My favorite was number 2 because there was no complicated storyline (yes im talkin to you Metal gear solid) and pure all out action.

Hmm... there seems to be alot of talk about the Streets of Rage games since it was stated that Sonic Gems may be released with the Streets of Rage trilogy.
Streets of Rage 2 is by far the best. Max all the way.

Two.
The original has to hold some kind of record for how many sprites, especillay of that size, it can handle on screen without slowing down at all.
The sequel just played better. Collision was better, graphics were phenomanal, and Yuzo's music was incredible. It was such an improvement, it wins on that alone.
Never could figure out what happened to three. Ugh. And you didn't even get homo guy in the US and Axel's shirt is piss yellow. Huh?

2 by far.. though 3 had an excellent soundtrack.

Easily SOR 2. IMHO, the best beat-em-up game of all time.
It's the reason I initially bought my Genesis..

It's a real toss-up for me. SoR 1 had more memorable tunes and stages, but SoR 2 had far better graphics and controls. I'll give the nod to the original, barely.

My vote goes for SoR2. Truly one of the defining examples of what a beat-em-up should be. I always get a blast out of many points in the game, especially the "great elevator melee" in level 7. It's much fun with one or two players, and although seemingly easy by its default settings, it can be customized to give you less lives and more enemies. Sega made a various blend of enemies that you love to hate (such as those freaking biker pricks and those ninja assholes), and the four protagonists all rule in their own fashions. Axel's my man all the way, though I like to kick ass with Max every now and then. :D
SoR1 gets the honorable mention for setting the bar for BEU's on the Genny. It's difficulty is also more challenging than SoR2 (though not in an unfair way), and despite the fact that it looks out of date in comparison to its sequels, that's just nostalgia to me. It does have an edge over its successor in stage design, as you couldn't throw bad guys into pits or coax them into being squashed by conveyor belts in SoR2. Plus, this game is the only playable appearance of Adam, who rules a lot, though Axel's still my boy. The bosses can be needlessly frustrating at times, and the special "ESWAT Assist" attacks felt a bit tacked on, but the original is still a great outlet for virtual aggression.
SoR3 went wrong in many areas... Max was traded in favor of the rather less interesting Dr. Zan, the music (also still good by my book) was a different and not-as-well-received style than the first two, and the mechanics just felt a little more awkward somehow to me in comparison to SoR2 (and I'm not sure why, honestly). Despite those flaws, the Japanese version was pretty good, but the American version made things worse by omitting Ash (the aforementioned "homo guy"), screwing with the colors of Axel, Blaze, and Skate, altering the conventional names of most of the baddies, and fucking up the difficulty to the point where the game's not even fun to play. I often don't make it a point to bitch about how the challenge ruins the gameplay, but it's seriously uncool here, and the insult to the injury is the more balanced difficulty in the Japanese version when compared to its American counterpart. WHY, SEGA OF AMERICA??!?
... ahem. I kinda got sidetracked there, but this is why SoR3 scores lower than SoR1 by my perspectives. However, no Sega BEU is ever touching SoR2 at its lofty position at number one. :)

I enjoy the entire trilogy. 1 has great tunes, 2 has good tunes and tighter gameplay, & 3 (well, Bare Knuckle 3) refined the control found in 2 and still manages to have some good tunes in it.
I'll give my overall nod to SOR2 because I do tend to play it more and its the one game i end up comparing all other beat 'em up's to.
But i do enjoy whooping Yamato's ass in BK3....that guy(s) is so easy to beat up!

Im going to have to give it to 2.
Imo, it had the most "Arcadey" experience.

Streets of Rage 1. It had the best tunes on the Mega Drive at the time - possibly the best soundtrack, full stop. The sprites were small and relatively poorly-animated, but it was a solid fighter.
The sequel gets the prize for the 'duel' mode, where I could whup all my friends (). But, I miss the 'Team Attacks', the bottle weapons, and the bazooka special attack.
Streets of Rage 3 just isn't up to any of the standards set by the previous games. Poor muic, poor gameplay, a butchered plotline, ugh. Wins a few points for alternative routes and unlockables, however.

I'll go with 2 as well, by a hair. I think the music in the original SoR is the best of the series, and the elevator level where you have a tight space to fight in and can chuck guys over the edge is the best level in the series... but SoR2 overall is best, with the same great mechanics but much better graphics and some vertical movement. I like SoR3 as well, but it is ludicrously difficult near the end, and the characters aren't nearly as much fun as the first two games.

Defintley Streets of Rage II for me. One of my favourite games ever. The 'call for help' on Streets of Rage (the orginal) is a bit silly and I thought Streets of Rage 3 was a bit dissapointing.. So II it is!

2 for me. Everything just seemed right with it that there were no ridiclous characters and the music and control was tight.

I'm voting for 2 along with most people so far. I like the whole series, even 3 was pretty good. 2 had my favorite character though , the little guy with the rollerskates. I have good good memories of the first one as well but 2 wins by a little bit.

Damn.....count another one for SOR 2. I am also a big fan of SOR 3 though; I think if Max was in this one as well, I may have even picked it over SOR 2 (or at least thought about it a little longer). I am a huge, huge fan of both games though. I also dig the original, but not as much as the two sequels.
I would also love to try Bare Knuckle 3, just to see what I've been missing all of these years......

Yes, I'm bringing the SOR thread back from the dead because...
Believe it or not, I don't think I ever played anything from the Streets of Rage series. I was a big SNES guy (my brother had the Genny). I'm going to have to go download the original on my Wii tonight :) Has anyone heard word about VC ports of 2 or 3?

number 2 although it was taking a lot of content from the first one with many almost identical settings. but it had more moves, better graphics and a kick ass sound track. gotta luv the last stage of sor 1 though :D

I voted for SOR 3 but I was really trying to vote for Bare Knuckle III, as others have stated on this topic that the JPN version is much more balanced and playable than the US/EU versions. On top of that all the censored changes to the US/EU versions just made SOR 3 much worse than BK III.

I voted in Streets of Rage 2, because his graphics and fun factor increased in comparsion with 1st version.
I had my Streets of Rage 2 original catridge.

I voted SoR 2 since it was a step up from the 1st and I have never played the 3rd installment.
