How do you like the Gameboy Player for Gamecube? I love the one that I have, but my wife thinks that I am spending too much on it LOL . It's great to be able to play some old NES games, without having to unhook the Gamecube.

I got mine for $39.00(I think that was the price) on E-Bay, and have been bargan hunting for the games. Like the other day here, I bought 9 of the Classics NES series games for $45.00 shipped. They arrived in complete mint condition.

Does the Gameboy Player for the GC support black and white GB games? Color GB games? What about the often forgotten Super Gameboy games, can it play them with their "Super Gameboy" enhancements such as added colors, borders, etc?
As far as I know, there is no unified Gameboy player, which supports every gameboy game with all of its features. This is mainly because Super Gameboy games included features specific to the Super Gameboy, which were "lost" when Nintendo upgraded to the Gameboy Color. They have remained "lost" with the GBA, GBASP, etc.
In short, don't throw away your Super Gameboy or Super Gameboy 2, if you were lucky enough to get the latter.

That is a great deal, if it comes with the disk. The one that I bought came with everything but the packaging.

I got one and love it. Spend more time playing GB/GBC/GBA games on the thing than Cube games. Excellent peripheral.

No SGB support in the GBP unfortunately. Only reason I can see that it's never been added to anything is it might have used something inside the SNES itself.

Yea, the SNES handled the borders and the extra colors. I wish the GBplayer let you pick your colors for the classic GB games like the SGB did though.

I just got mine a couple weeks ago. I traded my lynx for it and don't regret it. I like playing all the Castlevania games on it. I also like that I can play Contra 3(snes), Super Mario Bros.(nes), Phantasy Star(sms) and Phantasy Star 2(genesis) without having any of those systems hooked up.

Just a few days ago I was thinking of buying one. They seem pretty cool.
The only reason I would get one is because I don't really like playing long games on a handheld. I don't mind playing the odd game of Super Mario Bros. on my GBA, but I want to start playing The Legend of Zelda: Minish Cap.
I think I remember Wal-Mart dropping having a sale of these for $49.99 new a while back. I guess I should have picked one up.
I bought one when it came out......but then my GBA sat collecting dust, so I got rid of the Player. It was cool to be able to play on the TV though. Especially the RPGs and racers. I remember the racers becoming too easy once you had the control of the Cube and could see the screen though.

The only thing I know is that Metroid 2 looks different on my SP than on my Super Game Boy.
The enhancements include nice artful colored borders, actual colored graphics, multiplayer on the same screen via multiple SNES controllers, enhanced sound, enhanced speed, etc. The sad thing is that even the features such as color graphics are lost when playing on a GBC or GBA. Apparently the GC Gameboy Player has the same restrictions as a GBA. Some SGB games go even further and actually have SNES machine code embedded in them, but these are very few and far between. It would still be nice to see a Gameboy Player 2 for the GameCube that supported all of the other Super Gameboy Enhancements.
Here is a list of games that have enhancements. See section 4:
http://db.gamefaqs.com/console/snes/file/super_game_boy_a.txt
If you want a more detailed description of some of the enhancements in some of the SGB games, check out section 7 of this document:

...and this thread

The best games that had worthwhile enhancements were the original Pokemon games, which were actually in color when played on a SGB, yet black and white even when played on a Gameboy Color. Hence most people were introduced to the Pokemons in black-n-white when in fact they were color. A favorite SGB game of mine, is Mole Mania. It has not just custom borders, but also color graphics when played in a SGB. When I play Mole Mania, I make sure to play it on a SGB. BTW, play Mole Mania! It is a great game!

I used to play mine all the time when I first got it, which was before I got a GBA/SP. Now, I don't play it as much, but I got it free with my Cube... so I'm happy.

my favorite SGB game was space invaders, as it had an SNES game embedded in the cart that could only be played through the SGB. It was just a nearly perfect port of Space Invaders, but i though that was a really nice touch.

I bought my GB Player back when it first came out for $49.99 or something like that. I really do love playing the GBA games up on the TV. I still plan on buying one of those import SNES style controllers for the GCN off of ebay or something.

The Game Boy Player is great! Keep an eye on ebay for a deal because they are pricey in retail stores. I had to be patient but finally found mine for $19.99 Buy It Now with $5 shipping. Came in great shape with the disc, manual and case.
Half price of retail, even with the shipping so I was happy. :)

There are a few of these for $20 at the local gamestop. If you want one PM me and I'll go pick one up and mail it to you - just pay me through paypal (no credit cards) - I assume shipping will only be like $5. I bought one awhile back, it's pretty neat, but personally I like playing the gb/gba games on my xbox better.

You know, I have been eyeing the Gameboy Player for my Gamecube for quite some time now, but the price tag has always turned me off. I love(d) using the Super Gameboy on my SNES, and I am rather sure I would love using the GBPlayer. Next time I see one that is relatively inexpensive (probably under $30), I will certainly pick it up.
For the record, the Super Gameboy can play ANY monochrome (grey cart) or backward compatible GBC (black cart) titles. It can not play GBC only (clear cart) titles.
The Game Boy Player can play any GB, GBC, or GBA game and use the E-Reader (it cannot play GBA Videos). GB and GBC titles will play like on a GBA (ignoring SGB features).

Does the Gameboy Player for the GC offer any of its own enhancements? Does the Gameboy Player support linking to other Gameboys? Also, does linking two GBAs support multiplayer GBC games? If linking is supported then to be able to play the full Gameboy line of games in all of their glory, it seems as if you would need a Super Gameboy 2 and a GBA or GBP.

Good questions. Here is my understanding: The GBP has selectable borders and a timer... I guess that's an enhancement. For multiplayer GBC/GB games on a GBA, a special cable is required. I'm not sure if there is a 1st party version.
You cannot, however, use a GBP exactly as it were a GBA. Basically, the only difference is no GBP -> GBP linking. You have only one GBP in a chain of GBA's.
There are a few GBA games with a rumble feature on the Cube controller when played through the GBP.
As far as I know, only Super Mario Advance 4, Mario & Luigi, Pokemon Pinball Ruby & Sapphire, and Hamtaro: Ham Ham Games support it.

So to experience everyting the Gameboy line has to offer, you need a SGB2, GBASP, and GBP. One more question then, do any GBA games have special enhancements when played on a DS? If so, then you would also need to own a DS. However, I don't consider DS games to be part of the Gameboy line. (can you tell I don't care for the DS?)

Thanks for the list.
I know that there are two types of link cables. The kind for pre-GBA games and one for GBA games. The former (which has two types of connectors) can be used between any two game boys, as long as you are playing a pre-GBA game. The latter obviously only works on GBA games, and supports four players; I think it has a different shape that prevents it from being used on a pre-GBA.
Also, I know the Game Boy Player (I confuse "GBP" with Game Boy Pocket) can link with a GBA and SP. Im not sure about other game boys, but I figure it would follow the same rules. I would think that it could link with another Player, but apparently that is not the case. I dont know why, that would be cool. I am wondering now if the various GBA wireless adapters could be used on/between Game Boy Players.
This is confusing.

I got it when it came out also, but I've only played a few times. I kinda prefere playing GB game on a GBA(of couse I really haven't givin' my GBPlayer a chance.) I actually because car sick one time playing Wacky Races(I don't know why) But anyway, it's still hooked up under my GC so I may pop a disk and GB game in it and play it today.

One more question then, do any GBA games have special enhancements when played on a DS?
So far, the only GBA game to do this is WarioWare Twisted. I have been told, though I have not yet been able to test this for myself, is that if you have WarioWare Touched in the DS port and WarioWare Twisted in the GBA port of your DS at the same time, it unlocks something in one of the games or something. Like I said, I've only heard things, I haven't been able to try it out myself cuz I don't have Twisted yet.
Also, the GameBoy Player is totally worth it. If you can find it for really cheap you're lucky, but I still think it's worth the $49.99 retail price. It's very useful for those who sit and play a GameBoy game for long periods of time, such as PokeMon or another RPG. You can give your GameBoy's batteries a rest by playing it on the Cube, and you get a bigger picture as well. That's what I do, but I still use my GBASP when I'm on the road or at someone else's house (although my boyfriend also has a Player) or if I wanna multitask and watch TV and play a GameBoy game at the same time. Just the fact that you can play your GameBoy games on a bigger screen is worth it. I does have a few drawbacks, like you can't do multiplayer with the GC controllers, you have to hook another GBA up to the Player with a GBA multiplayer link, which is silly. And I think those rumble-pak GBC games like Pokemon Pinball don't work in them, and Kirby's Tilt and Tumble definitely doesn't work in it, cuz you're not gonna pick up your GameCube and move it around are you (although my boyfriend wants to try this out with WarioWare Twisted. He is verrrry strange).
So, yeah, a must own. Definitely better if you find it for $20 or less used or on ebay, but worth it if you got the $50 to spare.

Like I said, I've only heard things, I haven't been able to try it out myself cuz I don't have Twisted yet.
I heard it was the other way around: Put Twisted in the "expansion" slot of the DS with Touched in slot 1. Touched detects Twisted, and unlocks a toy. The same thing happens with Feel the Magic and any Sega GBA game.
So, there aren't any enhancements (yet) for GBA games in a DS.
