View Full Version : How do I hook up a 32X?
Help out an idiot...
Obviously the 32X goes into the cartridge slot of the Genesis. Then do I need 2 power supplies or just 1? Is there a special power supply for the 32X or can I use a Genesis 2 one?
And what about A/V cables? I assume the Genesis gets plugged into the TV normally, and then the 32X gets plugged into it... but with what? Do I need a special cable for that too?
Thanks

32X requires its own power supply so you will need 2 (one for genesis, one for 32X, also one more for Sega CD if you want to use Sega CD!)
The AV cable going to TV should come from the out port of the 32X. There should be a short cable that connects the out port from genesis to in port of the 32X.
I have the manual for setting up 32X but I keep forgetting to scan them in. I know I offered someone the scan months ago. O_O Maybe I should go now?

A full Sega 32x CD system is one big clusterfu*k of wires.
OK, I get how it hooks up now. Since my 32X didn't come with any hookups I just need to know if I can substitute anything for the 32X power supply and/or A/V cord.

You have entered the SOL zone. That cable that goes from the Genesis to the 32x is really hard to find on its own. Also If you are using a genesis model 1 you need an adapter too.

The power supply problem is simple, you need the same one made
for the Genesis model 2 or surprisingly the Game Gear. Thats 10 volts
DC 0.85 amps.
The cable that runs out of the Genesis AV port and in to the 32X
can found at Radio Shack look in computer cables
The original Genesis hook up can be a problem

Take your 32X to a hot 32X singles bar.

Anyway, here's the cable you need to connect a Genesis 1 to the 32X/genesis link cable.
http://secure-shopping-cart.com/serviceconcepts/cart/cart265.html
Here's what it takes to hook up a 32X:
Cable running from 32X to Genesis
A/V outs from 32X to TV
10V (yellow tip) DC adaptor (Genesis 2 style) to 32X
This is for using a Genesis 2 & 32X. If you want to hook it up to an older Genesis unit, you have to get an adaptor cable, like in the link. It changes the little plug on the 32X/Gen cable so it can fit the larger jack on the back of Genesis 1.
Best option? Get a complete system from eBay, or any number of online retailers. $20 will do it, and save you a lot of hassle.

I have never gotten my Geni2 and SCD2 and 32X to work together. :( They work individually, but can't get all 3 to work together so I can play those 3 games (or 4 I can't remember) that require all 3.

if you are hooking a 32x to a system 1 you need 2 f'ing connecters not 1.. One comes out the system 1 AV to a mini din plug (like on the back of a system 2) then the hard to find cable.. This is why I waited for this auction to get a 32x..

Because all the 32x's I found locally are like the Genesis' I find locally.. $30 more then what I can get online..

I had a similar problem that was resolved when I got a replacement Genesis deck.

Has the 32x to Gen2 cables, but they're expensive as hell. I'm sure you might be able to find one cheaper somewhere. They also have the conversion (32x to Gen1 cable) but those are $7. They are $2 or something like that at www.sega-parts.com.

Anyone know how necessary the "electromagnetic sheilds" are? The voltages should be on all my pages during the update.
The guy that Raedon (I think) and I bought some new 32x games awhile back still has 32x NIB:

Thanks everyone. I guess I'll just have to buy myself a new one. I bought the same games that you did (the lot of 5 NIB) and I still haven't been able to play any of them. :-(

It's there just to make someone at FCC happy. :P although some reported 32X was more stable with the plates installed than without. YMMV
Oh, the 32X will not work on Genesis 3. Genny 3 don't have Z-80 processor or other support compoments. 32X can work on CDX but the spacer was never made because FCC wasn't happy about the tiny cramped design of CDX and the close proximity of 32X hardware. Someone once reported Nomad also worked with 32X but I can't verify this. And I have no idea of X'Eye works or not.
And someone find a cattle prod! I forgot to scan in the damn 32X manual again! O_O

I forgot to tell you guys something: Neither 32X nor Sega CD will work with Majesco Genesis 2 units. Yes, I said 2. I bought a 2nd gen.2 when they were $20 at Wal Mart (a few years back), and tried to hook it up to the rest of my "rig". It didn't work at all, though it would work by itself. I thought it was odd (since my other Gen 2. worked with all components, and then I started looking all over the box. I noticed that it (a late model Gen. 2) was manufactured and licensed by Majesco. This was around the same time that Frogger appeared in stores (for SNES and Gen.), as well as other Majesco re-releases.
I think I actually opened the instruction manual to find out that it indeed would not work with Sega CD or 32X. Odd. Anyway, I remember noticing that the edge connector (which would attach to the Sega CD) seemed almost like it had a dark epoxy coating over it, as opposed to the green PCB/copper contacts look of all other Genesis edge connectors.
To make a long story short...if you can't get 32X or Sega CD to work with your Genesis 2, then check the manufacture date and the look of the edge connector. It's a good bet that it's a Majesco release. And it goes without asaying that the Genesis 3 works with neither as well, if for no other reason tan physical incompatibility (it's more, but that's just the start).

Majesco, quality, man. Quality.
The 32X though, she's one sexy beast. :D What's this about a 5-game lot and is it still available? Always looking to expand the 32X library.

Yeah. Nice thing about 32X collecting....you never have to worry about space concerns.

Based on the overall quality of the composite video output from a 32X, I'd put all the shielding in place. It needs all the help it can get.

Ok... I have the 4 pages of 32X manual scanned in. It's all in greyscale (there is no color in original anyway) and each is about 500K JPG. (I tried GIF, got 2MB each :o )
Anyone want them? You can post 'em on your web site if you want.
I also have the yellow addendum manual which is about half as long as the original that I haven't scanned in. It only covers both original Genesis and Genny 2 and has no other info like Sega CD or CDX.

Hey, don't kill me cause i'm uninformed but are there any games that require all three ( Gennesis,32x,SegaCD) to run? Also is the Saturn in anyway compatible with SegaCD? Just curious.

Corpse Killer CD
Farenheight CD
Night Trap CD
Slam City CD
Supreme Warrior CD
That's all. I only have Slam City (found it at Toys R Us for like $2 a few years ago) and I have *yet* to make it work. :P
And no, Saturn won't work.
