So what are these games all about? I've never played any of them and i'm interested. And what's the best version, snes or genesis?

Lemmings is a great game!

It's a puzzle type game. Lemmings drop out of a 'door' and mindlessly walk in one direction.

It is your job to get them to the exit door by assigning different skills to the lemmings, example:

you can turn a lemming into a 'blocker', when the other lemming walk up to him, they turn around and walk mindlessly in the other direction.

I have not actually played the SNES or Genesis, but I think the game would work best with a mouse.

It was made by the now defunct [merged actually] Psynosis.

They also made titles like Colony Wars, G Police, things like that.

If you have a SNES and a mouse it's a blast, otherwise you may want to find it for the PC since selecting and controlling the lemmings can be frustrating with a standard controller. Excellent puzzle game however that has spawned many clones and sequels.

Krustys super funhouse is kinda the same deal too and maybe chuchu rocket?

I dunno what the category is called but those games seem to fit.

Oh and Dino dudes for Jaguar ahahah......seriously dont play that one though.

I have the genesis version, and it is a blast to play.

It was never too hard for me to control it with just a standard controller, but I can only imagine that plying it on the PC is perfect.

Its just the point of having multiple options on how to guide your lemmings to the goal is what gives this game an open ended goodness to it.

Lemmings is a great game!

give it a try here, although this version slows down a lot when you have 100 lemmings on the screen.

Nope, Lemmings was made by DMA Design aka the company that never got the credit they deserved, it is allways the publishers that gets rememberd for their games.

DMA has also made Blood Money, Uniracers, Space Station Silicon Valley, the Grand Theft Auto series, amongst others. Today they are known as Rockstar North.

Here is a thread about the history of DMA Design. (http://www.digitpress.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=53191)

Dude...

The SNES version was released YEARS before the mouse came into play. Therefore, it is not compatible with the mouse. It helps if you've, you know, played the game before forming an opinion on it, much less sharing that opinion, even more so when you're making a recommendation to someone else.

Now, to AlexKidd - Having actually played the SNES, NES, and PC versions (though only played the PC version once way back in the day), I actually know what I'm talking about.

I'd have to put them in this order - SNES, NES, PC. The PC version isn't that bad, but it's old, and getting old PC games to run can be a major chore.

The whole "mouse" issue doesn't matter too much, since the game controls fine with a control pad - better than you'd think. The action isn't as fast paced as other, newer games - think of ChuChu Rocket on the "slowdown" mode, and that's roughly the speed of play.

The SNES has better music than the PC version, or the Nintendo version, and the graphics are slightly nicer.

What's wrong with you? How about actually contributing something instead of attacking someone else? Oh wait, it looks like you did, but by the time I got through with your scolding I had no respect left for you or your opinions.

The mere thought of preferring to control a game like Lemmings with a controller instead of a mouse is absurd. Obviously you only played the PC game once, because not only do the PC games (which are still available and run fine on modern computers) look better than they do on the 16 bit platforms, you can point and click the lemmings you want at least 3 times as fast as you can holding down-right on a d-pad.

Lemmings is a great game!

First Lemmings game I played was "Oh no, more Lemmings!" when I first got my pc. Enjoyed the series since.

Wonder if we can get a Lemmings game in the Arcade?

Bah, Lemmings should of course only be played on Amiga, the platform where it originated ;D Here's a nice collection of different platform screenshots for comparison btw: http://hol.abime.net/872/conversionshot

There was in fact a prototype Lemmings arcade game that made it into MAME a while back.

Anyway, it was indeed all classic stuff. There were quite a few Lemmings games released in the end (the most recent being Lemmings Revolution), as well as quite a few knockoffs, including Krusty's Super Fun House, Baldies, The Humans, Creepers, and so on.

I imagine the SNES version would be preferable over the Genesis version, given the larger color palette. Lemmings 2 was also released on the SNES; it did in fact have mouse support, although I recall reading that the joypad was preferable.

Can anybody comment on the 3DO or CDI versions? How about the portables? Is it really that playable on Lynx, GG, GB or GBC?

When you go off on someone for not doing their homework, it helps to have done your own.

Yikes.

Shoes23 might be referring to the SNES port of Lemmings 2, which did indeed utilize the SNES mouse.

Also, the SNES port of Lemmings 1 was released in North America only a few months (not years) before Mario Paint (and therefore the SNES mouse). It's easy to see why he made that mistake. Lemmings was released in March of 1992, and Mario Paint saw its first release in August or September of that year.

On that note...I reccomend Lemmings for the SNES, as the control scheme was tweaked to utilize the SNES pad so much that it's just as easy to play without a mouse.

omg! get an Amiga emulator and a disk image and forget about a weekend. Unless you are a puzzle god you will get stuck but Lemmings has a way of drawing you back until you finish.

Ya beat me too it. Lemmings, much like Test Drive, was best on the Amiga.

I'll throw in another recommendation for the SNES version. Great music, excellent graphics, and it doesn't suffer at all from the lack of mouse support. It also has some bonus "Sunsoft" levels that are hard as hell.

I beg to differ. I've had some really problems with trying to move the pointer quickly to the spot i want it to go. By no means is too difficult to use, but when things get a little frantic it can be a real pain in the arse.

I've been playing Lemmings these last couple of weeks on the 3DO and the Lynx, both are great ports. I think the other portables are a little lacking with this game but the Lynx is a fun version.

The Lynx version is fairly rare but you can check out the Lynx version in emulation and the 3DO version is easy enough to download and burn if you can't find a copy (not rare).

Sorry! I have Lemmings: Tribes (which is the only reason I went out and bought the SNES Mouse) and I just assumed that the first one was also mouse compatible.

KJN is right on about how awesome DMA Design is. If you're down with Lemmings, you need to check out Space Station Silicon Valley for the N64. Awesome puzzle-ish game, highly underrated.

A very awesome puzzle game. I recommend you pick this up right away!!! Time will fly by without you even knowing. Do yourself a favor and pick this game up. I have the SNES version and PC version and they both rock! :rocker:
