I've seen them in stores. I've seen them advertised on TV. What is the picture quality like?

I don't have a PSP yet. Does the PSP make a decent portable video machine?

Has anyone read of any DVD player manufactures' making players capable of playing movies released on PSP discs?

Thanks for the info. Now for a follow-up question. What's the battery drain situation? Can you get through a long movie on one recharge?

I was able to get through Spider-Man 2 on one Battery Charge, you shouldn't have a problem running any other movie.

As for the quality, I think it is excellent, almost as good as watching a DVD.

Thanks. I just might have to get a PSP then. I've seen GBA video cartridges, but they're limited to things like "SpongeBob Squarepants." I've never tried one, for some reason. :D

I actually think the UMD picture quality is BETTER then on DVD -- maybe due to the plasma screen of the PSP?

The sound is a little low, though. For Spider-Man 2 with headphones, I had to have it ALL the way up and that was just normal level.

Personaly I don't like the idea of the DVD on the PSP. I dont like how you have to buy new DVD's to watch. That isnt such a big problem, what is a big problem is that they cost almost the same as a normal DVD, and if you forget to fully charge it then most likley the PSP will go dead before the movie ends. as to quality it surpases a T.V (unless you have a plasma)

I just read in The Official PlayStation Magazine that there are two things currently happening in Japan. 1) Very little game software is coming out there for the PSP. The Nintendo DS is killing it game wise. However, 2) Japanese home video companies have begun releasing quite alot of porn in the UMD format. Porn, uh, for your, uh, hand. :-P

I'd say just buy a 1gig MSDuo. You can easily convert all of your DVDs to PSP-compatible video. The current quality is damn fine, and the newer firmware (out in Japan, coming soon in N.A.) includes the ability to play even higher quality video from a MSDuo. Nothing wrong with UMD movies or anything, but if you'd like to save a few (or several hundred) bucks go the MSDuo route. Perhaps most importantly, you'll be saving battery-power by playing video off the stick as opposed to accessing the UMD drive. :)

If you want it for movies just get a Microsoft Portable Media Center. You can store 20 gigs of movies in it's hard drive. It has longer use of the battery than the PSP and it can also play mp3's and pictures.

On my psp, the UMD video quality is awesome. The battery life is less than stellar. If your power bar on the PSP is down to two bars (it has a total of three bars), you probably won't get through a full length UMD movie.

But yeah, it looks great, no doubt about it.

Now you're just talking apples and oranges. Nobody is claiming the PSP to be the best portable video device. But if you're addicted to Lumineres (which at last count was only on the PSP), you might as well make use of the multimedia functions of the handheld you're playing it on.

Personally I never understood why so many people would be willing to pay more for the UMD verison than of a DVD that they already own, that has less or no of the features found on the original... just to watch "in transit". I mean... if people are going to spend XXX just for the PSP to watch them, why not get a cheap-o laptop and watch the DVDs on that?

Anyone else find is somewhat lackluster that the PSP has 10 times the number of movies for it than actual games?

I agree, but if movies is the only reason he wants it then the Microsoft PMC is the best choice.

The UMD quality is excellent. However, If you are buying the PSP just for movies, then I would have to recommend that you instead buy a low priced laptop or portable dvd player. If you want the psp for all the functionality and media, and you don't have much dvds then go ahead and buy the psp. If you have a lot of dvds then I don't think it is worth it to buy all the extra UMDs, which are like $20 a piece.
