View Full Version : A very basic Sega CD question

Last night, I opened a package containing both Popful Mail and Lunar 1 for the Sega CD.
My trip to geek heaven was short-lived, though, when the system told me I didn't have the 13 blocks of memory needed to save PM. (I did, however, have a block to save Eternal Champions).

Question, How do I manage save files with a Sega CD version 2? (side-by-side)

Sega CD has built in memory which - in your case - seems to be full already. Start up the system without a game, hit any button on the controller, and go to the memory screen. Clean out the old files and you're fine.

Hit start when the main splash screen comes up. It will take you to the CD Player screen. Make sure you have a game or disc in the drive. On the side menu, click on memory, and you should be all set to go from there. It's a rather clunky memory management format, but it gets the job done.

When the cd player screen comes up, where is the memory button? I see arrows for FF RW and play, then there is a program button and a "CD-G" button that I don't know what it does, but I can't seem to get the cursor to go there.

Is this that confusing? One person says make sure there is a disc in the drive while another says no disc. What a wacky system.

I’m at work, so I’m going by memory. But there should be a disc. My mistake. But, at the CD player screen, one of the buttons should be MEM or MEMORY or something like that…. That’s the one you want.

Thanks, I'm at work too, so I'll try tonight. Now I know how my father-in-law felt when we plopped a digital camera in his hands for his birthday. He looked at it like it was from the future or something.

Me, I can't figure out electronics from the past LOL

You do need a disc in the machine in order to access the memory part of the SCD2. You can either put the disc in after the SCD has gone to it's dashboard screen, or you can have the disc in from the beginning and push start as soon as the SCD opening logo screen starts up (I think the former method is easier since you don't have to catch it before the game starts up). Once there's a disc in the machine, you'll be able to access the CD functions on the right side. One of those is Memory (at the top right under CD-Rom). Go to that one, push the A button and it should be self explanitory from there.

What about memory cards? Isnt there some sort of storage device for the Sega CD? What does it look like? Where can I get one?

You mean the Sega CD Backup RAM Cart? It's the size and shape of a Genesis cart and plugs into the Genny. Expect to pay $30-$50 (or higher) for one.

There's one up now, in fact:
