Here is my store champion plaque insert. I will look or more items to take pics of.

Ok, it seems that DreamTR's copy has finally sold and feedback has been left. It sold for $3601.00, I guess it's safe to say that the value of this game has gone up based on the last two copies that sold.

6683Here are a few more pictures..better late than never! lol

This was, by far, one of the most fun competitions to compete in during the early 90's it was so well organized and packed with competitors and audience members alike!66816682

I was looking for video footage on the championships and came up with this thread. Oh how I miss those days. I represented SNES and won out of a store in PA then went to Philly for the tri-state championships and won that. Then went down to FL for the world championships and place in the the low 20's out of everybody. Whole experience was amazing and overwelming in a good way. In Florida I remember the guy that inspired Rudy gave a speech to inspire the gamers for a fierce competition. Then we got to meet celebrities of the time like Six from Blossom, John Taylor Thomas from Home Improvement, Tommy Moe being world class skier for the US Olympic team and even Shaq was suppose to show up but I think he had something going on with the Olympics at the time but made a video for all of us to watch. Even got one of the top graphic artist for Nintendo Power to sketch a photo of Vega from Street Fighter. I remember even having people from Australia on my team and my team captain being this hot blonde. Think my one teammate from Australia was banging her when I think about it. Was pretty much destroyed when I didn't make it into the finals as you had to be in the top 20 but the final game was Madden so I would have probably got my ass kicked anyway lol.

I know it was on a low key the second year because they spent crazy amount of money on it on the first one that they really couldn't even have a tri-state championship. Think they were taking top scorers for DK on the USA and there was a lot of stupid way to get points that didn't recquire any skill this was also a problem with the competition. There was a lot of stupid stuff that accumulated points but didn't recquire skill. I was focusing purely on skill. Keep jumping on the same turtle for the entire time, keep using ducking and just using low kick on the opponent, etc. I have video footage of the competition that I think I am going to try to find on VHS. Don't think I really gamed that much after that experience as I got into computers and learned the ins and the outs and how to make money from them. But that year supply of ice cream to Baskin Robbins that was one of the prizes was so delicious!

I'm not sure how I missed it but another copy turned up for sale at auction and sold a few days ago, it ended at $10,504.00 which is a new record. Okay, there were a couple systems and a few other games too but those really aren't worth much. I guess this confirms another copy to exist as well, since this was from Goodwill and not a collector.

Yeah, that "sale" was complete and utter bullshit. There's been one on eBay forever, in waaaayy better shape for $6,000. There's no way the GW copy would sell for $4,000 more when the other copy is still available.

The game has been relisted by Good Will. Not the least bit surprised given the end price of the original auction.
