View Full Version : My First Milestone

Daria

I have yet to finalize either of my current goals for a complete PSX or Genny RPG collection but I did stumble over a nice milestone today. Riviera is offically my 250th RPG. *happy dance* My collection is hardly impressive in bulk, but considering I collect a fairly expensive and competitive genre I'm pretty damn skippy over the whole thing.

And lets please refrain from the "X game isn't an RPG!" posts. My personal definition is fairly broad and some games I include to maintain "sets". Such as the CDi Zeldas.

My not-quite-updated photos can be found here:

Very impressive collection indeed, and a great game to be your 250th RPG. I see you still need suikoden II. How do you plan on going about getting that one, ebay and paying over $100 or trading, or waiting for a find in the wild?

Well I intended for Suikoden II to to be the very last PSX game I buy. Unless of course I stumble across it in the wild. I'll try and pay no more then $100 for it though. If you think of it in terms of being the price of two new games it doesn't seem all that bad.

RPGs are great because you can get the most resale value for them..... oh ya, and they're fun as hell to! :)

Star ocean (PSX) is one of my favorites on that list (other than Faxanadu)

Collect? No. I play other genres too though, I enjoy survival horror and point and clicks. And there are plenty of games I enjoy but I don't feel the need to buy everything I see.

And lets please refrain from the "X game isn't an RPG!" posts. My personal definition is fairly broad and some games I include to maintain "sets". Such as the CDi Zeldas.

I'm not going to question your definiton, but I am curious to hear it. For the most part I didn't see anything that bad in the list, though there were one of two I was really scratching my head with. So if you wouldn't mind I'd like to know :)

I have long defined Fester's Quest as an RPG too, although I feel it would be the first one scrutinized on the list. Simple reasons, there is no save, no password, and the character gets multiple lives.

I've been looking forward to posting milestone #2, the 500 RPG topic for the last 3 years, maybe in 2009!

458 and counting. :P

I could broaden my opportunities for collecting if I bought Japanese titles. But ultimately I have no interest in games I can't play. I've tried, the language barrier detracts too much from the experience for me. I'm financially fuck if I ever learn Japanese. XD

As it stands I'm only buying RPGs in English, regardless of Region. And PC titles are out (I own a few but don't consider them part of the collection) because it's way too difficult to set up a single machine to run them reliably.

That and I'm a terrible PC pirate, although not lately because my machine can't run anything new, and what I would play gets released on console.

I must say you're the most insane girl collector i've ever seen. I wonder if i had girlfriend like you.. lol. I mean. We collect same things. Should we collect ONE collection or seperate ones? lol. We could save a lot of money. :)

Congrats.

According to my spreadsheet, I have 211 RPGs.

My definition of RPGs is a bit different. For example, I don't categorize Zelda games or Shenmue as RPGs. However, I do include tactical wargames like Advance Wars, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, and such under the RPG heading for the purposes of my list. So it really all evens out.

My definition is softening a bit though since I completed Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin. I really can't see any way to say that one isn't an RPG anymore.

You don't have Dark Wizard for the Sega CD on your list. I'm a big evangelist for the game and I really think any RPG fan with a Sega CD needs that one. Hunt it down.

Nice Shadow Hearts set, and you even have Koudelka. I wish I had snapped those up when I had a chance. My best friend really likes the third Shadow Hearts game, and he usually has decent enough taste. You should finish the set.

I must admit I find it somewhat comforting that even you don't have Pool of Radiance or Warriors of Destiny for the NES. While I've seen listings of the games, I've never seen a real copy of either, and my attempts to order a copy always result in replies of "oh, we don't have that anymore."

You have Digimon but no Monster Rancher? For shame! Try and find a copy of Monster Rancher 2 for the PS1 or one of the GBA installments.

Nice catch on Culdcept, btw. You might also be interested in Yu-Gi-Oh: Duelists of the Roses. I picked it up for $5 on a whim and was pleasantly surprised by it.

I'd also like to suggest getting Eternal Poison. Ar Tonelico 2 comes out in the next week as well.

I'd never sell any of my RPG collection, but I must admit it gives me the warm fuzzies that they're the games which typically have the highest resale value. They're so often ignored when they're new but they're top of the charts for people returning to play years later, emphasizing their longevity and merit.

Impressed,
you gonna try some first half 80s RPGs?
VCS, Intellivision, Vectrex, O2

The Intellivision D&D games are on my current want lists. Thing is I don't have any experience with pre-crash systems save Atari 2600.

But I love vintage games and packaging. So certainly something I'd interested in eventually expanding into. They'd also be oddities in my library because as far as I know there aren't really any true RPGs made for them. But I'd like to pick out games that would represent the roots of the genre, kind of like how Adventure is a gauntlet type. Or how D&D adventure resembles early Ultima titles. I'd like to explore what early console gaming took from the Pen and Paper influence before there was any preconceived standard of what made an RPG.

Someday I'd also love to expand into Commodore 64. And touch upon the early PC influence but that's a long ways off. I like to keep exploring new markets because it's fun to discover "new" gems. It's boring when you know everything that's available. But then again titles still pop up every now and then for me. Like today, I was glancing through Dark_Sol's list and spotted Ax Battler. Always assumed it was another Golden Ax Beat-em-up.

Research is just as much fun as the hunt.

Well... that list is missing 200 titles. :P

I thought it looked short. :P It takes me a while to wake up on Saturday.

I take it you don't have Xenosaga III because you're holding out for the lenticular cover version?

Oh, and my deep sympathies on owning Battle Hunter and Kartia. :P

I like reading lists like this, because every once in a while I learn about a title I had never known existed. In this case, I had never heard of Torneko: The Last Hope or Tsugunai: Atonement.

Yes, RPG on a computer is a must, especially the early stuff. Number 1 computer should be Apple ][, boasting loads of excellent RPG titles, especially in the USA, second try C64, a close follower when it comes to RPG (The Magic Candle, RPG heaven), and not forgetting A8, unfortunally not as much RPGs as Apple ][ or C64, but still worth keeping in mind.

Actually I don't like the Xenosaga games (Gears is cool), probably just haven't seen it for the right price.
