The best (or perhaps worst) example would have to be Die Hard Trilogy for PSX.

In that game, your enemies are highlighted red with civilians/friends in blue. Some of the "hostages" would hold up their hands and be highlighted blue, then whip out a gun, change to red, then fire on you! Anybody remember that?

Also, I think it was in some of the Konami games, and a few Nintendo classics, the bosses would appear dead, only to rise from the ashes to clobber you.

Another VERY cheap trick is when you just get hit, start flashing semi-transparent, but CAN STILL GET HURT, EVEN THOUGH YOU'RE FLASHING!

There ought to be some kind of law against that.

One of the Castlevanias on the N64. There was this dude pruning the hedges in the hedge maze, once you got close he turned around and whipped out a chainsaw. Freaky.

Oh, and one time I saw "Fighting Golf" for the NES at a pawn shop. I thought the concept was cool. But when I got back home and turned it on it was just a normal boring golf game.....

Chrono Trigger, programmer's ending.

RESET!
Screen goes black.

Fades back in.

That was heart-stopping to a 6th grader like myself.

Lots of fake, haunted-house-style scares in Doom III.

And I've played way too many songs in Bemani games where it's really really easy for like a minute and a half, then the last 30 seconds is pure Hell and I fail the song.

Hitman 2

Spoiler!

In the Saintpetersburg Revisited level you have to snipe a man threw a window. So You have your sniper rifle and and fire. It sounds normal but the guy doesn't go down. ou fire again. Nothing. You go ponit blonk to the back of a civilians head. They just run away in fear. the freaking game gave you blanks! Then the next part is even more suprising. But I'll leave that one be.

End Spoler!

Eternal Darkness. This game messes with you a lot. But one instance I was watching a cut sceen. When it gave me the Dirty Damaged disc error. I'm thinking shure what ever this santiy effect is pretty lame. So I sit the and sit there. It doesn't go away. I pick up my controller press all the buttons. Once again nothing. The error was legit, and I never had that error before or after. Go figgure.

The exact same goes for me, though replace "6th" with "8th" and "Trigger" with "Cross". I don't recall stumbling across a fake-out game reset in CT, but I did find the one in CC, and I was stunned... then subsequently relieved, and then a blend of irritation and hilarity followed soon after. LOL

I thought I was done with Vendetta after I kicked Faust's ass, but then the game proclaimed "You're not leaving this town alive!", and I found myself re-fighting the game's bosses, two at a time! Not nice. Not nice at all. @_@

I was so freaking glad to have kicked Gill's ass the first time in Street Fighter III... and it's about that point that I learned of the Resurrection Super Art. CHEAPEST MOVE EVER.

Breakdown faked and freaked me out in more than one case, buuuuuuut... I'll just recommend that you play the game instead of me blab about it. :D

All I have to say is LITTLE NINJA BROTHERS (NES)

Man oh man....

My friend and I played that game for hours straight then as you are right towards the end you get to this sky palace type thing where this is woman and the game goes like hay wire (as if the game messed up...blocks and colors every where) then the game suddenly snaps back to normal and the woman goes "HAHA tricked you!"...mean while my friend and I are about to LITERALLY kill each other over who tapped, kicked, or WHATEVERED the NES.....Then our anger switches from each other to rage for that woman and the game...Needless to say we finished to game anyway

Sonic Adventure on the Dreamcast...

The first time that I beat the final boss as Sonic the Hedgehog, I threw down the controller to celebrate with a little victory dance, only to soon find out that the bridge that you are standing on would be blown away by the crashing boss (please excuse my vagueness... I do not remember what the boss was like/the boss' name).

Almost forgot about Metriod Prime.

You go all the way through a fairly difficult level to get to this big ol' black widow spider thingy. It takes a while and some skill to whup the beast. But when you do, is that all?

NO! Of course not! That was just a shell and you then have to beat the jellyfish-looking metroid the spider shell was housing!!!!!!!!!!!!

Christ, what a tough boss.

Conker. When the game freezes after your fight with the alien. It was actually a really cool scene.

Oh also Super Mario Bros. 3 when the Princess screws with you and says that the Princess is in another castle. My poor little 9 year old heart stopped. I thought I was going to die. Good thing she was just joking.

Rescue on Fractalus.

Ah, there is another stranded space guy. Lets just land and pick him up. Loo de doo sure wish he would hurry up and run faster, those ships might be around any minute. JESUS HE JUST BROKE THROUGH THE COCKPIT GLASS AND ATE MY BRAINS OUT!!!!!

Obviously this freaked me out a bit as a kid.

The time I was faked-out the most in video games? The Sega Dreamcast! It is such a good system, and Sega made so many right moves, I was just sure the Dreamcast would make it! @_@

Any of the enfuriatingly CHEAP bosses in Rare's N64 games. 3 and 4 incarnations......aren't you EVER going to die? Usually when you beat a Rare end boss it's by a lucky hair with just a sliver of your life bar left, beeping away.

For a split second me and a friend were playing the end of (I think it was) Super Mario Bros. 3 and saw the text The Princess is in another castle... I was like "WHAT?!?!?!?!"... Kidding, ahh. Sure, I knew that.

Having to play through Ghouls N Ghosts twice to get to the real boss (which was admittedly pretty damn cool for the time).

Eternal Darkness had a whole bunch of nice psyche-out moments as well.

The old game Hacker had some nice bits... I wasn't cognizent enough to realize that there would be no way anyone could actually track you playing that game :D

When you complete the C64 game Ball Blasta it looks like it has crashed. You get a blue screen with a ready prompt for a coupple of seconds before before the screen flashes and prints "Something wonderful has happened, your C64 is alive" (a variation of a classic virus message) and then gives you the ending text.
