Whatever happen to western themed games? Sunset Riders, and Iron Horse being two examples of great western games. I recall Gun.Smoke being an innovative shooter as well.
I'll admit I haven't been following game production in recent months, but there doesn't seem to be any western themes out there. Am I missing something?

The only sort of western themed game (and it's a bit of a stretch) I remember liking is Tapper!

You're right! I can't think of anything more recent than Rising Zan with a cowboy theme to it (even if it was a ninja cowboy!)
There need to be more cowboy games. Or how about a cowboy RPG? Damn that would be sweet!
There's some sort of Western game coming for the PS2 (from Capcom maybe?). The name escapes me at the moment, but I believe you play a gunfighter.

Sunset Riders and Gun.Smoke kicked ass! I'd love to see an arcade perfect version of Sunset Riders come out on a compilation disc.
Ever try The Lone Ranger for the NES? That's the closest thing I've seen to a cowboy RPG.
I've often thought about that myself. I am a big fan of western history, I read up on the gun fighters, natives, and everything of that period. Thats when I'm not playing videogames...

Yep, Red Dead Revolver (http://www.gamespy.com/e32002/ps2/reddeadrevolver/).

How about a modern day remake of Custer's Revenge.
YeeHaw.
I don't know if they could get it past the ratings board.

Hmm.... What comes to mind...
Wild West COWBoys of Moo Mesa
Lethal Enforcers 2: Gun Fighters
Tin Star
Live-A-Live (has a nifty Western chapter)
These are all stretching it more than a little, of course.

Don't forget "Law of the West" for the C64. Great shooter/role-playing thingy. (Kind of a hybrid)

There was Mad Dog McCree in the arcade, and some LucasArts FPS (Outlaws I think).
I always liked Express Raider and Blood Bros. (western version of Cabal).

Actually, speaking of Western themes....Wild Arms 3 for PS2 is supposed to have a heavy Western theme to it....and Wild Arms 1 had a bit of one...but not heavy.
Other than that....if they make a Trigun game, it'll be Western style :)

Now that I think about it, Bank Panic (arcade) also sounded pretty good.

If a western themed game is going to be made it has to be good. The ones they've tried to make recently sucked. Bad camera angles, sound, and the ones with online multiplayer constantly slowed duing gameplay. I'm just saying that I'm not buying one more unless it's actually good.

That's the lasttt one I read a review about and it was a while too.

The genre of the "western" in general has sort of fallen out of favor. You don't see too many "western" movies getting made nowadays, either.
Game companies are probably just following the lead of movies, books, etc. and giving people the generic genres that they're comfortable with - sci-fi, fantasy, crime drama, and all that stuff. It's easier to market that way because there's already a shared semiotic vocabulary in the genre that people will be able to understand.
A game that encapsulated all the coolest parts of the wild west - gunfights in the town, stage coach and train robberies, circling the wagons and defending them from attack, herding cattle, hunting buffalo, etc. - would be a pretty cool game. You'd need a lot of very wide-open game spaces, though, and probably a random-terrain generator.

Dead Mans Hand hit multiple consoles, I think. Samurai Western just came out, though it's not truly a western game with the samurai aspect.

Woot! I loved Gun.Smoke as a kid! I remember finding it again at the dirt mall, but I was concerned about the dirty contacts. The kid running the booth popped it into an NES and played it about five seconds before he got killed. He handed the controller to me and said "Go ahead". I blasted thru the first level without losing a life, the entire time the kid was gaping in awe. At the end of the level, he looked at me and said "You musta spent WAAYYY too much time playing these games."
Sadly, he closed his booth some time ago. I still see him there occasionally and we usually chat a few minutes about games (mainly what I found at other vendors)
Sunset Riders is an awesome game too. I remember playing it with a group of friends once, and the bonus stage music inspired one of them to freestyle a hilarious song about shooting rednecks. We still sing that song to this day whenever we see any truely hickish rednecks.
