View Full Version : Do you pocrastinate on beating a game because its so good?

Hey,
I was wondering if anybody else did the same thing as me.
Whenever I'm playing a really good game, and I know that I am nearing the end, I usually don't play the game as often as I usually do. Either that, or sometimes if I know I'm so close to getting to the final boss, what I'll do is try to complete all the side-tasks in the game just so I can make the game last longer.
The reason I do this, is because the game is literally so good that I don't want to beat it, because then I won't be able to play it anymore (in a matter of speaking... I could obviously play it again, but it wouldn't be the same).
Right now, I'm playing Wind Waker on the Gamecube. As soon as I started looking for the missing Triforce shards, I really slowed down my game play. I try to get 1 shard every couple of days just so I know that I can continue playing it for a while.
Am I the only freak who does this?

I was like that a period before. I thought "if I beat this game I'm done with it". But I still beat the games anyway. There is always new games comming so your not really missing much if you beat the game. I always play FPS games on the hardest level so I dont have to beat it twice also.
But if you feel like that, no problem. Do whatever you feel like.

Yup, I've done that. In fact, I played all the way through the game once but didn't ever fight the final boss because I didn't want the game to be over. Later I played through the game again and finished it, but it was a couple of years later.

i still haven't finished silent hill 4. i'm waiting to be back in the mood to play so it won't be cheapened by the wrong kind of atmosphere.

When I find a game that I really like, I'll sit back and smell every rose along the way. So, I differ from the others because once I reach the ending, I feel like it's the right time.
I also like when the challenge dictates play time; that's really cool. It means I can play the game like I did as a kid, trying to rush through, but not being able to.

I actually did this with morrowind. And while wandering is almost encouraged, I could have beaten it at that point. But instead, I wandered around talking to people, getting stronger etc. I actually ended up sneaking down to our computer and playing it late into the morning somedays. Good times.

I'm doing the exact thing you are with Wind Waker. I'm running around doing side things, and playing more MVP 2005 instead of actually going and getting the shards.
Mario 64 probably took 5 times longer for me to beat than if I had just beaten it, but NO... I had to make sure I had ALL of the stars first. :)

Yup. It took me a year to be Headhunter because I just didn't want it to end. When I heard that Headhunter: Redemption was coming out, I finally decided that it was time to beat it :)
Grandia II falls into this category too, but I can't get my disc to work in my Dreamcast all of a sudden, so I have an excuse ;)

god of war for me right now...just don't want to see what type of crazy stuff that's in store.
but I'll beat it before the year's end
I did this when playing Ocarina of Time, I was nearing the last temples and just totaly stopped playing for like 6 months, I almost cryed during the Credits :(
At least I won't have that problem with Twilight Princess since it will be uber long

No, I do just the opposite. If I like a game, I will blow through it as fast as possible. Both MGS2 and MGS3 had me up until 4am a few times. I finished MGS2 the day it came out, and MGS3 the day after.

I do this. I also played Zelda: WW right up til then end, then let it sit for months.
Currently not playing because of this reason: Final Fantasy X, KOTOR, .hack//quarentine, Fire Emblem

Of all the games in the world, why are you guys doing this with WW? The ending is so good... It pains me to hear that you don't want to see it.

I don't tend to this with games so much as I do it with anime series. I've taken years to finish watching series that I couid have watched in a matter of days. For an immediate example, I have every DVD of Infinite Ryvius, and they have been sitting on my shelf for months. I've watched the first three or four discs, but I can't bring myself to finish it. I just love it so much!

Its killing me now... I think I'm going to go find some more shards.
I could see how the ending is going to be good... the part underwater (very unspecific because I didn't want to spoil anything) blew me away.

Yeah there are quite a few games like that for me, they are so good that you want to kind of "stall" the ending as long as you can.
Shenmue(DC), I do this with every play through I love just taking my time and doing as much as I can before the final battle(s).
Shenmue 2(DC), I've been stalling this forever, but I just don't want to see the ending as everyone says it really leaves you hanging. LOL
Super Mario 64DS(do I really need to say it?), I've been stalling getting the last few stars for a long time now. Why? Because it's my favorite DS game and once I hit the 150 mark there isn't much else to do.
Jet Grind Radio(DC), I'm always sad when it ends, but I can just play again and get a better score. :)

If I was you I would wait untill Shenmue 3 comes out so you can have something to fall back on when you beat Shenmue II, I hate beating a game and waiting 4+ years for a sequel

If I LOVE a game, I tend to play it non-stop until I beat it. Then when I beat it my other games suck because they're not nearly as good. :( Life goes on and sooner or later another kick-a$$ game comes along. :D
LOL LOL
Okay...how's THIS for dumb? I've had Wind Waker since it came out......and have two guides for it.....and I haven't PLAYED it yet for fear that it will end!!! (sorta half true....I'm waiting for a time when I can sit down and savor the game, since Ocarina was damned near a religious experience.)
When I first played FF7 I ended up with a game file of 120 hours and didn't do EVERYTHING. I recently bought another copy...and this time I want an even longer completion time.
My first run through the "normal" Morrowind took 2 years. Now I've started the Game Of The Year edition. I'm going faster since I don't have to discover the whys and wherefores this time around.

I have been playing Adventures of Link for 14 years and still have not beaten it. But I usually play more than usual when I can feel the end near. For example I have been playing Grandia 2 everyday because I am excited to get to the end and see what will happen.

Yea I have done this on a few occasions. When I was playing Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, I took my sweet time to see every possible thing in the game.

I have never let the game sit to beat it some other time, or because I thought that it was to good to end. What I do is go through the game and beat it, then I go through the game and try to complete it in some cases like Final Fantisy (anyone), I have beat the game a couple of times and found that I have never been able to get something, (FF7 tika's max limit break) and went out and bught the stragity guide so that I could find it.

Half-Life 2, for a while...
Ninja Gaiden is still sitting on top of my xbox. Every time I play that game, I go into a hypnotic state. Now, I cant beat it until Ninja Gaiden Black, with the new content and missions comes out.

I could probably almost guess it (don't tell me if I'm right... don't say anything)... But what; Is the character Link's son or something? Does a sage turn out to be Link? Is the character's sister Zelda? Zelda's daugther? Zelda has something to do with it I'm sure... I think I saw her in the prison. AHRSKRYHSJR!!!

Exact opposite. If i like a game so much it will be beat within the week (except for maybe RPGs... but i dont even play them :))
GTA san andreas? beat in 3 days
Resident evil 4? beat in 3 days
these are really the only 2 that have caught my attention like this in the last year but hey, fun :)

If I really like a game I'll just replay it as soon as I beat it the first time.I did this with Jade Empire.Of course some games like the Baldur's Gate DA series and Dungeons and Dragons Heroes let you replay with a powered up hero. These types of games I play endlessly just to try and see how powerful I can make my character.

Yes. I haven't beaten Klonoa: Door to Phantomile or Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus yet for this exact reason. Hell, I haven't even started X-Wing: Alliance yet, even though I've had it for years, because when I finish it I'll be shit out of classic LucasArts Totally Games Star Wars combat flight sims. And there is no hope for any more sequels. :(

Yep. Infact its not only games for me. I didn't watch the last episode of Evangelion for over 2 years because I liked it so much and didn't want it to end.

I remember I had a friend in High School who just wouldn't (and still hasn't, AFAIK) beat Final Fantasy 7, because he couldn't bear the game being over.
He had all characters at level 99, he had defeated both Ruby & Emerald Weapon, etc...., but just wouldn't go past that final save point.

I'm notorious for taking far longer to complete an RPG than just about anyone else. I'm obsessive about doing everything, and the longer I play a game, the more I get attached to it and don't want it to end. It feels awkward to just be DONE, and it's even made me feel depressed at times. The really odd thing is that it doesn't even have to be a game I like. I put about 100 hours into Final Fantasy 7, and even though I don't like it much at all, it felt wrong to stop playing it. Of course, the feeling generally goes away rather quickly and I move on.

I stop playing something because either it's too hard and I'm stuck somewhere, or something else catches my eye [like a new purchase] and I do that instead.
