View Full Version : My biggest pet peeve: black back manuals

I hate them, because it's way too easy to get finger smudges on them unless you JUST washed your hands with soap, I much rather have the back manuals be any color other than black, that way the smudges don't show like a pimple on prom night.

Even worst is when you get a game and somebody else smudged it like hell. That's pretty disgusting.

Everytime I handle the back of a black manual I do so carefully, but no doubt a smudge always ends up on it and I go "damn you..." :P

Steven IS Phil Hartman AS The Anal Retentive Chef!

"And now we put our scraps into a paper bag, fold over one, two, three times and seal shut with a clear piece of tape and there we go. All ready for the garbage."

If that truly is your biggest gripe, then you live a near-perfect life. I am jealous.

LOL

Your post brought back fond memories of Phil Hartman. I had to borrow a little bit of your post, as I couldn't resist.

Steven - The Anal Retentive Gamer

"Before we actually handle the game, we are going to put on our white cotton gloves. Then we carefully remove the cartridge from the original box, with the factory shrinkwrap still on, being careful not to touch the black instruction manual and leave smudge marks on it. Now before we place the cartridge into the game console, we are going to take our cotton swab and carefully dip it into our bowl of rubbing alcohol, and gently clean the contact points on the cartridge. After we are done, we'll place the cotton swab into a paper bag, fold over one, two, three times and seal shut with a clear piece of tape and there we go. All ready for the garbage."

I must admit that I, too, am momentarily dismayed each time I find that I've put another irridescent fingerprint on an expensive import's manual's back black page.

Sucks.

The funny thing is, I've heard this complaint before but it was from a reader of Cerebus the Aardvark in the letters column.

Hmm...you don't have to take the manuals out in PSP games though!

I agree, black back manuals just give the impression of being icky, even if they aren't really.

All things considered, loose/scratched CDs are worse, but evident finger smudges just look gross.

Well, i'll have to go with the anal retentive one on this. PlayStation and N64 games in particular are the worlds worst for this syndrome, as most have black backs on them.

If it's even the slightest of warm days, and your fingers are slightly sweatty, you'll end up leaving a life-long set of fingerpronts on the back of the manual...

I actually think its something to do with the way they manufacture the manuals, and glaze them over...

And not only do you leave a fingerprint ~ It'll have a funny orange-brown tinge to it too... Yuk.

You got to stop eating Cheetos when playing your games. :-P
