View Full Version : PSP NUMBERS
Ok, I was just checking out the latest game news and saw this story at GameSpot, here's what interested me:
The PSP was another success story for Sony. The company shipped 2.09 million units of the flashy handheld in North America and Japan
This is in the period from March 31st to June 30th
Now take a look at the numbers qouted here:
The Japanese giant unveiled the figures at the PlayStation Summit in Tokyo, revealing that 2.33 million units have been shipped to Japan and Asia, while 2.74 million have been sold to the US and Canada.
Those numbers don't seem to jive to me from both articles that were published within a week of each other.
PSP was launched only a couple days before the end of the quarter in the US. Have PSP sales been that white hot over the past 3 weeks and change? I would have expected Sony to be yelling that the war is over already if this is the case.
I also thought this was good:
The company's proprietary UMD movie format has done particularly well in North America, where 4.3 million units have shipped. This figure includes the 1 million copies of Spider-Man 2 which were given away with the first batch of PSP consoles.
Here are the links to the articles, someone explain, RCM is tired!

Do we REALLY have to start another thread where we debate the PSP's sales numbers?

Yes, yes. Mini-mod etc. etc.

This is a bit different than that mess of a thread. My hopes that this one will stay pure! Ha.

Where is this? I'd grab a DS in a minute if it was being sold for sixty clams. The nearby game store - can't remember if it's EB or Gamestop, they all look the same - is selling used DS for $119. I'm still waiting for fall when Nintendo goes Wi-Fi, when Mario Kart, Animal Crossing, and Advance Wars DS come out.
The PSP looks great, no doubt, but where are the cool games? It needs some quick arcade-style games for playing on the bus.

That there is no chance in hell any company would be stupid enough to sell the system at $60 used. GameSpot and EB Games are both backordered on the Electric Blue system, I really doubt their trying to push these things out the door.

Rochester, NY. I was in there today and saw the sign on the wall. Maybe I misread it, but I do not think I did.

Maybe they are paying $60 for a used DS.

There is some trade-in deal for an SP + 3 games, maybe after that it's $60.

Yeah, Preplayed DS is $60 after you trade in SP with 3 games or GBA witrh 5 games. Otherwise it's $119.
And I'll be honest, for having the shittiest / rehashed game library and not a single new game in 2 months, the PSP is being asked about everyday by customers. I think on Monday no less than 12 people, all in a row asked about it.
The poor DS just sits there and gets, "I don't get this, this game sucks" anytime anyone tries Pac-Pix and Polarium, which are two of my fave games so far for the deck. =/

Perfect example of the mindless masses at their best. It's too much to ask of people to actually, god forbid, use their brain while playing a video game.
If the PSP had some unique titles I would consider buying one. But I just can't justify paying $250+ for the whole setup when I can play pretty much the exact same games on PS2 on a bigger screen.

Are you talking about the fact that this thread is *already* derailed? :)
As to the topic at hand: the point is, as always, never trust numbers unless they come from an impartial third party. I wouldn't spend any time trying to figure this out if I were you.

ANY thread initially about the DS or the PSP will invariably turn into a DS vs PSP thread.

I think its interesting when companies use words like shipped as opposed to actual sell-through numbers.
As collectors and enthusiasts I would think here at DP most of us hope both systems do well. As we've all come to learn competition is a great thing and presents us with more variety and better deals/prices. I've never understood the whole one-sidedness that so often pops up and this is even after working closely with Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo for quite some time. Believe me their true colors are probably even more scarier than you could ever imagine yet their success/survival is integral to our hobby.

That's all that matters to the manufacturers. If they shipped, someone bought them from them. They don't give a shit whether they sold. Unless, of course, they start coming back, which hasn't happenned.
