I won an auction on ebay and the seller emailed me if I was interested in this: Is this legit and he is selling it for $350?

His email:
I have this Sega Dreamcast developer system. This is what they gave to game companies to code the games on. Basically, it hooks up to your PC and you can code Dreamcast games with included software and then the games run off of the dreamcast. Very interesting indeed. I have a guide on how to get this working with your computer, and also have the software you need. This system was also once called sega 'katana' because it came out before dreamcast was released. See photos for some more details, note these are not actual photos of my unit, but it's exactly the same. Thanks!

It could be legit. eBay usually pulls stuff like that, so that could be why he is offering it outside eBay. If you want it for a collectable piece, it's definitely worth it -- although that seems to be their going price now. If you are ever thinking about developing though, don't bother.

And I don't think it can play anything the regular Dreamcast can't.

For that price though, I'd be interested if I had the cash. I used to have what I think was a revision 5, which was the early, early "Dreamcast" development system. That's the actual production one. The one I had was much rarer (only given out as a preview for a few big named developed), but worth less. I think I sold it for $150.00. $350.00 for the real deal... if you want it, it's a good deal :)

KallistiOS is a better development system... and if you ever plan on publishing anything, having a Dreamcast development system effectively makes it illegal to do so, while using KallistiOS is completely legal.

I couldn't publish a game made on a Dreamcast development kit without a looooooooot of trouble. There are tons of legal issues that go into it. Essentially, the DC Dev system gives you Sega's development tools, which are not freeware in an illegal way. Somewhere, there is an NDA that states that you can't sell that dev systems. It would be broken if you bought it -- however, Sega won't care unless you use their tools to try making money.

Does that make sense? I feel like I typed way more than I needed to, yet I still don't feel like I explained it very well.

http://sourceforge.net/projects/cadcdev/

And, some info about it:

http://gamedev.allusion.net/softprj/kos/

It was developed by the guys who ended up releasing Feet of Fury through us :) Awesome program, and I believe it has been adapted for a bunch of different systems now. I personally have never set it up though.
