Game Gear - strange power problem (fixed)

I snagged a Game Gear today with a few games on the cheap. With the AC multiadapter provided the thing works perfectly. The trouble is, I put in a standard set of 6 AAs, and the thing won't last a minute before the power light starts blinking. This happens no matter what batteries I put in, but works fine running from the power adapter. I know Game Gears are notorious for draining AAs within a few hours, but a minute?

Please help, it's no longer portable! :(

EDIT VVV - The power gives out after about thirty seconds, maybe a little less. I'll give the battery connectors a good clean, then try your suggestion.

EDIt#2 - Well, I've just written an angry letter to the supermarket I bought the batteries from. They were all dead, all 100 AA batteries. :angry:

First thing to do is get a meter and measure the battery voltage of 6 brand new AA batteries. Then put them in the unit and when the light starts to blink take them out and measure them again. If they are at the same voltage as when you put them in, then the battery indicator is faulty. If they are truly getting run down that fast (if they were they would be red hot) then something really wrong is occuring. How long does the unit last after the blinking starts? It might be something you can ignore.

i had the same problem,open it up and check if the wires going to the connector wer you put the battries in are not loose or try using some top brand battries as some cheapo type ones tend to fail straight away
