God, I can't decide. I love the Rushing Beat trilogy (Rival Turf, Brawl Brothers, and The Peace Keepers), with the third game being the best....but then I also love Final Fight, Alien vs Predator (Capcom) (easy, but fun!), River City Ransom, Die Hard Arcade, and Guardian Heroes...ugh...

Screw it, I'll go with Guardian Heroes for its branching paths, experience system, replayability, multiplayer, and giant fucking skeleton warrior.

On a related tangent, i strongly recommend checking out Minority Report for PS2/GC/XBOX..it's a pretty enjoyable beat 'em up :(

Battletoads and Double Dragon on the NES (not the SNES... I don't like that version) is probably my favorite.

I can't quite remember what the exact name is, but I always had a really good time with that 4-player Simpsons beat-'em-up.

Also, there is an arcade near my house that has a 4-player X-men beat-'em-up. Good times, good times.

Lastly, I am gonna go with Turtles in Time for the SNES. It RAWKZ0RZ!

This thread has been done a hundred times over.

Never can remember my answer, but I'd probably go Sengoku 3 on the Geo. Wonderful combo system at work there.

Cadillacs and Dinosaurs, Violent Storm, Vendetta, and AvP are up there too.

Wait a minute, I've been neglecting to buy Rival Turf all this time because I thought it was a soccer (football) game... ROFL

Well, now that I know it's a beat em up I definately have to get it.

BTW, my vote goes for The Simpsons, the arcade only beat em up by Konami. Damn I wan't a home port of this game so badly!

I loved the graphical style of Konami's beat em ups (the Simpsons still looks impressive), but I hated the gameplay. The bosses had too many hitpoints and the games (in general...TMNT/Crime Fighters/Simpsons/etc) just seemed to lack any sort of balance. It was like they were designed from the ground up to suck in your money and that's it.

Capcom, Sega, and Jaleco efforts were much better balanced and just seemed more fair to the player (not easier, per se...just not nearly as cheap)

Golden Axe II Revenge of Death Adder was the finest Beat em up ever made in my opinion.
Capcom's great beat em ups are worth mention too: AVP, D&D Shadows over Mystarria, Knights of the Round, Punisher, Final Fight, Armored Warriors and King of Dragons to name a few. I spent an immense amount of quarters on those while they were in the arcade. :D

Can't believe no one's mentioned Double Dragon yet, that's the game that really seemed to popularize the beat em up genre.

I liked a lot of the older ones like Golden Axe (Arcade), Bad Dudes (Arcade), Renegade (NES), Motorhead (Amiga), and Altered Beast.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Hyperstone Heist is my favorite by far. Probably because this was one of my favorite games as a young child.

There are many excellent beat 'em ups. Some of my favorites are:

1. Sengoku 3 (Neo Geo)
2. Double Dragon 2 (NES)
3. Return of Double Dragon (Super Famicom; better than the U.S. version named Super Double Dragon)
4. Golden Axe: Revenge of Death Adder (arcade)
5. Battletoads (arcade; this is a completely different game from the console versions)

There are so many others...

Final Fight 3. I play that so much nowadays...the only reason I like it better than Streets of Rage is because I played the series before I was even introduced to the Streets of Rage series. That doesn't mean I don't like SoR though. :D

I don't think I'm alone here when I say Streets of Rage 2 or Hyperstone Heist.

Hyperstone Heist.

Why are you picking this over Turtles in Time? You're the second one, and I'm surprised to be honest. Less levels, drab color, scaling effect absent, and why in the hell can the WALK ON WATER???

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time on the SNES. Man, I can't get enough of that game! I really like all the Turtles games....but T.M.N.T IV is my favorite.

Other beat em ups I like...The Simpsons (arcade), Final Fight (SNES & Arcade), Double Dragon (NES), Golden Axe (Genesis). And Battletoads (the arcade game)...which is seriously one of the best beat em ups out there.

-kicks jdc through a flickering pile of barrels- bleh!

there was actually a simpsons console port....THE MIGHTY C64. that system has the most beat 'em ups to grace any console so far..and it makes no sense as to why such a feeble presentation was given there, but never repeated with 99% of those exclusive titles to something like the snes/gen.

It obviously Guardian Heroes guys...come on!?! LOL GH is truly one of the all-time great games ever created. I can still pop that mofo in and play it to this day.

Runners up:

Final Fight
Golden Axe II

What a great class of gaming though, beat em ups are always a good time. :)

It's hard to pick just one... this was my favorite genre back in the days of Genesis/SNES.

Probably my overall favorite is Streets of Rage, but I also really like Golden Axe and Final Fight.

This topic has been done SO many times before.

I refer you to the original, which you can feel free to add your comments to.

It's important that we keep just ONE topic of this nature "alive" rather than continue to open new threads about it. This way, we can always refer people to a single place and they can continue to grow a "classic discussion" for as long as we have a website here.
