The mall where I used to live in NJ (the Mall is now used-to as well :( ) had a small section of ride-on toys for little kids. One of them was a horse or wagon or both, but it had a small b&w monitor in it, and it was running a version of Atari 2600 Outlaw (where you have to shoot the wagon). I think I remember seeing it there as early as 1980, and they had it there through the 90s, which I could not believe. I never tried it, so I don't know what the object was. I don't even no what made me think of it after all these years. I always meant to take a picture of it, but I never did. Does anyone know anything about it? Hopefully this is the right forum to post this in. :)

How many 70's western shooting arcade games are there? It wouldn't make sense for an arcade/ride-on machine to have an Atari 2600 in it. Is there anything like that known? I know there is an Atari Outlaw machine and Midway Gunfight but there are probably more. I could see one of those games being made in to a ride.

The North Hanover Mall in Hanover PA had one of these in the early 80s. It has probably been about 20 years since I last saw it, but from what I remember it sure did look like the 2600 version. Definitely not the arcade Outlaw or Gun Fight.

What mall was it..?

It was the Middlesex Mall on the outskirts of South Plainfield, NJ.

If it really did use Atari Outlaw then it must have been a modified version.

It was definitely Outlaw, because I looked at it pretty closely after I started collecting (which was over 10 years ago). I wish I had had the foresight to take a picture or plop a quarter in, but I felt stupid doing that. :embarrassed: The attract screen had the wagon going by endlessly, which if I'm not mistaken, was one of the game variations in the cartridge.

Being it's a kiddie ride, it was probably either variation 15 or 16 (1 player, with wagon scrolling by)

I asked a couple people about this so far:

(David Crane)

Thank you Scott.

Man I love these boards sometimes. Where else can a regular guy ask a question about some obscure, half-remembered hardware from 25 years ago end in less that a week tune in for responses from the godfathers (or flat out GODS) of the industry?

Addiction and love aren't quite the same. :)

For what its worth I remember these games as well. I remember playing on a few other of them when my grandparents used to take me shopping with them when I was a young kid in the 70s. They were usually in front of or rightinside department stores. I know for a fact that there used to be one in front of Woolworth's in the Trumbull Shopping Center in Trumbull Connecticut back when I was young. I don't remember enough about it to remember exactly what game it was but it was definately a riding game with a built in screen with an Outlaw like game. After reading this question I must have spent HOURS online searching Google for a pictire of the game but I couldn't find anything.

It was certainly not sanctioned by Atari but I do remember coming across one of these in the late 80’s since my daughter was born in 1986.

Nope, never heard of such a thing. It certainly wouldn’t have been too hard to modify a 2600 to play as part of a ride, but to play only the stagecoach game version would have required a special ROM. Since that would have required reverse-engineering, one might assume that they licensed the code from Atari and had someone make the code change.

Waiting to hear from a couple well-known machine operators to see if they recall anything.

I just like how you "casually" ask David Crane, one of the biggest icons of gaming... @_@

Well, I remember the same thing here in Canada when I was a young boy (early 80's) but it was Activision's Stampede.

The kiddie ride was a horse with a monitor hook-up and buttons so you can play the game.

Yes, and who in the past has been very difficult to get a hold of, heh heh (well, in my experience), lol. He's usually very private, though he attends CGEs and such, as I understand it.
