not sure if there is a post already for this, i did a few searches and came up with nada. so if there is a topic already, please point me in the right direction.
i am beginning to scan all my NES manuals (the whole entire manual). that way i can put them away and can always use the scans for reference's and what not. is there any pointers as to the size/quality i should use? i don't want them to take up more space than necessary, but i don't want a problem reading them either. any help would be greatlyappreciated.

Depends on the font size. Just scan them at say 150dpi, which should be enough, and then go from there and try resizing them to smaller sizes where they're still readable. And don't save as a low quality JPEG, because the artefacts might mess up the text and make it hard to read.

When scanning, put them face down.

With some scanners, you can scan your manuals as PDF files. The documents will be clear and the text can be edited if something didn't scan quite right.

when I scanned my manuals I removed the staples so that the paper would not rip. you have to be very careful as not to dammage the paper, but it works well.
you stay classy,

My advice is to only scan the ones that aren't al (http://www.hqscansorg.org/)ready (http://www.replacementdocs.com/news.php) scanned (http://mightymo.net/manuals.html). Then, please be kind and make those available to everyone. Cheers!

...and you can add http://vimm.net's manual project to the list of links above and see if there is anything you could contribute (assuming that project is still active).
Of course The Manual Project's still active! I consider 150 dpi png to be the bear minimum, though people insist on submitting 150dpi jpg's. There's a big difference and unless you have dial-up there's really no reason not to use png.
I also have an automated system where people can upload their own scans to the site instantly. It's not perfect yet, but it does seem to work most of the time. So, if you'd like to post your manuals when you're done just head over to vimm.net and add your work to the project!

Hey Vimm.
I have a few manuals read to scan.. I should be able to scan at 300 dpi with easy, but I am wondering if there is a good program for linux that lets you put it all in a pdf file.
Don't worry about making them into a pdf, they can be uploaded in a simple zip file as long as they all follow this naming convention...

Right now I'm resizing every image to 100dpi on viewing, but once I've identified the dpi of every image I'll allow users to choose their dpi both for online viewing and downloading (which is why I want pngs!). So don't be alarmed when your manual shrinks, it's just temporary and I do prefer 300dpi png for the most flexability.
