Now, just so we're clear, I'm talking about Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for the NES. The first one.
Anyway, I've seen a number of cheats/eater eggs from several sources, that just don't work! Did someone make these up just to piss people off?

First off the following cheats are from gamewinners.com, a very reliable site for game secrets and strategies..

Cheat mode:
Press Up(2), Down(2), Left, Right, Left, Right, A, B, Start at the title screen.
Information in this section was contributed by Redskin4Lf.

Level select:
Press Down(5), Right(7), B, A, Start at the title screen.
Information in this section was contributed by mbloom.

Go into the water:
Get close to the water, then press Start, Right(5), Down(5), Up(2), Down(2), Select, Start.
Information in this section was contributed by Ka0sL0Rd."
(Source, http://www.gamewinners.com/nes/TMNT.htm)

Now I've tried all of those several times, and got nothing.. so I just assumed they were bogus.. but another infamous cheat was some magical 2 player mode.. I read about this cheat years ago in a code magazine... It annoyed the hell out of me, because I thought it would've been fun to play the first TMNT with 2 people..

Now that had left my mind, until today, I was looking through Digital Press' very own rarity guide, and it lists it as an Easter Egg!

Here's the quote..
"Easter Eggs: You can play the game with two players! From the title screen just press Select and Start."

Am I just incredibly stupid, and uncapable of entering cheats.. or is this some strange rumour that spread, and people list it without even testing it out?

Well?

Game kiddies can be incredibly stupid. Ninja Turtle fans especially so.

The first code looks like a mutation of a code for TMNT 2. The second one definitely is. I've lost track of how many times - more than three - that I've seen the codes for TMNT 2 printed incorrectly. Usually as "A, B, start". Come on folks, if you don't know your Konami code it's time to sell all your stuff real cheap on Ebay. Especially those three copies of Stadium Events your grandma gave you. Nobody needs three videogames anyway. Another common error is when they fail to mention the fact that you need to HOLD the B and A buttons in TMNT 2. This goes against Konami standards, but hey, it's not a Konami game - it's an ULTRA game.

(yes, I know Ultra was a subsidary of Konami. There really needs to be a smiley for :irony: )

I met a gamer one day, can't remember who it was, who was insistant that the Konami code was "up up, down down, left right, left right, b, a, b, a, start". Man it felt good showing him that he was adding an extra BA.

As for the "go into the water" code... man this reeks of bogus.

Two players... again, this is probably for TMNT 2, and that's just incredibly stupid - some poor kid looking at the title screen, wondering how to move his Turtle cursor down to 2P. *insert annoying laughing smiley here*

The only code that I know of for the first TMNT involves not bitching about the dam stage. If you bitch about the dam stage, you will "fit in" for a while amongst other scientifically advanced people, but there's a crowd that will laugh at your weak ass. Like me.

Oh, and there's lots of places where you can get unlimited pizzas... but it's hardly a code.

It's surprising a publication with as good a reputation as DP would list such a flagrant error, but then again, they don't have me as an editor. :D

Oh, and in re: your sig... Nick Phillips? Uhh... you do know that this is a song written by Fred Schneider and Ricky Wilson, right? Right?

...right?

...I'm beginning to feel like an old grandaddy... (the.. um... family relation, not the spankin' new fangled spacewave band)

...please say the kids still know the B-52s...

...please...

....right?

There's only two "codes" (most likely glitches) in the game. All the others are bullshit.

Disappearing Roller Cars (Stage 3)
While in the party wagon in Stage 3, whenever you see the roller cars, hit select to make them disappear.

Easy Way To Defeat Giant Mouser (Stage 4)
Mouser will open his mouth revealing a red circle which is his weak point. He will close it and the circle will disappear. However pause the game and unpause. Mouser's mouth will be closed but the circle will be there to hit. Use this for a fast way to kill him.

My favorite code in TMNT 2 is the one where you can play as Simon Belmont. Best cheat EVER!

Yeah, the dam stage was always a pain in the butt. For me as a kid it was the 3rd stage one those jumps before climbing out of the sewers to fight the boss.

But yeah, by now most of us should have the Konami code implanted in our brains after using them so many times.

Well, duh... "Rock Lobster" is like one of my favorite songs. The B-52s are great.

The thing is, the 2-player code for the orignal made it into the guide too. I've been meaning to ask this for a LONG time. Thanks for bringing it up Veep. It's the type of code I can't imagine wouldn't have been in EGM years ago.

So who is Nick J. Phillips, and why is this quote attributed to him? Or is that like a quote without attribution, then your name?

It annoys me when people do that, but then again, I can give you a long list of things that annoy me more, Like this: ROFL or the bunny smiley which I can't trigger.

Anyway, why must you deny Dr. Fred Schneider the credit he so richly deserves? Is this part of some counter conspiracy to take your annoyances out on him? The B-52's kinda make annoying things even more annoying - at least in my experience - so is this like some sort of annoyance warfare?

(imagine this - you're spending some time with your grandma out of guilt. The streets are lined with girls who are beyond merely beautiful, all with signs over their head "Help me!!". Some guy walks up to one of them and stands on her feet, and she immediately jumps up, kisses his cheek, and follows him everywhere. Yes, EVERYWHERE. But you're with grandma and she's kinda uptight about youth cavorting so freely. Then some guy comes up to you and laughs in your face.

Annoying.

Then he bursts out singing 6060-842.

More annoying.

I actually though the Street Fighter II Shen Long trick was the best that EGM came up with.

Yeah, it's my name. A very nice lyric followed by name.. I mean I didn't really think they're be any confusion as to where the quote came from.. but if it's too mind-blowing, I'll just remove it.

Absolutely. And strangely, that was their first, I believe. It was awesome to ee it printed in other mags...
