View Full Version : Should I buy a Gamecube?

I've been umming and ahhing about this for a while now. I've found a gamecube for £30 and I'm trying to decide whether or not to buy it. It's boxed and black which is what I'd go for in a GC. I'm not sure how many controllers, most likely 1.
I've got a PS2 but no xbox. I was sort of wondering about xbox as well, but they're £60. Xbox doesn't have as many unique games as the Gamecube. I like the look of the cartoony games. They don't seem any more childish than the games we all play on SNES Megadrive, etc.
My only problem is that some of my friends have been saying they're crap. But they're the ones without Gamecubes so I'm not sure whether to trust them. The only person I know with one is trying to sell his to me, so he's going to be saying it's great.
The other option would be a few games for the ps2. The new Hitman game comes out next month, doesn't it?

I have a PS2 and a Cube, no XBox.
Most of my current gen games are for the PS2, but the Cube has some great exclusive games: Metroid Prime (+ Echoes), Resident Evil / Biohazard, Starfox, Pikmin, Zelda and lots more cartoonsy games. I really like the Cube, but I hate that some of the really good games don't stay exclusive, i.e. Killer7 and Viewtiful Joe got a PS2 port, as well as Resident Evil...
Don't know the prices in the UK, but if 30 is a good offer, go for it!

i like the cube! 8-) cartoony games is one of the reasons that make the nintendo game cube a great console. the controlls are friendly and makes it easy to go through levels like no one else's business. there are many game cube exclusive titles ie. mario games/zelda's, etc. one thing that is upsetting is when xbox and ps2 have games that aren't on the cube. so since you have a ps2, you don't have to worry about most games that don't make it to the nintendo line up. of course you'll miss out on games like newer versions of halo and other stuff. i have a xbox and cube....i find the cube more exciting to collect/play for. to me, it seems the game cube games hold their value just fine. :)

The Gamecube is an amazing console. To me, it exceeds the cababilities of the Xbox and the PS2.
I love the cartoony, child-like graphics that most of the games have. It really makes you feel like a kid again.
Its got a great library too. Go for it
Go for it...
Metroid, Zelda, Mario, F-Zero, Konga, RE4, Pikmin, SmashBros.
There are definitely enough exclusives to warrant owning one and at THAT price it's a must. I admit my weapon of choice is the PS2 but I couldn't NOT have a GC as well purely for the exclusives. And it's tiny and cute :D

The cartoony games are fun. Most of the non-exclusive titles run better on the cube than on the ps2. I have both.
Besides, it has zelda. I haven't been a big nintendo fan since the days of the nes, but I have to admit the cube has been my best purchase in the past 3 years or so.

I just got a Gamecube Pokemon Pak brand new for 85 euros. I don't know what's included wth the 30 pounds deal, but I think it's not that cheap. Although when it is with game and memorycard it would be ok. I am realy happy with mine, I will never touch the Pokemon dics, but as it was brand new and included a memorycard and gba link-cable I couldn't resist to get one. I only have one game I play new PSO Epidosde III: Card Revolution which is good fun, now I need to get a broadbandadapter.

The following thread oughta give you an idea of the best games available on the GCN, including indications of the titles exclusive to the console.

(Most of these games were released in Europe, so you should be able to find them in the UK.)

I would buy it. I bought mine just last week for $60 and it came with the GBA adapter (I just need the start up disc). I already have the Zelda collection disc for it from a previous hunting trip. Nintendo has an excellent history when it comes to putting out a great console. I wasn't a big fan of the N64 but the cube made up for it (IMO).

A bunch of great games have been mentioned for the gamecube and I agree that you should definately get it. However, if you haven't played a GC then you most likely have never played....
ANIMAL CROSSING! :king:
It's a neat little game and certainly worth picking up a cube for.
Ribbit King is also worth looking into, I think it's still cheap on ebay.
Buy the Cube!

Thanks for the feedback. Looks like a Gamecube is in line for me, then. I'll have to save a bit of money to get some games with it, first. I could probably pick it up this weekend. Hopefully no one will have taken it by then.
The Xbox just doesn't seem worth spending £60 when I've already got a PS2.

i would get the gamecube first, but i would def consider an xbox down the road when they are cheaper. its got jade empire, halo 1,2, rallisport 1,2, project gotham 1,2, forza, star wars kotor 1, 2, best versions of splinter cells, best versions of gta's, ninja gaiden, fable, panzer dragoon orta (basically a ton of great games)

Yeah, except that Kotor 1 and 2 are also available for Mac and PC.

I have a PS2 & GC. For the record I have no touched my GC in months, but it has recieved lots of love in the past. LOTS. There just hasn't been much released lately that's been of any intrest to me. For that price though, its totally worth it. And the new Zelda is coming out (the only reason I'm still holding on to mine). I'd highly recommend checking out Animal Crossing, Pikmin, Luigi's Mansion and Mario Golf.

I've got all three, and if my cube could play DVD's I probably wouldn't hook up the XBOX(Unless I really needed some Shenmue II). The PS2 is cool, with Square and Enix, but Gamecube has Nintendo and a lot of Sega exclusives. So, if you like Mario, Zelda, or Sonic, go for it.

I love my Gamecube
I would definitly recommend to get the Gamecube
especially with the Calibur of games such as Resident Evil 4, Super Smash Brothers Melee
those are just the tip of the iceberg, the gamecube is definitly a great system to own

I finally had a chance to play Pac-Man Vs. with some friends this past weekend and just thought I'd chime in that if you're looking for an excuse to buy a GC it's a good one if you've got friends to play with.
There's something about finally getting to play as a ghost that is just *immensly* satisfying :D

As someone said to me when I asked the same question...
If you're asking us, you've really already made up your mind and just want us to reinforce your decision.
I think you should get it. Hell, after finally breaking down and getting one, I've been amazed by how much I like it. Now, the GameCube is the first system I've ever owned two of, and I buy GC games constantly to check out and play to the point they have almost eclipsed my year-older Xbox in terms of quantity. There is some really sweet stuff on the Cube.

I would buy one. Even if it is only for the Twilight princess.

I like the Gamecube so much I have two of them. :)
Even though not many games utilize it, I think the Gamecube-to-GBA connectivity is a totally cool feature. I know that Animal Crossing, Pac-Man Vs., FF Crystal Chronicles, and Zelda Four Swords have GBA connectivity - any others?

I personlly bought a Game Cube before, PS2 or Xbox. It's still the "this gen" console I respect the most. It also has many excellent exclusives while many of the Xbox exclusives are truely console exclusives only and have PC versions. Also many Game Cube games support Progressive Scan, which is great if you have a TV to support it.
Here's what I reccommend:
Super Smash Bros. - The Ultimate multiplayer game. It's nearly 4 years old and still one of the Game Cube's best. A great "drunk" game.
Resident Evil 4 - Still an exclusive and appears to be graphically nicer than the upcoming PS2 port.
Tales of Symphonia - The ONLY RPG of this gen I have enjoyed the whole way through.
Baten Kaitos - Excellent RPG than can be purchased for $10 now.
Metriod Prime 1&2 - Great Action/FPS... Much better than Halo's single player.
Eternal Darkness - Strange and spooky survival horror game.
Zelda Series - Wind Waker is good despite it's overall dissaproval by many. Twilight Princess seems to be turning into a true sequel of Ocarina of Time.

If you can afford it, buy every current system.
Buy it, and save for GC games, because you'll be doing us all a favor by helping get Nintendo back to the #1 spot where it belongs.
BTW, does anyone have the total sales of the GC, PS2, and X-Box?

That's very true LOL I was having doubts because a few of my friends were saying it's crap. But as I said, none of the ones saying it's crap have actually owned a GC.
The vote seems unanimous now.

Zelda - The Windwaker has GBA connectivity. If you hook up a GBA to the 2nd port, you get Tingle on the GBA to assist you with a sea-map and I think he can also throw bombs at enemies. Link needs to find a special item, before he can use the connectivity, though.
I'm sure there are more games with a connectivity feature, but can't remember right now.
I'd get one one. I have a PS2 & Gamecube, it's the perfect gaming combo.

Meh I wouldn't really bother, the system is a huge disappointment IMHO, you might as well just hire a GC and Zelda TTP when it comes out.
Than again there are a few great games on GC such as SSBM and Resident Evil 4.

The GC was my first of the current systems. I probably now prefer the XBox most of the three but it's still a solid system and has many excellent games exclusive to it. The older games should be cheaper as well. If there are a number of games for it you think you'd enjoy, you should go ahead and get it. You shouldn't listen to the naysayers. Your opinion is the only one that counts since you're the one who'll be buying it and playing it.

I've got all three current systems and the cube is my favorite so i'd say pick it up. It has the best exclusive games and best graphics IMHO. The game boy player is nice too.
