As some of you know, i am big on collecting wonderswan stuff, its the only system i REALLY collect for. Today i recieved a few more games to add into my slowly but steadily growing library. but what was different is that when i saw the box they were in i cringed in horror. It was crushed in the middle like someone was trying to fold it  . i knew when i'd open the box it would hae not been a pretty site.
the once prestine game boxes now looked as if they had scoliosis. mangled-to-shit. i took pictures ASAP just incase the post office wasnt willing to help me and i wanted to show the seller the damage done by our trusty postal service. the pics make me think of a friggin surveying of a car crash.
So after that i got dressed and drove off to the post office to see if they could do anything about it. granted the package wasn't insured but how the fuck do you crush a god damn box  ? needless to say, i didnt get any form of reimbursement for the damages.
so now i need to contact the seller and see what we can do about it :(
here are the pics:

HOLY CRAP. And heres me complaining about a tiny dent on a game gear box after it was jammed in the mail box.
Totally ruined, I guess you'll have to start using insurance, but the thought of a big box like that getting crushed wouldn't cross your mind.
Sorry dude.

Whatever you do, leave the seller out of it, it's not the sellers fault whatsoever that your games got crushed, he has no responsibility to replace, refund or help you in any way on this manner if you did not buy insurance.
Lesson: Buy insurance next time. Spend 1.50, save 2 games.

Ouch! Reminds me of the time I spent $75 on the complete VHS set of Henson's Dinosaurs and the box came completely fucked and empty. Yes empty, nothing inside. The guy actually wrote on the outside of the box what its contents were and I got ripped off.

Good, cause I've gotten e-mails from people that didn't buy insurance before and had the USPS fuck it up and expect a refund from me.
Nothing annoys me more than that. LOL

they just throw boxes around
have you ever gone inside a ups center - you can see the employees rolling boxes, slideing them, tossing them, sitting on them, crushing them to fit into a space they cant go into - paying for quality shipping is a joke

Yeah tell me about it. Back in the day I once recieved a gift certificate from Nintendo in the mail (about 3 months late) that was ripped in half and stuck in a plastic bag with a sorry note from USPS. What the hell? I could understand mangling or bending it, but a complete tear?

Hehe, I'm glad the Royal Mail only has a small area to deliver to, compared to USPS. Our stuff normally gets here safe and sound.

Well postoffice isn't exactly staffed with the most intelligent people. In certain area's they'r eknown for prolific drug use and inconsistancy in their service. Luckily my area is pretty ok when it comes to stuff like this.
On the other hand, UPS stuff always comes kinda crushed. Guess it depends on the area.

Wow. I guess I'm extremely lucky. None of my experiences with the post office have been negative.
In fact I've had people send stuff to the wrong address and have it arrive.
I'll be off by myself for a while, counting my blessings...

One thing that bothers me is that whenever they are weighing the package the postal clerk always asks if its "fragile, liquid or perishable". If I'm shipping Sega CD or Saturn games I always say fragile. Then they stamp fragile on the box, and then he/she turns around and throws, not tosses but THROWS the box six feet into a bin of other boxes. I never understood that.

I write Fragile on all of my game packages myself (especially in the case of DAMN FRAGILE PSX games), Do Not Bend for Pokemon TCG cards (yeah, I used to collect them; some of them are actually worth something), etc.
There are intelligent people at my post office too. Any game that I can't replace for $10-20 (ex: the almost complete Valkyrie Profile -it was missing the front insert- I shipped a week ago) is insured when I send it as well.
The OP got the bottom of the barrel of post office staff, apparently. Small PO's like the one in Corydon, KY (where I live, obviously) seem to care more.

My two zenny:
I think saying "F the USPS" is WAY harsh. Is your box damaged? Yes. Were the items inside damaged? Yes. But come ON. I mean, it's understandable that you're upset, who wouldn't be? But how many letters, bills, packages have you received in your lifetime that were on time, early, undamaged, etc.?
The USPS has a pretty good batting average. It's not fair to call them out as a horrible organization just because you got one crunched up box.
And, like Cmosfm mentioned, if you didn't spend the $1.30 on insurance, you have nobody to blame but yourself. Chalk it up to experience and move forward. Given the massive amounts of shit the USPS takes from people on a daily basis despite an extremely good track record overall, the last thing they need is someone complaining about one box. Cut the PO a break.
Plus, at least you got your games. I once got an envelope full of important stuff that looked like it went through a shredder. The contents were missing, but I got the envelope. LOL Despite that, I still think the PO does a great job nearly all the time. Nobody's perfect; it's unfair to expect the PO to be.

Sorry to hear...
..................
Holy Shit!!! looks to have been ran over while been processed in the post office (or regional procccessing center).
I can't say this ones been ran over by a forklift as I've heard about, but maybe one of the personal transporter car...(looks like a golf cart)...due to the amount of damage.
If a box falls off a stacked cart been pulled around or while put in a truck by forklift they will not stop to pick it up..if it gets ran over they don't give a shit..It's once piece in thousands of pieces of mail...It's a fast and furious process moving mail around in the bigger places..
Damaged stuff is usually due to a lazy worker who stacked to high....rushing etc..
Insurance is the only answer..
The safest boxes to ship are the Priority mail boxes...they still do have a percentage of getting ruined though but not as much as other things.(Easily Stackable)
The worst thing to ship that the Post Office hates,Is Tubes, elongated boxes...Fishing Rods are notorious for getting destroyed.
If the item is hard to stack it's more liable to fall off a pallet,or cart...It's all about fast stacking to these guys.

That is bad. Very bad. I thought your game boxes were bags at first glance.
The unfortunate thing, other than your ruined boxes, is that almost every delivering service is going to foul up a package big time sooner or later. I've had packages destroyed by USPS (box was "converted" into an envelope by someone's fat ass...postman actually threw the package over my backyard fence...nice delivery), FedEX (squashed again with two nicely centered boot prints decorating the outside of the box...) and UPS (managed to get the bottom half of a huge box filled with books wet...as if they had dipped it into a kiddy pool like a donut in coffee).
I've had good luck with Airborne and DHL so far...but I'm not holding my breath.
Hopefully those weren't terribly expensive games (I dunno anything about wonderswan). =(

Hehe, I'm glad the Royal Mail only has a small area to deliver to, compared to USPS. Our stuff normally gets here safe and sound.
I'm an American that recently moved back here after living for a year in England, and I had nothing but bad experiences with Royal Mail. Well, I take that back--I loved how the mail was consistently delivered at like 8 AM Monday-Saturday, and I loved that you could put a letter in a mailbox at 6PM Friday and reasonably expect it to get to the opposite side of the country by 8AM the next day. But seriously, in the 12 months I lived there, I had probably upwards of ten letters/packages lost (no, I am not exaggerating), one of which had tracking on it, and the tracking showed that it was delivered when it wasn't (that one was eventually found though, luckily).
I have never had serious problems with the USPS, but have had tons of problems with UPS, including them returning items to the sender deeming them "unshippable" for no discernable reason, delivering my boxes to the wrong address (that's happened a bunch of times; the school across the street from my house invariably gets anything that UPS is supposed to bring to my house), etc.
And, more on the subject, yeah, that totally blows about the destruction of the Wonderswan games, and you have every right to be angry, but I agree (for the most part) with those who say that the USPS should be forgiven. So many letters and packages go through them any given day, some are bound to get mangled.

Nope, not for USPS. You need the insurance reciept, which the sender of the item will have. So you'll need them to mail it to you, then you'll need to head to the PO and fill out some forms. If its a small claim its alot easier and faster to claim. They'll take your item though... So unless you don't mind parting with it making a claim on a not completely demolished item usually isn't best, especially for rare stuff.

wait, did the actual games get damaged, or just the boxes? they do look pretty beat up, but if the game carts themsleves arrived okay, all i can offer is a great big "Meh", and a "Buy insurance next time, kiddies". i understand that the games are worth more boxed, but i mean come on, they're just cardboard boxes.
on the other hand, if the games were damaged, i would just say maybe contact USPs, contact the seller, and you might be able to get a refund. also, let this be a lesson to everyone to:

Thanks for saying pretty much what was on my mind there. Probably more politely than I would've said because I'm just a bit biased. :) For what it's worth, even if you use DHL, UPS, FedEx, or anything else where you're not carrying the stuff cross-country in your own back seat, everything shipped through those carriers makes at least part of its journey through the U.S. Postal Service. So their record, while perhaps not spotless, is still pretty good.
Also, the USPS is constantly being asked to move more stuff, in less time, with less people, as their operating budget is cut back more and more in areas where it counts the most: equipment and personnel. They're asked to meet ridiculous deadlines with too few people to do the work. Sad to say, but once in a great while, things like this are bound to happen under those circumstances. And like Arcade Antics said, I'm not sure that merits a "fuck the Postal Service," it just means they're doing the best they can with what they've got. And with DHL, FedEx, UPS, etc. quietly using the USPS as part of their "backbone" and then claiming that they have more reliable service  ...well...you might as well just cut out the middleman and use the USPS anyway. (My opinion there, of course.)
This is definitely a case where insurance is the only thing that would have saved the day.

After watching MIB 2 we know that the Postal Service is run by aliens.... and King of Queens teaches us a lesson for parcel delivery.... so what did you expect?
German postal service can be a pain either. I tend to pay for insurance, partly because of the bad experience with the postal service, partly because of ebay frauds who tend to not send packages, when you don't buy insurance and then argue they sent it and blame the postal service. Of course you can never be 100% sure on this, but if the negatives come rolling in on his ebay profile... When it happened to me, I must've been one of the first victims, because I nearly never bid on items from bidders with negative rating.

(Sorry, just seems like fucking is the fucking word of the moment, but y'know, if we go fucking saying it all the time, it's bound to lose its fucking impact sooner or later.)
Since I evidently didn't state it clearly enough: part of the reason things like this happen is because postal service management presses the people who actually handle and move your packages to get more stuff moved, get it moved faster, and to handle stuff that they have to move for other shippers like DHL, UPS and so on. All of this despite cutbacks and pressure to lower the headcount of employees and cut their wages. Do postal employees require a "bonus" to handle your packages properly? No. That is not what I said. The post office needs to be able to hire the number of people it needs at competitive wages in order to get this stuff moved on time. Otherwise, you have too few people doing too much of the work...and stuff like this happens.
I'm sorry someone's games got crunched. I'd be pissed too. But paying for insurance would've at least gotten him reimbursed for the games' value, and he could've gone looking for copies in better condition.
And you know what? No matter where he got them from, they'd still go through the postal service at one point or another.
The original poster seems to have gotten over his initial anger and gotten that hint - I'm not getting on his case. The people who are saying "Yes! And they don't deliver on Sundays! So fuck them all!" aren't operating on information - just a knee-jerk reaction and a mob mentality.

That is terrible damage..
The postal service here was OK but lately its been CRAP!
Royal Mail..
I had a package from France the other day... sent in a box, the box was RIPPED OPEN and squashed, the tear was the size of a human hand.
The games were LOOSE inside, the seller said they put a game gear game (in cardboard box) inside another box.. this was nowhere to be seen.
Im pretty sure someone at the sorting office is tampering with my mail. Im not sure what to do.
The Game Gear game was squashed and ripped.
I got another package today, from Japan. The game was squashed (Super 32x game) actually, my dad heard the postman, I think he was trying to SHOVE IT THROUGH THE LETTERBOX
Despite it being marked "FRAGILE" it doesnt make a jot of difference.
Ive worked at Royal Mail and see the "old hands" throwing, sitting, and lugging around "FRAGILE" marked boxes. The only post that gets treated with ANY respect is special delivery, recorded delivery is a joke it goes missing all the time. While most postmen are honest, decent guys, some of them reguarly ROB DVDs. games etc.. especially I believe when it has telltale "amazon.co.uk" packaging...!

Wow, in 40,000+ post office shipments, I've never seen one that bad. Then again, it's better than not getting it at all. The post office loses roughly 1-2 out of every hundred packages I send according to my buyers. 98% of packages delivered is a HORRIBLE amount.
Of course, that's according to my customers...... I've never had a package lost in the mail to be delivered to me, and only one payment ever that was lost in the mail on it's way to me.

Yeah, that sucks when that happens. But it was just your turn at bat.
- A car runs a red light and plows into you. Wasn't your fault, you did everything correctly, but your car's fucked up anyway.
- Your house has a tree fall on it after a severe windstorm. Wasn't your fault, you did everything correctly, but your house still has a big hole in the roof anyway.
- A package you were waiting for - properly packaged and mailed - arrives crushed and stomped on. Wasn't your fault, you did everything correctly, but your games are fucked up anyway.
But with car insurance, house insurance, and - ahem - MAIL INSURANCE, you could easily have the damaged items repaired, replaced, or get your money back. I've had each of the three above occur. And, since I have ALWAYS used insurance (especially on uber-valuable items), I've been able to get my money back or a replacement.
So consider it a lesson learned. Sucks, yes. But always plan for the worst so you're never caught with your pants down when the "worst" actually happens.

i don't think it's mob mentality
i think many people here got frelled by the various postal services more than once and are pissed about it.
i certanly am pissed - i get crushed mail all the time - i have had to re- order sega cd and staturn games many times becasue the postal service decided to hit my package with a sledge hammer or someones big ass.
i have had mail come to me from usps (various services), fed ex, ups, dhl - and had packages destoyed from all of them.
I even recive opened mail (gladly all items were in the box at those times) - frekin opened!!
i recived a package from DHL that was torn open and re sealed with paper (paper dosent hold jack) and a note on it saying an employee had opened it - no apology or anything
the postal services advertise QUALITY SHIPPING - to me that means safe and secure shipping - we shouldnt have to buy insurance - thats ludicrous - if we have to buy insurance then the postal service advertizements should say - we ship, at your own risk ---yes, yes, they have disclaimers and fine prints that say this but that should be for the rare cases -- all these complaints don't seem to be rare. It's false advertizing.
I dont buy insurance becasue i think its just a bulshit way for them to get more of your money that dosen't do anything to insure your package is safer. My friend who also collects has had his packages smashed and he always used to get insurance and a few times when he tried to fille his claim they told him to get lost hes not getting anything.
It's not mob mentality when everyone in the group is there for being wronged-
i wish something could be done to get the postal services to treat your packges with actual care.
Thanks to Flack, PDF & others who can maintain a level head & clear thinking over this matter.
To those who think anal penetration & other crass demands would actually help the situation, grow up & get a life. Your responses have taught me much about what kind of a person you are.
The USPS processes literally millions of letters, packages/parcels, & other information a day, all for varying degrees of payment, & yes, services. I'm not saying the USPS should bash up your stuff if you dont pay enough, but as was previously pointed out, something is bound to happen w/ such incredible volumes of mail going through the system. I work for the USPS (on letter-sorting/barcode machines), & have for nearly 15 years in some capacity, & honestly I wonder sometimes how we do it. PDF really hit the nail on the head in his posts. We have a really good customer satisfaction rate for what we do. Most people take their daily mail for granted, but have you ever thought about what it goes through to get from Point A to Point B?
And for whoever was pissed over no Sunday delivery, ARE YOU CRACKED? People crave their weekends- USPS residential delivery takes ONE DAY OFF, & that doesnt mean the mail stops moving- behind the scenes, WE DONT CLOSE. I work Saturday & Sunday nights, & weekends are like "catchup days". There was even mention some time ago of decreasing delivery another day- Wednesdays ideally- to catch up.
What about the mail you DO receive intact every day? It's a hell of a lot more than the mangled stuff you get, I'll bet. If you do consistently/repeatedly get chopped up mail, inform your local PO- they'll be happy to help.

Like I said. It's their job to get it from point A from point B safely. Just like any other job, when you make a mistake, it's worth complaining about. If a doctor fucks up on your sister's simple tonsilitis operation, and she dies, the fact that the very same doctor has several patients every day, and doesn't often mess up, doesn't make you feel any better.
Don't tell me to grow up, and don't tell me to get a life. If you don't like the "person" I am, then join the club.

Can I join the club too, just on the basis of that awful analogy? We're talking some crunched Wonderswan games here, not people dying on the operating table.

Too late- I already did. Is "fuck them right up their asses" your usual answer to everything?

You're well on your way to creating a nice big "fan club", then.

If you do consistently/repeatedly get chopped up mail, inform your local PO- they'll be happy to help.
all im saying its false advertising - not anal probeing
yes - there is a high load of material passing though the postal services - if the organization can't keep up with the load, it's the organizations fault and should do something about it. Like lightening the load with a larger staff.
If they don't do anything about it then they shouldn't be allowed to advertize the way they do
I pay for a service - an advertized service - therfore i should recive that service. I shouldn't have to worry about the organizations problems. The only thing i should worry about as a customer is my package and that i get exactly what im paying for - no less and no more, and what im paying for is the advertized service.
I'm sure some areas have careful and well organized postal units. But where i live and i gues where the other disgrutaled customers here live the units are not so well. But i can not belive its directly related to where we live - the packages get messed up somewhere in between point A and B and thats a general fault.
I have complaied to the postal service - other member of my family have complained, my other collector friend, and we all recived the same response. "we dont guarantee packages are safely handeld - pack them better" - the only diference is that my firends wife had a im sorry with the line. and telling them that they cant advertize the way they do and not be responsable is just like talking to a wall.
that is all im trying to say - i have not talked about anal probing anything
I never said you did, & I never mentioned any names...
You know who you are. ;)

All submissions are welcome.

boy. i wish i got extra money to insure i did my job properly. tack that onto not delivering on sunday.
YOU FUCKING SHITS.
Dude, you're an asshole. I mean seriously, grow the hell up.
I've shipped hundreds upon hundreds of packages with hardley any problem, usually the problems that DO come up are the shippers fault anyways (not this time, not at all)...wrong addresses, no packaging material, etc.
I love the post office, if you have a problem with it, stop dealing with them. See how well you can handle things when you do that.
As for Sunday, let them have their day off a week, that's all they get! Do you know when the post office is CLOSED for holidays...they still come in...sorting mail? Do you know that they only get 3 holidays when they actually get the close the post office COMPLETELY?
Anyone complaining about the job that the post office does needs to learn some COMPASSION for their fellow man, learn that not everyone does everything right, and that they are human being just like you and me...and if I'm not mistaken, the old saying goes "To err is human"? Sorry there can't be 24/7 postal robots working there. Oh yeah...grow up. I don't think those 2 words have ever meant more than they do now.
