Let me know how it is. I've been wondering if it's worth buying. I love that style of game, it reminds me of Raptor: Call of the shadows, but i'm always causious when an old style game is made this day in age.

yea i will be buying this on my lunch break. I have been waiting for this game for a while now. I went to a local EB a few days ago and they said it wasn't in there computer. WTF? Then went across the street and was satisfied with Gamestops answer of the 20th. I just wonder where all the SHMUPS have gone over the years? I am so glad the DS got this!!!

If you find it, pick it up ASAP. I saw this posted in the Gaming-Age Forums:
In an email I received from Majesco it appears that Nanostray is going to be in very short supply. I emailed them about the EB Games rumor not carrying the title, and this is the jist of what I was told:
-EB Games WILL be carrying the game, just in sporadic locations. Also some locations that previously were going to receive the game may not unless they have preorders.
-Gamestop is more widely carrying the game, but still not 100% of the stores
-Quantities will be limited (I think it's due to Majesco's financial pinch)
-Second shipments will be very small in comparison to the initial shipment
-The game may not be re-stocked widely on a long-term basis unless the initial shipment does very well
-Many online retailers will not receive full or any shipments of the game
Basically, if the initial shipment sells well, expect to see a more full-fledged release. For now, it's going to be a pretty soft release of Nanostray.
The thread can be found here:

1 circuit city

I wanted to play this game tonight after work.

15 stores later Nanostray is a no show in my area. I just ordered it online. The people that I talked to at the stores I went to said it was limited to pre-orders and 1-2 copies at their more popular stores. Apparently they only have one popular store since I only found one store that even had one that had been sold.
Man this game is harder to find than new N-Gage games.

The places I called said to try back tomorrow, as if it came out today, it wouldn't be on shelves until tomorrow at around 2.
So I'm gonna call back at that time and see if I can't snag a copy.
I failed today as well. I went to 5 different stores and nothing. Gamecrazy didn't even have it in their system. A guy at gamestop expected it tomorrow. I try to avoid gamestop at all costs, but I need this game.

I ordered this game Friday from Amazon...and the ship date for my order isn't until September 23rd. Somehow I don't think they're getting anymore. I guess I should've pre-ordered.
The status of this title wasn't updated in my GameStop's POS today. It still indicated a shipping date of 07/19, since it had not been changed to active, I don’t think it shipped. Usually when this happens it means the game is delayed, sometimes just for a week.
I've been waiting for this one too!

I talked to a friend at Majesco and according to him Wal Mart will be receiving a large number of copies today or tomorrow. He said that EB and Majesco are on very poor terms, which is why it will be hard to find there. He wasn't sure about Gamestop.

I didn't think Sigma Star was out yet.
$30 is the only price for this game. Also turns out that Gamestop isn't getting any copies but they can order it from Mejesco. So that's why it will take extra long to order from Gamestop. As people have already been mentioning it seems that TRU got the biggest shipment.
Its getting pretty good feedback from the people over at the shmups.com forum.

For some reason I thought it was. No wonder I thought it was hard to find. The idea of combining two different genres of games that are polar opposites is either a really good one or a really bad one. Either way it interests me.
I tried using a Best Buy $5 off coupon (GGC) at Toys R Us, but they wouldn't have it. I am keeping it sealed for now in case I see it at a lower price in the near future.
I'm a good way through the game. I love it but it could have been done on PSP. I wish they used more of the neato DS features

Okay, this could be nothing more than a rumor, but I've heard that Majesco is back in the red again. As a result, they've stopped production of making more copies of the game...
If this is true, hopefully some other company will license the game and re-publish it, otherwise it might be crazy hard to come by in no time.

so i got mine at TRU today. I'm loving it but as already stated using the dual screen/touch screen features only make the game more awkward and are an unessary feature.
The biggest problem I see with the game is you are flying in what seems to be an invisible triangle. Why don't they let you use the whole screen? People who have played it probably know exactly what I mean. People who haven't there are invisible barriers in the game. The further you fly up the screen the less of it you can use. You can only go the whole width of the screen at the very bottom. I think this is done to create some perspective 3D effect.
Still a great game and worth picking up if you're a shmup fan but I thought I should mention the invisible walls so people know what there getting themselves into.

07-23-2005, 11:16 PM
Okay, this could be nothing more than a rumor, but I've heard that Majesco is back in the red again.
That's not a rumor, that's pure fact. Sales were off by some $50Mil and fiscal 2005 profit was a $16Mil loss instead of a $16Mil profit. The CEO also resigned when this news was released. Poor sales of Psychonauts and Advent Rising as well as slower sales for GBA Videos were the main factors for the decline.
As a result, they've stopped production of making more copies of the game...
That's the false part of the rumor. The fact is, based on the poor performance of other Majesco titles, only two national retailers have picked up the game in large numbers, Toys R Us and Wal Mart. It's unknown what Wal Mart did with their shipment, since I haven't seen it in the two stores I check regularly. Majesco also received a decent number at their warehouse this week, so if any stores re-order there are planty to go around. This info was all obtained from a Majesco employee (and long time friend) that was directly involved with Nanostray.

Is it similar to Axelay, if you've played it?
classicb
07-24-2005, 02:31 AM
sort of... but in Axelay if you run out of space on the edge you can still move to the side to get out of the way. In Nanostray you're on a fixed screen. I've been playing it alot today and you get used to it. Most of the flight paths are through the center so its not much of an issue.

Well, I JUST heard about this (yeah, I'm slow) and called my local TRU. Apparently, TRU Canada got a whopping EIGHTY-ONE copies....for all of Canada!!! :eek 2:
Seriously. That's all they have. I've got them making sure two come in to my local store (it comes in sometime this week in Canada) and are on hold for me. Best Buy here doesn't have it in their system, Wal-Mart has none, EB has none and aren't really getting it. Microplay is almost out of business here so there's no point in even checking. Yeesh. It's sad that Psychonauts sold so poorly...it's SUCH a great game! :( Crazy bastards. As for other stuff, I hear Advent Rising plays horribly though :(

I think there's a pretty good reason for that. Since the game is played at an angle (going "into" the screen) they did that so you really only have a fixed horizontal area to fly through. Otherwise if you were hugging one side of the screen and moved down, it'd technically have to move you horizontally as well to keep you on the screen. I'm sure that's not a very clear way of saying it, but it's all about perspective.
Also of note, to any shooter fans out there, start the game off on at least "advanced". "Normal" gives you infinite continues and makes your ship super durable. Too easy IMHO.

Ok, just got my copy off eBay.
Mighty impressed, and I'm blown away by the graphics.
However, weapon selection is nothing short of ridiculous. You just can't switch in the midst of a boss fight, and there are times when you need to. It's another game that uses the screen just to use it, much like Episode III (though at least they had alternate methods of doing the moves). You can't power-up the weapons either, so if you wanted to stick with a single weapon for the game, you really can't.
I see the complaint with the "triangle" movement, but it's neccesary for the perspective the game is set in. I see why it's a problem for some people, but it's never killed me, so I'm fine with it.
My other complaint is the difficulty. One hit deaths from collisions is fine, but when enemies come from every conceivable angle, and bosses that fill the screen move around, it's a bit much. I can't imagine trying to get through this with limited continues.
Other than that, a fantastic shooter from my short experience with it, though with Kirby and Meteos out there, buying it's a tough call.

Those are two great games but they will always be easy to find. Nanostray is still pretty available now if you have a TRU near you. I can imagine though by this time next year it might be a bit tougher to find a copy. Unless you're not a fan of shooters at all I'd pick this one up now.
Also for high score freaks the scoring in this game is very dynamic.

nice review but I can't help but think that the glaring flaw in the controls was done on purpose after some extended play. to achive the highest scores the game asks you to only use your regular fire button since any use of the sub weapon will break the chain of points accumulated from collecting the blue coins. the way I discovered that is the best way to play and get high scores is to play with one hand on the controls and the L button and use the stylus in my right hand to switch weapons. the yellow coins you get from bigger ships aren't worth much compared to taking out the waves of smaller ones for blue coins. while the switching between weapons is still akward at least you don't have to take your finger off the fire button.
BTW I have no idea what kind of plastic wrap my game had I tore that shit off as I was leaving the store. I guess I could go back to the parking lot and look for it.
