I have one of the large PS2s. For some reason it plays "normal" PS2 games and movie DVDs fine. However I get "disc read error" when trying to play PS1 games, music CDs or the "blue" CD type PS2 games. Anyone know what the problem could be? Does this thing have two laser lens? Maybe an "adjustment" inside? I would probably be willing to sell this thing for $75 plus shipping if anyone is interested. Might take partial game/manual/boxes trade (but would need at least $50 cash plus the shipping cost)

Sounds like the CD laser has gone off. Replacement is probably needed.

I can probably fix that for you for about $35-$45US. I don't pay more than $20 for busted PS2's though. Shipped. LOL I have lots of parts.

Well Sony will replace it for me for $45. Not sure it is worth it to me though since it at least plays PS2 games and movies. I can play PSX games on my PS1 and don't care about music CDs. I heard there is some sort of adjustment inside (white dial?) could this help? Is there actually two lens assemblies, if I could try to fix CD lens without screwing up the DvD lens it might be worth a shot.

Take SONY up on their offer before it's not worth $20 (you start twisting dials and the like).

If it won't read music CD's, or PS1 CD's, it will not read any blue backed PS2 games either. It's broken. At least 5 common issues cause what you have there. I have no idea which it is without an inspection.

Good Luck!
