Not sure if anyone watches Best Week Ever on VH1 (it's actually pretty funny and one of maybe... the one reason there is to watch the network). They did a spot on the GTA contriversy. I'm mentioning it simply because one of the snippets they showed was of a kid playing the game with a Dreamcast controller (they showed a nice close up of it as well). The next shot switched to an Xbox controller, I think it may have been different footage though.
Anyway, nothing new - we're all used to seeing any old controller being used in movies/commercials. Nice to see the Dreamcast controller being used though. For a moment it was like seeing what life would have been like if the Dreamcast didn't die (although I'm not sure GTA: San Andreas would have found its way onto the DC anyway... 8GDROMs?

DVD-edition DC, be it DC2 or an addition to the bottom, maybe a slot-loader.

Hey did you guys hear because of the new AO rating it's possible that some retailers will not take the game even after it's been rereleased with the M rating?
I find that utter bull, they should have no right in doing that IMO

I flipped by this before turning away in disgust (no, the game inaccuracies didn't bother me, just VH1's crop of "ooh, I wanna be in front of the camera" psuedo-celebrities annoy me to no end). They also had one of these faux-celebs pretend to be playing it with a Gamecube controller, a scenario almost as far-fetched as the DC GTA.

Retailers should have no say in what they do and do not sell? They should be *FORCED* to sell this game against their will?

That annoys me as well. These people get in front of the camera and start slamming stuff, but who the hell are they? Not that it would make any difference if it were real celebrities. It just seem like these shows (Best week ever, I love the 80's, etc) are just there to give these "up and coming" celebs more face time. 99% of their comments are pretty sad as well. *BUT* sometimes they have some pretty cute chicks on there.

my store, like a few others have our used and new copies behind the counter and enforce checking id before even ringing it up for the customer.

I've refused to rent the game to dozens of kids. I've had a few that were there with their parents who were renting it for them, and even after I get into detail about the language and hookers, they still rent it for their 10 year olds.
Oh well. I think that the game should have had an AO rating to begin with (you HAVE to admit, it WAS kinda pushing the envelope).
As far as retailers and renters not carrying AO titles, fine. Game stores, Best Buy and Wal-Mart SHOULD however. Game stores because they ARE game stores after all. Best Buy because, well, guess I don't care if they do or don't. And Wal-Mart, because they do in some stores have alerts that come up for certain products anyway that require some employee verification.
Just my opinion, though no one person, or one retailer can possibly enforce this. There needs to be a law, like with cigarettes and alcohol where the person behind the counter and store as well are liable for the sale or rent of AO and Mature games to customers.

Well I disagree that it should of been an AO from the beginning, I mean yeah it's grand theft auto but it's nothing a M rating that it had, it wasn't a terrible offensive game IMO and AO is going to far for the type of game it is, I mean can't even understand with the coffee mod that it's an AO rating,
o well, that's life

Back to the controller, I think they use the DC controller so often because they don't need permission from Sega, like they need from Nintendo, Sony, or Microsoft to use their controller.

No, just no. I they dont need permission from the table company to use the table, or the TV company to use the TV. DC controllers are cheap. Thats the only thing I can think of.

Yeah, I see your point as well. Though I don't think that GTA should have the same rating as MK Deception (yeah, they both have excessive violence, but GTA is much more reality based). Yeah, they have the details on the back, but maybe there should be a rating between "M" and "AO" (kind of like the new "E+10" rating). But, then maybe that would be just TOO many ratings. *sigh*
We need an "NC-17" style rating (between "R" and "X") for games.*
Though I still believe it's the responsibility of the parent to know what their kids are doing... Like THAT is ever going to happen. Even with all the controversey in the newspapers and television (since Doom and Mortal Kombat, though ESPECIALLY over the last year) it seems that most parents don't even know that games are rated and that game content can be just as bad or worse than some movies.
When it comes down to it, even after the powers that be come to a wise and effective system, people will still bitch and moan and sue over violent, profane and sexually explicit games because that's just the world we live in. What movies and music can get away with (because it's in the name of artistic expression) games will always be the target and focus of debate.
* of course, it could be said that that is exactly what the AO rating IS.

Isn't NC-17 the "new" X?

X ratings don't exist anymore.

fuck GTA SA.
X ratings don't exist anymore.
NC-17 replaced X. I believe it was because it was becoming so associated with pornos which, for the most part, were getting the X ratings. Of course, porn found a new home on video and was not really getting much in the way of theatrical releases (thus avoiding being rated by the MPAA).

I'm sure one of VH1's employees has a kid that plays videogames, they could just use that. A mystery for the ages.

Believe it or not, originally GTA III was started on the Dreamcast, and supposedly got a decent way into development before it was transferred to the PS2. I don't know how common that knowledge is...

The footage of the kids were edits anyways. They took some probably old footage of kids playing games and placed hot coffee over the screens. I thought it was pretty funny, "This is like that hidden Ms. Pac-Man level where Ms. Pac-Man serves it to Inky and Blinky!"
Too bad Michael Ian Black isn't on BWE like he was on I love the 90's...

GTA SA was brought up on "Weekends at the DL" on Comedy Central, where Lewis Black was on.
