While doing a little research in the guide regarding TurboGrafx stuff, I noticed that apparently, R-Type 1 and 2 were released seperately in Japan, while North America got both games combined into one HuCard which was just called "R-Type". However, I bought this game fairly recently, and I can't seem to find any option to play R-Type 2, and the manual mentions nothing about it either. I asked somewhere else about this apparent discrepancy, and it was suggested that the Japanese games were not actually R-Type 1 and 2 but "R-Type 1 Part 1" and "R-Type 1 Part 2", while the North American release was the full R-Type 1. So can anyone clue me into what's actually going on here?

It is just two halves of R-Type 1.

Yeah, that's right.

When you have completed the part one you're given a password which carried the weapons and lives you had over onto the part 2. That's how I remember it.

But there's a whole separate game, R-type II for the PC-Engine, right? The title screen is almost identical to the first one, except for the II, if I remember correctly.

Hmm. Mysterious. Irem released an R-Type 2 in arcades, and I thought this was ported to the PCE. There are a number of different R-Type games, so maybe both suggestions are true. The only real way to tell is to turn the games on and play through to the end.

As mentioned previously: when you complete "R-Type I" you are taken to "R-Type II" in the US version of the game. In the PC Engine version of R-Type the game ends and R-Type II is played as it's own game, completely separate from the first.

One of the few times that US audiences got the better deal - especially with PC Engine games.

The reason for the split is that the larger capacity hucard wasn't ready/cost effective when R-Type was ported in Japan, but with the later US release, so on, so forth.

Stunning showcase for the TG-16 hardware imo, fantastic game too. I play the hell out of my copy regularly.

Oh well, it's not like I can beat the 2nd level of this damn game in the first place

Try plugging in part II and starting on Level 5. It's totally impossible. I actually didn't know they had the password feature, so I was always starting with nothing.

Larger capicity huCard eh? No wonder I paid $70 back in 1990 for the damn game. Space Harrier too. Yeah I love R-type. I used to play it soo much back then and still enjoy it today even with all its flicker. Still holds up well today for me!

This is great news. Now I'll have to play through the game again. I'm meaning to do a write-up about R-Type, but I don't have to many insights yet. This should help steer me in the right direction.

I know that this is a TurboGrafx thread, but have any of you made it to the end of R-Type (or R-Type II) on the R-Types (PlayStation) disc?

To be exact. It's just good old original R-Rtype split in half.

"Part 1" contains stages 1-4
"Part 2" contains stages 5-8

I guess the password thing carries your weapons over, but seeing how in R-Type once you die once you start from scratch, unless you're really good it's useless.

I remember being a little confused because I knew (by reading about it) that the PC-Engine version had 2 cards for the game. But when the TG-16 came out and R-Type was released, it was only one card. I wondered if it had the full game in there, and sure enough it did. So oh well :)

Incidentally this was my 2nd version of home R-Type. The first version was the good ol SMS version which did a pretty good job considering :) But man, when I finally got the Turbografx version... you knew you were playing w/ POWER :D
